Mondulkiri ecotourism Bunong Elephant Tour and Nature Lodge, Sen Monorom, Cambodia
Soundtrack by Preab Sovath
Based at the nature lodge animal sanctuary which trains local people in ecotourism skills such as hotel work, cooking, English, organic farms and livestock ranching, we joined our tour guide Prek to explore the Pnong hill tribe homeland where we could walk and bathe with elephants in the valleys below the Ho Chi Minh trail.
DAK DAM Community Based Ecotourism
A part of my trip to Mondulkiri Province with Cam Adventure. We just left Andong Sne Mountain heading to Dak Dam Community Based Ecotourism and Chrey Thom waterfall situated at Pu Less Village, Dak Dam Commune, Ou Reang District, Mondulkiri Province. This place is a bit nicer than last as the path is a bit cleaned and having ticket check booth which we need to pay 1000riel (USD 0.25) to visit Chrey Thom waterfall and Dak Dam Community. I flew my drone capturing the surrounding and top view of Dak Dam Commune & Chrey Thom waterfall. This place is close to the Cambodia-Vietnam border in Mondulkiri Province.
In this video, i used GoPro Hero 5 Black, iPhone 6s, DJI Phantom 3 Standard.

Asian Travel - Tribal Dancing In Mondulkiri - Youtube 01
Mondulkiri (literally: Mountain of the Mandala.) is a province (khaet) ofCambodia. Bordering the provinces of Kratié to the west, Stung Treng to the northwest, Ratanakiri to the north and the country of Vietnam to the east and south, it is the most sparsely populated province in the country despite being the largest in land area. The province was created in 1961 from the eastern part of Kratié Province. The capital is the town of Senmonorom.
History
In 1960 Mondulkiri was created out of Kratié Province by order of King Norodom Sihanouk. Sen Monorom was set up as the capital in 1962. During the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, Mondulkiri was home to three bases of theNational Liberation Front of South Vietnam which resulted in numerous incursions and bombings by US forces. About 1970 the area fell under Khmer Rouge domination. Subsequently much of the populace was forcibly removed to Koh Nhek (Kaoh Nheaek) district to provide labor for rice growing. Schools, hospitals, even entire villages were destroyed. As many as half of the people in the province died during the forced relocation in the 1970s.
The Bunong people appear to have lived in the provincial area for about 2000 years, but there is little documentation until France colonized Cambodia in 1864. Like other people in the province, the Bunong were displaced in the 1970s and only allowed to return to their traditional homeland in the 1980s.
Geography and environment
Dense forests of Mondulkiri Province.
Mondulkiri is Cambodia's largest and also most sparsely populated province, containing an area of 14,288 km2 (5,517 sq mi) ranging from 190 to 1,000 metres (620 to 3,280 ft). It is located in the south-east part of the country and borders three provinces in Vietnam: Đắk Lắk, Đắk Nông, and Bình Phước provinces. Three rivers cross the province: Srepok, Preaek Chhbaar, and Preaek Te Rivers.
The provincial capital is Sen Monorom which is located in the southeastern part of the province about 390 km (240 mi) from Phnom Penh, the national capital.

The Mondulkiri Project in Cambodia
The Mondulkiri Project is an award winning elephant sanctuary in Cambodia. They have signed an agreement with Bunong indigenous elders to rent a large area of forest close to Sen Monorom to protect it from logging. They also plan to start an elephant breeding program there soon. The Mondulkiri Project is a community project, with monies raised being used to protect the forests for their elephant sanctuary and to support the local Bunong hill tribes with employment, medicine and food donations.

Nam Lear Mountain, Mondulkiri Province
A night of camping at Nam Lear Mountain Community Based Ecotourism brought us a great memory in life. We got up early in the morning, some prepared for cooking breakfast, some went to the stream, some need WC, some brush their teeth, some make up, some get ready as we have to hike Nam Lear mountain this morning. Nam Lear is a bald mountain (there's some trees on a small part) more than 1km high located at Pichreada district, Mondulkiri Province, about 50km from Sen Monorom downtown, and close to the Cambodia-Vietnam border. There's no stairway to the top of mountain, so we have walk or crawl up to the top of mountain. It's so beautiful up there, we can see the green forest surrounding and beautiful landscape. I flew my drone capturing the bald mountain and landscape around Nam Lear Mountain.
In this video, i used GoPro Hero 5 Black, iPhone 6s, DJI Phantom 3 Standard.

Trekking in Mondulkiri, Cambodia (Sorry for Audio! We'll get better, but we put subtitles in)
We have been researching potential locations and challenges for the next Great Tuk Tuk Rally. One of BeeKeeper's events, aimed at raising money for cancer research and education in Cambodia. This is our guide Kannady from the Bunong Tribe telling us we are going to eat sticks for lunch.

Trekking in Mondulkiri (Putang village)
Trekking in Mondulkiri province from Putang village (Putang Community Center) to Ou Reang waterfall. We spend around 4 hours for walking across many places such as bat cave, fews waterfall and many wonderful landscape.
First night, we slept in village with local people (Ethnic minorities) via our tour management. It's really a great experience that I recommend.
2nd day, we start trekking to that waterfall and have lunch at there that make from tour guide. They use bamboo to cook. It's amazing, food taste is really good. After lunch we can swim, take bathing. water is clear and really cold.

community elephants in Mondulkiri Sanctuary
Following many years of daily work in the forest & carrying tourists, they did not always been eating sufficiantly. Chellot had developed a bad limp, Chepril had a chronic inflamed hip joint. Both were also severely underweight when they first joined us. Our rescue team had been negotiating with the villagers for some time and finally, they agreed to retire both elephants in return for regular community support. They were brought to the Mondulkiri Sanctuary in 2014. Following several months of rest and vigorous feeding at the Mondulkiri Sanctuary, the two have gained a total of 729 kg. Their chronic conditions have improved immensely and their Bunong families are thrilled to see them feeling well again. They also understand now, that being free is a much better life for them, they often come visit and bless the elephants.
Nature Based Tourism Project in Andongkralong
Andongkralong village is most beautiful landscape in Mondulkiri , and wildlife that you maybe not easy to see them in other places in Cambodia specially Black Shanked Douc and Yellow Check crested Gibbon but in Andongkralong we can see them during you do the tour there.

Part 1: Mondulkiri Protected Forest (English)
In 2003, WWF initiated a feasibility study for applying the highly successful Southern African approach to protected area management in the Mondulkiri Protected Forest (MPF) in Cambodia's Eastern Plains.
This documentary details what WWF and its government partners-the Forestry Administration and the General Department of Administration for Nature Conservation and Protection (the Ministry of Environment)-has achieved in MPF by laying the foundations for effective protected forest management, and shows how this approach has been used to begin supporting local livelihoods and increase community ownership of this unique and globally irreplaceable Dry Forests Landscape.
A special thanks to the Darwin Initiative and Habitat Hotels who supported the making of this documentary.
