The Strange Case of Burrow Mump
Burrow Mump
DesBurrow Mump is a hill and historic site overlooking Southlake Moor in the village of Burrowbridge within the English county of Somerset. It is a scheduled monument, with the ruined church on top of the hill a Grade II listed building.
The hill stands at a strategic location overlooking the point where the River Tone and the old course of the River Cary join the River Parrett. Although there is some evidence of Roman visitation, the first fortification of the site was the construction of a Norman motte. It has been called King Alfred's Fort, however there is no proof of use by Alfred the Great. A medieval church was built on the hill in the 15th century. The current ruined church on top of the hill was built in 1793. The land and ruin were donated to the National Trust in 1946 as a war memorial.

The Burrow Mump Visit, April 2011.wmv
The Burrow Mump also played its part during the 'Battle of Sedgemoor'1685 and during the English Civil War about 40 years earlier. The Mump commands excellent panoramic views all around and is also a good defensive position so it is no wonder it was used for military purposes. The derelict church is called 'St Michaels' but lack of funding prevented it restoration--a smaller church now sits at the bottom of the mump.Within one of the photos towards the end, a large RAF plane ' Hercules', can be seen flying very low over the rooftops of Burrowbridge. The next video will be the continuation of my cycle close to the River Parrett and Bridgwater Canal as I end my day ready to catch the train back to WSM--not without its probelms.
