Burgess Shale Interpretive Hike - Yoho National Park

The Burgess Shale is one of the worlds most significant fossil locations. Contained in Yoho National Park, these 500 million year-old fossils provide insight into life in the sea at that time and into the very nature of evolution.
Parks Canada interpreters lead day-long guided interpretive hikes to the two fossil locations in Yoho. Participants are introduced to the natural and cultural history of the area and will experience awe-inspiring views of a a variety of stunning mountain landscapes.
This video provides a snapshot of a hike to the fossil site called Walcott Quarry, showing participants starting their day, learning along the way, taking in magnificent scenery and exciting wildlife sightings and arriving at the most important fossil location in the world. Watch as visitors make their own discoveries as they pick up and examine these half a billion-year old creatures.

Associate Curator, Jean-Bernard Caron presents an overview of the fossil collection from the Burgess Shale, B.C., highlighting a number of specimens.

Mighty Burgess Shale fossil site in Kootenay National Park

On April 16th, we'll hangout with Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron and chat about his new discovery in Kootenay National Park. This new fossil assemblage is about the same age as the famous Burgess Shale deposit in Yoho National Park, and has the potential to become at least as significant. Since it was discovered by Charles Walcott in 1909, the Burgess Shale has remained the main source of information about Cambrian marine life -- animals that lived about 505 million years ago.

The new Kootenay site is comparable to the Walcott Quarry in its exceptional diversity and abundance of fossils, and especially for the quality of preservation of soft-bodied animals -- animals usually too fragile to fossilize well or at all. It contains many new fossil species not known to science. Jean-Bernard will talk about what this discovery means for science, how this changes our knowledge of the Cambrian explosion, the evolution of life on earth and what can be learned from these extraordinary animals. Burgess Trail

One of the great Hikes in the Canadian Rockies is Burgess Trail located in Yoho National Park. It is breath taking and takes you high above Emerald Lake. It is about a 9 hour hike with the first hour steady incline. And the last 3 hours pretty steady down. It also takes you just below the Burgess Shale. It is about 45 minutes from Vagabond Lodge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.

Chance, Evolution, and the Burgess Shale

As part of the John Templeton grant project From Biological Practice to Scientific Metaphysics, Alan Love gave a public lecture on “Chance, Evolution, and the Burgess Shale” at the Whyte Museum in Banff, Alberta, Canada on 22 June 2017.

30 years ago, Stephen Jay Gould reignited a longstanding debate about chance and evolution with his book Wonderful Life, which focused on the implications of exceptionally preserved fossils found in the Burgess Shale. What does the Burgess Shale say, if anything, about chance, contingency, and the nature of history? What have we learned from the ensuing debates? This talk reflects on conceptual dimensions of these questions with an eye to their broader significance in thinking about our own place in the history of life.
