Bunbury Staircase Locks in Cheshire
Situated on the Shropshire Union Canal, a mile to the north of the village of Bunbury are two wide beamed staircase locks. Brightly coloured narrow boats can often be seen navigating through this difficult double feature but it boasts a picturesque and timeless location in the historic rolling hills of the Cheshire countryside.

Bunbury Staircase Locks
26/05/2012
Two Hire boats breasting down the staircase lock at Bunbury on the Shropshire Union and heading toward Chester.
Doing the Bunbury Shuffle at the Staircase Locks
One way of saving water is by sharing locks. When it comes to a staircase lock, you can even share the lock when the boats are travelling in the opposite direction. This is called the Bunbury Shuffle and we actually performing it perfectly at Bunbury Staircase Lock on the Shropshire Union Canal
Look out for when hubby gets soaked opening the paddles!
Welcome to Bunbury Village
Bunbury is a delightful village with many old cottages and narrow winding lanes, and several other characteristic features including Bunbury Watermill, which can still be visited today. Home to the impressvie Church of Saint Bonifiace and a monument of Sir George Beeston, Bunbury makes an ideal stopping off place for country walks with several characteristic pubs and local amenities.
This year Bunbury has also been the location for Home Fires, a new six-part ITV drama set to be screened this May 2015.

A trip up Gringley Brook Staircase Lock
Narrowboat navigating up the staircase locks at Gringley Brook on the Llangollen canal shot from on the front deck.
064 Our First Staircase Locks and Exploring the Foxton Incline Plane.
Today we leave Market Harbour and retrace out steps down the arm. Jo and George take a short cut to avoid some of the twists and turns of the canal.
Foxton Locks are buzzing, It's a busy spring, Sunday lunchtime, and the Foxton Lock Inn's garden is full of people enjoying the sunshine. The canal side too is rammed with people watching the Narrowboats come and go. Luckily there are not too many boats waiting to go up the locks and we are advised by the lock keepers that we will just need to wait 45 minutes for our turn.
The lock keeper is incredibly helpful and friendly, and seems to be as busing marshalling all the gongoozerlers as much as he is helping us.
Once we are up the 10 locks we moor up and go and have an explore. We visit the little museum and go and see the famous incline plane.

1966 Boat Holiday Bunbury Llangollen Canal
This is a cine of Lawrence and Tony's boat holiday from Bunbury to Liangollen in 1966 with Peppi the dog. It includes footage of the Chirk Tunnel and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. From memory the cost was £26 for a weeks holiday.
The digital video was recorded in April 2000 by using a digital video camera to film the projected cine film direct from the screen in the company of my group of friends over a boozy evening. Hence the interesting commentary.

Shropshire Union Canal Bunbury to Tilstone
A timelapse of our passage on the Shropshire Union Canal sharing the broad Bunbury Staircase and Tilstone lock with NB MayBee Tomorrow.
Sadly no-one coming the other way, so no Bunbury Shuffle today. Of course, we then met a boat at the next bridge-hole. Always the way.
We part company below Tilstone Lock, MayBee Tomorrow head back to their home marina of Tattenall, while we go for a very good Sunday Lunch at the Dysart Arms in Bunbury itself.

Two out of shape non-boating seniors, with only a few hours of experience under their belt, navigate their way up the staircase locks in a boat that wasn't responsive to the commands from the helm. This video makes it look easy and fun... however it was anything but...
