Foodie Adventure in Savannakhet, Laos | Thai Food Emporium
The 2nd Friendship Bridge between Thailand and Laos is busy in both directions across the Mekong. Savannakhet is important regional capital, and home of the current President. It's also home to a large casino, which attracts many from Thai side of the border.
But… there's much more to the place than just a casino.
Savannakhet has a sleepy charm that is hard to place, with remnants of French colonial style still evident in its architecture and certain street names. One popular legacy is pate served on French bread (khao jee) covered with a spicy-sweet sauce and local toppings, affectionately known as the Lao hamburger.
Away from the river, as we leave the edge of our guesthouse map, the roads become something like a lunar landscape with goats roaming freely and children swimming in the lake. And ten we reach our restaurant.

River communities battle ongoing flooding
Many villages along the nation’s major rivers will continue to experience flooding after weather and water level warnings were issued for at-risk areas.
The main rivers will continue to rise to risky and dangerous levels following more rain across the country in recent days, according to an alert issued by the Meteorology and Hydrology Department.
The level of the Mekong in Vientiane has risen above the risk level for the second time in a month.
Some villages are now experiencing flooding because they are located in low-lying areas with authorities calculating the cost of the damage.
As measured at Km 4 in central Vientiane yesterday, the Mekong had risen to 11.67 metres, with the risk level being 11.50 metres and the danger level 12.50 metres.
The river is forecast to drop to 11.58 metres today and to 11.45 metres tomorrow. But although the water level is expected to fall, locals should remain on high alert.
The Mekong rose to 11.20 metres last month, flooding many low-lying areas of the capital and affecting agriculture, houses, roads and other infrastructure.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department has also warned people living along the Xebangfay, Nam Ngum and Nam Xong rivers to be alert to the possibility of flash floods and landslides and to protect their property.
The capital and the provinces of Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champassak and Vientiane have been warned to be alert for rising water levels after rivers rose to danger levels.
Yesterday, the Xebangfay River was measured at 19.48 metres, well above the danger level of 18.50 metres in the Khuaxe area of Khammuan province, which is a known bellwether marker in the river’s catchment.
Over the past eight months, Laos has suffered exceptionally heavy rainfall with tropical storms Son-tinh and Bebinca the most recent to lash many areas of the country.
Heavy downpours caused floodwater to inundate dwellings, farmland and other property, while key roads and bridges were damaged in many provinces including Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champassak and Attapeu.
Provincial authorities and district officials have discussed joint partnerships to protect villages at risk of flash flooding, particularly those located near riverbanks.
