Lucayan National Park Trip Ben's Cave part 1
Our 16th anniversary trip to Grand Bahama Island. Visiting Lucayan National Park was the highlight of our vacation. This part shows Ben's Cave. So beautiful and peaceful down there. The water is fed by under ground tunnels to the ocean so that's how fish find their way in.
Ep. 08 - Freeport, Bahamas - Owl's Hole
My wife and I went out to Owl's Hole with our good friends for a day of jumping in to a hole in the ground!
Owl's Hole is a limestone underground cave. Well it was until the roof collapsed creating a hole in the ground. You can actually cave dive there if you are certified.
Finding Owl's Hole can be very difficult if you're not going there with a local. Also, if you don't have an SUV or a truck you'll need to park your car a little ways from the trail to the cave.
Location: 26.587823, -78.469428
If you're in a car, park here: 26.599607, -78.475358
Sorry, you're going to have to hoof it for a while

Another PERFECT day on Grand Bahama Island! In this video we visit Grand Lucaya National park, where we hike a trail to see Ben's Cave and Burial Mounds Cave. After we head over to Gold Rock Beach... a gorgeous, deserted, untouched, natural beach which remains shallow during low tide. We had the best day here!

History Of The Bahamas
The '''history of the Bahamas,''' begins with the earliest arrival of humans in the islands in the first millennium AD. The first inhabitants of the islands now known as The Bahamas were the Lucayans, an Arawakan-speaking Taino people, who arrived between about 500 and 800 from the islands of the Caribbean. Their ancestors came from mainland South America, where Arawakan-language peoples were present in most territories, and especially along the northeastern coast.

Bahamas National Park System Expanding
Minister of the Environment Dr. Earl Deveaux announced that a new National Park has been established in Abaco and several other existing parks have been expanded.
Lucayan National Park | Grand Bahama Tours
At Lucayan National Park, you will stand shoulder to shoulder with the spirits of the Arawak Indians who occupied this area hundreds of years ago and whose first encounter with the Europeans was believed to be with Christopher Columbus in 1492.
If botany is your pleasure, feel free to walk the many trails in Lucayan National Park and see native Bahamian plants like the Allamanda or the Tararind, a brown fruit often used for cooking among the Carribean cooks. Also in this spectacular 40 acre of native foliage, along those same native trails, you may catch a glimpse of a Bahamian Hutia, a small creature, not unlike a rat, who is native only to the Bahamas.
The park is famous for its caves, above and below ground. Above ground, visitors have reported that even now, bone fragments or pieces of pottery can be found in the caves where the natives once explored. One of the caves, is home to several thousands of bats. Below the surface is over six miles of charted caverns and tunnels, making it the longest underground tunnel system so far discovered in the world.
If you prefer, just relax and enjoy the beaches adjoining Gold Rock Beach. The clear blue waters are beautiful and noting like the beaches found in the United States. The Lucayan National Park is just an hour from Freeport and is accessible via guided tours or on your own. Take a cab, rent a car or a scooter and give yourself plenty of time to explore. You will find the Bahamian people friendly and helpful.

Cold Water Corals of The Bahamas | Gregor Eberli | BNHC 2016
Cold-Water Corals - the Hidden Ecosystem in the Seaways of the Bahamas
Presented by Gregor Eberli
Gregor Eberli, Thiago B.S. Correa, Mark Grasmueck, Kimberly Galvez, John K. Reed, and Dierk Hebbeln
The deep seaways surrounding the Bahamas contain a thriving ecosystem of cold-water coral reefs. These corals live in several hundred meters of water depth in cold and dark waters. Like their shallow-water counterparts, these corals form diverse ecosystems that are highly adaptable to varying environmental conditions and develop a wide variety of mound morphologies. The largest cold-water coral province of the region exists in the Straits of Florida where cold-water corals far outnumber the shallow-water corals on the Florida shelf. Several research cruises, using multibeam bathymetry echosounders, remote operated underwater vehicles equipped with cameras, and submersible dives have documented the unexpected abundance and variability of cold-water communities in the Bahamas. They form coral mounds that can be as high as 200 meters and several hundreds of meters wide. The mound morphology is primarily controlled by ocean currents and the topography created by sedimentation processes along the slope. While currents are rather uniform in strength coral mound coverage and height varies widely. At the toe-of-slope of Great Bahama Bank large mounds (120m) follow low-relief ridges that trend perpendicular to the platform, while in the middle of the Straits mound coverage is high (70%) but mound height is small (5-10m. In all locations, however, the mounds a teeming with live, harboring a diverse fauna that include 21 species of cold-water corals, a variety of sponges, several species of stalked crinoids and sea urchins. Several of the sponges have been harvested for medical research as they contain compounds that can be synthesized to produce medication for cancer treatment. The coral mounds are also the habitat for a large number of deep-water fish. The cold-water corals also offer the unique opportunity to study the effects of climate change, ocean acidification, and global warming on the deep waters of the oceans.
