Lake Bunyonyi; A rare delicacy that attracts tourists to Kabale
Not too many Ugandans have heard of crayfish. However, the delicacy, introduced in the 1970’s at Lake Bunyonyi, has increasingly become a popular delicacy with tourists. As SUHAIL MUGABI recently, found, it is also becoming a major tourist attraction but fishermen have struggle to catch this fish..#NTVNews

My visit to Western Uganda - September 2013
Abacus African Vacations - Uganda Highlights
An Abacus African Vacation video tour of the highlights of Uganda - The Pearl of Africa! The video starts off in Bwindi impenetrable forest, a world heritage site and home to most of the world's rare mountain gorillas. Experience gorilla trekking as you climb through the beautiful forest before finally spending an hour with a family of gorillas, described by many as 'The most incredible animal encounter on the planet'. The video then gives you a brief view of 'Mahogony Springs Lodge' one of the most exclusive lodges in Bwindi.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is the next stop, one of the most popular parks in Uganda boasting a huge diversity of wildlife, here you see elephants, antelope, warthog, hundreds of birds and of course the infamous tree climbing lions of ishasha. Take a cruise on the Kazinga channel and see hippo, crocodiles, elephants coming down to drink and buffalo lazing in the river. Engazi lodge, another 5 star resort is highlighted in the video.
Kibale forest is home to thousands of chimpanzees, monkeys and birdlife. Here the video joins a group tracking chimpanzees and spotting big males, females and even babies.
Finally the video arrives at Murchison Falls National park - the biggest of Uganda's parks. Here the highlights include the waterfall itself which is the most powerful in the world. Murchison is also the only park where you can see giraffe and the graceful animals roam around in large families known as 'towers'. Take a look at 'Bwana Tembo' lodge a new and highly rated lodge in the area before finishing off at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary where you can track white rhino on foot.
We hope this video allows you to see what Uganda and Abacus African Vacations has to offer.

Uganda - Market day at Lake Bunyonyi
On market day at Lake Bunyonyi in southwest Uganda bags with charcoal are brought in by boat for trade. Also people from villages at the lake arrive in large groups, packed in small boats. They trade their goods and take the opportunity to grab a lift with a car to Kabale, the nearest town, as market day is the day with most cars going to the city and because public transport is non-existent.
But also normal daily life goes on: early in the morning singing schoolkids arrive by boat for their lessons.
We visited Lake Bunyoni on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa.

A Profile of Kabale
The history of Kabale dates as far back as 1911, when the colonialists drew the boundaries of Uganda, Rwanda and Zaire with Kigezi falling into Uganda. Kabale was known as Kigezi district until 1980.
Before 1911, many European powers aimed at occupying the territory with Emin Pasha and Dr Sultan as the first outsiders in the cold, hilly region.
According to historians and natives of the land, the name Kabale means a small stone which originated from a piece of Iron Ore which was so heavy that people used to come from far and near to see, touch, and feel its weight.
Rubanda, Ndorwa, Rukiga and Kabale municipality form the district from which Rukungiri, Kanungu and Kisoro district were carved.
Kabale covers 1,827 square kilometers over a mountainous topography, a vegetation which is mainly green interlocked with heavily cultivated hills and dazzling valleys.
