Burg Nanstein - Wahrzeichen der Sickingenstadt Landstuhl
Früher ein wehrhafter Schutz für Land und Leute, ist die Burg heute das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Landstuhl.
Nach verschiedenen Inhabern kam Landstuhl Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts an das Geschlecht der von Sickingen als Teil der Herrschaft Landstuhl, die bis Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts existierte. Das bekannteste Mitglied dieser Familie war Franz von Sickingen. Er musste sich nach seiner Niederlage beim Pfälzischen Ritteraufstand auf die Burg Nanstein zurückziehen, wo er bei der Belagerung durch den Erzbischof von Trier, den Pfalzgrafen bei Rhein sowie den Landgrafen von Hessen beim Beschuss der Wehrbauten schwer verwundet wurde und am 7. Mai 1523 seinen Verletzungen erlag.
Auf einem Felssporn des Kahlenbergs über der Stadt Landstuhl im Kreis Kaiserslautern thront die mächtige Burgruine Nanstein. Ähnlich zahlreichen anderen Burgen im Pfälzerwald liegt die Hauptburg auf einem hohen Sandsteinfelsen, der seinerseits mit ausgehöhlten Felskammern versehen ist. In einer davon starb Franz von Sickingen während einer Belagerung durch gleich drei große Reichsfürsten. Um den Sandsteinfelsen herum gruppieren sich die Überreste der Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäude der Unterburg.
Zu ihren Glanzzeiten war die Burg gegen Angreifer gut gerüstet. Die ehemals mehrgeschossige Geschützbastion, die 1983 teilweise neu aufgemauert worden ist, stellte an der Berg- und Angriffsseite ein großes Hindernis dar. Westlich davon sorgten ein kleines Rondell aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. sowie eine nicht mehr vorhandene Bastion und die Toranlage für einen weiteren Schutz der Vorburg. An deren östlicher Schmalseite sind Reste einer gotischen Kapelle und eines Wohnbaus zu sehen. Anstelle der Vorburg befindet sich hier heute eine Gaststätte mit einer Aussichtsterrasse. Die heute sichtbare Hauptburg spiegelt überwiegend die letzte große Ausbauphase aus dem 15. und 16. Jahrhundert wider, als die Anlage unter den Nachfahren Franz von Sickingens schloßähnlich ausgebaut wurde. Auf ihrem Burghof finden alljährlich im Sommer Freilichtspiele statt.

Our first castle visit in Germany! Just a short drive from Ramstein Air Force base are the ruins of Nanstein castle. For a few euro you can explore the site. Our visit was in August, shortly after arriving in country. You can see the entire area from the top of the castle.
