Kirkcaldy Walking Festival & Burntisland Heritage Walks - Walk Fife Podcast 28
The Kingdom of Fife has lots to offer walkers this summer.
Sean lets us know about some upcoming events that will get people out walking and exploring.
We news from around Fife, advice and answers to some questions sent in about Sean’s waking challenge.
Burntisland Heritage Walks
To celebrate Burntisland Civic Week a guided evening historic walk will take place on Wednesday 20th June at 7.00pm. The walk winds around the centre of Burntisland, visiting the Burgh Chambers, the historic Parish Church, and Rossend Castle. This walk also takes place every Wednesday at 2pm during July and August.
On Saturday 23rd June at 11am the circular Outer Heritage Walk takes place and takes the walker from the High Street, to the golf course, across The Binn, and back via Kirkton Churchyard and Rossend Castle. This walk also takes place on the last Friday of July, August and September at 1.30pm.
Kirkcaldy Walking Festival
Kirkcaldy will be hosting it’s very first walking festival this coming July. The festival will run from the 14th through to the 22nd and will offer a something for every walker. The free festival will allow walkers to explore the coastal path, observe the well known seals basking on the shore alongside Seafield as well as many other activities all guaranteed to be enjoyable, informative and environmentally friendly. A fun and family-friendly festival of walking!
Lochbagging in Fife
Sean mentioned loch bagging in the last episode of our podcast and in this show he shares that we now have a new page on the Walk Fife website dedicated to this quirky and fun pastime. John Crawford the originator of Lochbagging very kindly produced a page for our community so they can get the bug to get out there and bag some lochs.
Counterfeit Walking Poles
Sean shares a warning about fake branded walking poles that are being sold through Amazon Marketplace and shares some advice on how to avoid falling foul of the counterfeiter and why fakes can potentially dangerous to the walker.
4000 Mile Questions
Sean has gathered together some of the most often asked questions about his 400 mile walking challenge and answers them and explains certain aspects of the challenge that some listeners may not be aware of.

Burntisland Seafront 12-03-2012. (Fife)
I did this walk on my Mobility scooter on the 12th March 2012.
I started the walk at the seafront car park then through the park to its far end where there is an under pass under the railway onto the walkway around the beach. When on to it I turned to the left to the end of the walkway that way, then turned around and headed back the other way.
I followed the walkway as far as I could but there were steps which I could not access, but there is another way to where the steps go and I`ll go back a bit and go that way. I should maybe say that care should be taken as you go along the stretch of the walkway from near the Leisure Centre to the steps, though it seemed to be ok on the day I did the walk I have been there when there is a lot of broken seashells which if like myself use a scooter the broken shells could burst your scooters tyres.
I have now went back to the road at the left hand side of the Leisure Centre and am heading to the left up a road between some houses, I followed this road up to its uppermost level which overlooks the Forth and Burntisland Harbour, though if let myself your sitting on you scooter you may have to stretch a bit to see over the wall.
From there I went back down the same way until I got to a path that goes into the right. This is going off road. I went along it a little way but due to the terrain getting a bit dodgy to control the scooter and video at the same time so I turned around and headed back to the car park from where I started the walk.
I hope you enjoyed the walk and video. If you did check out my other videos of walks or even come along and do the walks yourself. There are some great walks around Fife though most of the walks I do are around my home in Lochgelly. This is due to a few factors, one is that there are a lot of great walks local to where I live (some might not be all that long but there are quite a few of them close-ish together that if you are able to you could maybe do more than one of the walks).
All of my walks are Mobility scooter accessible or I would not be able to do them. My Mobility scooter is a large 3 wheeled version.
Is there anyone out there that might be willing to sponsor me by buying me a good quality Helmut camera? At the moment I use my Sony Ericsson Neo 720p phone camera which I have to hold in one hand steer the scooter with the other which can be quite hard to do.
I have tried a Helmut camera an unbranded version of a camera called a Possidion 720p HD but I found the video warped. I looked on youtube at clips taken on some other similar priced Helmut cameras and found them warped as well so it will have to be a more expensive Helmut camera that produces true to live HD video like I get from my Sony Ericsson Neo 720p phone camera. A Helmut as well would be helpfull but not a bike version with all the holes in it, more like motor bike Helmut's.

Industrial Steam Locos at British Aluminium Burntisland in 1967
8mm archive cine film (no sound) of the 3 steam locos in action at the Burntisland,Scotland factory of British Aluminium. All 3 locos are preserved. The Barclay loco is at Bo'ness; the older Peckett is at the Caledonian Railway at Brechin; the other Peckett is at the Yeovill Steam Centre. The factory is now completely demolished. I believe it has been replaced by housing.
Police Scotland Fife Pipe Band Burntisland Scotland
Tour Scotland video of Police Scotland Fife Pipe Band at the Pipe Band Championship in Burntisland, Fife. The band was established in September 2007 as the Fife Constabulary Pipe Band, and was placed in the senior grade by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association in February the following year. Their first competition, at the Dunbar Highland Games in May 2008, saw them awarded first prize. The first Pipe Major was James Murray, with Andrew Mathieson starting as Pipe Sergeant, both having left Grade 1 band Shotts and Dykehead. When James Murray announced he was to emigrate to Australia, Mathieson took over as Pipe Major. Douglas Murray became Pipe Major in July 2013.
Barclay Loco returns to Fife
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society have come to an agreement with Fife Heritage Railway, for the loan and cosmetic restoration of steam locomotive Andrew Barclay 2046, British Aluminium Company No.3
Built in 1937 it served its whole working life at the bauxite reduction works in Burntisland, Fife. Being donated to the SRPS in 1989.
As the locomotive is too small for use on passenger service, it has been stored outside for a number of years, subject to the elements. It is the wish of FHR to bring it back home and cosmetically restore it back to former glory.
Also on this video No.20 Wemyss Private Railway Built by Andrew Barclay in 1939 (Works No.2068).
One of Britain’s largest 0-6-0 designs and used on the extensive Weymss Private Railway system in East Fife.
This Engine is in poor mechanical condition although it is hoped that the boiler should only need a re-tube. There are several cracks in the frames which will need to be repaired and the trailing axle is below scrapping size. A spare set of axles complete with new tyres is in stock for this engine. These wheel sets have had the journals skimmed and tyres profiled.
The motion and brake gear has now been removed the boiler stripped and lifted out of the frames and loaded onto a Lowmac wagon.

UK - 35018 on The Great Britain XII - 3rd May 2019
Ex. Southern Railway Merchant Navy pacific number 35018 British India Line hauled the nine day spectacular tour of Britain from Carlisle to Scarborough, via York.
We see the train twice to the south of York at Hillam and Ulleskelf. The train had stopped at Milford Loop for water and, so, allowed us to get ahead for a second view.
Incidentally, for the benefit of our overseas viewers, you'll see two power stations in the first sequence. Both of these were originally built for coal firing but all our power stations are now being converted to burn the BioMass which is being transported behind the diesel, 66129. This BioMass is processed domestic and commercial waste.
Recorded on Friday 3rd May, 2019.
