Bunbury Harbour Past and Present
Explore the significance of Ocean to Preston River Regional Park, the first
proposed regional park outside the Metropolitan area, and learn of the origin
of the Swan Coastal Plain. This area is transformed to a landscape of wildflowers
September through to November.
Find out about the natural wonders of Bunbury, such as the unique outcrop of
jagged black basalt formed by volcanic lava flow, recently dated at 135 million
years. You will discover why Bunbury is located where it is and the highs and
lows of its development over the years.
At the lookout we survey the magnificent setting of the city: the Indian Ocean
in the west, Koombana Bay and the Leschenault Inlet with the mangrove
colony in the east and how Bunbury is reinventing itself from the oceanfront to
the old harbour, the wheat silos, Marlston Hill and the city water front. You
may climb the tower for a bit of exercise and a better view. Closer to the active
port we walk over shipwrecks including American Whalers, and through the
middle of the Mangrove colony. Leschenault Homestead, one of the oldest and
most significant buildings in Bunbury is threatened by the ports expansion
plans.
Heading back along Stirling and Victoria Streets you discover more highlights
of Bunburys built heritage, as well as the spot where the Bunbury Townsite
Peg No.1 was placed and why.

A HISTORY OF CORKAGH by TURTLE BUNBURY
A History of Corkagh, Dublin: Gunpowder, Huguenots and Ha'pennies
The Corkagh demesne outside Dublin City, Ireland, has been in existence, in one guise or another, since at least 1326 when it was listed as part of the Archbishop of Dublin’s manor of Clondalkin.
In 1703 Lewis Chaigneau, a French Huguenot émigré, bought 104 acres of the forfeited Nottingham estate at Corkagh, thus setting in motion a deep and long-lasting link between Corkagh and Ireland’s Huguenot community. Lewis Chaigneau is credited with building Corkagh House, incorporating the earlier farmhouse and almost certainly using the stones from the medieval castle. During Chaigneau’s day, the gunpowder mills were also established at Corkagh by Nicholas Grueber, another French Huguenot, whose family were arguably the most influential gunpowder manufacturers in Britain or Ireland at this time.
This talk was given as part of Clondalkin's Heritage Day in November 2015 and looks at the various families who lived at Corkagh between the seventeenth century and the death of the Finlay brothers in the Great War. Turtle Bunbury, the author, descends from the Finlays.

THE YEW TREE INN BUNBURY
The Yew Tree Inn is a rather handsome village pub, built by The Earl of Crewe in the 19th century.
Inside you'll see that it has open fires, old beams and a great big bar plus the odd twist or two that befits the quirkiness of this beautiful corner of Cheshire. There is a wonderful summer terrace for al fresco dining and events.
They offer freshly made, locally sourced food from a seasonal menu with daily specials combined with informal service in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. At the bar you can find an eclectic range of spirits including an ever growing single malt collection, plus an extensive wine list and a cracking range of real ales.
FOOD
The team of chefs change the menu every eight weeks to reflect seasonal changes and you also can find a daily changing specials board in the pub.
They use as many fantastic local producers as possible with most of their beef, lamb, pork and seasonal vegetables coming from Bunbury Heath itself and the Broster family in fact, most recently they had freshly picked beetroot, carrots, lettuce, mint, spinach, new potatoes, free range eggs, whole Charollais lambs, great Hereford beef and Oxford Sandy & Black pork.
BAR
The bar is the heartbeat of The Yew Tree Inn, a place to chat with friends and unwind away from the outside world and you can be comfortable in the knowledge that all of their products have been painstakingly researched.
