Join David’s Been Here as they explore all the must-visit sites and top things to do in Turkey. In this video, David brings us to Turkey’s second largest city of Bursa. Located in the northwest corner of the country (just south of Istanbul), Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire and today thrives as one of the country’s most industrialized cities. Join David as he tours all the top things to see and do in Bursa, from the coolest historical sites to some of the best shopping. Most tours should kick off around Zafer Plaza and the Grand Bazaar, where visitors can explore one of the city’s most famous items of trade: silk. Located in the Koza Han section, you can explore two levels and over 40 shops of beautiful, authentic, 100% “ipek” (silk products)- the perfect gift or souvenir to bring back home. From here you can visit the stunning 14th century Ulu Cami, or Grand Mosque (a great example of early Ottoman architecture), the beautifully tiled Yesil Türbe (Green Tomb of Mehmed I) and Hisar- the citadel entrance and last remaining gate of the Old City Wall. A bit outside the city center, visitors can find Inkaya- a 600-year-old sycamore tree planted by the Ottomans… a great place to visit in the morning for some coffee/tea & breakfast! Most sites are within walking distance from the historic city center, so don’t miss a beat when you’re visiting this beautiful Turkish city!

BURSA - Thermal Tourism
SPAS
From Rome to the Byzantines A letter written by Plinius, the first Roman governor of Bursa appointed by the Emperor Trajan early in the second century AD, tells us that there were no baths in Bursa prior to that time. During the reign of the Eastern Roman emperor Justinian I (527-565)when a major building programme was carried out in Bursa, baths were built at Pythia (today Çekirge) so that the public could take advantage of the hot springs there. More baths were added over the centuries and Bursa became one of the most important spas of the Byzantine period.
Spas under the Ottomans
The seventeenth century Turkish writer and traveller Evliya Çelebi declared, justly, that Bursa consisted of water. The two-domed baths at the spa built by Justinian were enlarged by Sultan Murad Hüdavendigar (1360-1389) who had another two domed section added. Over the centuries people came from far and wide to bathe in the hot mineral water here. They included members of the imperial family and household, notables and diplomats from Istanbul, foreign princes travelling in the region, and foreign scholars, writers and statesmen. Over the four years that Mehmet Tevfik Bey was governor of Bursa, for instance, he was host to the Duke of Holstein, brother-in-law of Wilhelm II of Germany, and his wife on 6 May 1906, to Prince Victor Napoleon of the Bonaparte family on 7 June 1908, and to Duke Carl Edward Saxe-Coburg and his wife on 4 July 1908.
Bursa hamams consist of an entrance hall, a tepidarium, and the washing hall itself known as the halvet. The Ottoman poet Arif wrote of these baths,
Those who enter remain
Bathing in the life giving water
Cures the ills of many
At Bursa's spa.
In a letter to his father written during his sojourn in Turkey in the 1830s, Helmut von Moltke wrote: I have already told you of the pleasures of the Turkish hamams. In Bursa the water is not artificially heated, but is by nature so hot that at first one cannot believe that one will live to survive immeı~sion in the large, clear pool without being scalded. There was a wonderful view from the terrace of the hamam which we entered and it was so comfortable that we were reluctant to leave.

Korea-Turkey 60th Anniversary Turkish Culture Day Event
Checking the status as a global festival and strengthening the international network
[IIJ= Gyeongsangbuk-do Reporter, Euibong Yeo, Boseul Lee] The Andong International Maskdance Festival has been actively promoting programs for foreigners and participating in exchanges with foreign countries, making it a truly global festival.
As this year marks the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Korea and Turkey, the performance of the troupes from Turkey was more meaningful.
Korea and Turkey have promoted their friendly relations by similar race and blood, Turkish participation in the Korean War, friendship in the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, and hosting the Gyeongju-Istanbul Expo in 2015.
The Andong Festivals Tourism Foundation, during the Maskdance Festival of last year, had been engaged in cultural exchange agreements between the two organizations (Andong Festival Tourism Foundation and Bursa Culture & Arts Tourism Foundation).
The Turkish Culture Day event, which was held on the 30th, the next day of the festival, has been held as an extension of festival exchange between the Turkish Bursa Dance Competition and the Andong International Maskdance Festival in Korea.
And in July this year, the delegation of Andong City was invited to the International Dance Competition held in Bursa, Turkey.
During the festival, the Kilic-Kalkan Folklore Bursa team performed Sword and Shield Dancing in Bursa State, Turkey.
Various exchange events between Korea and Turkey are under way, and Andong has prepared this year's program in line with such a national policy.
This event was composed of congratulatory comments from the representatives of both cities, foster singing ceremony between representative festivals, and exchange of representative performance between both countries.
In addition, in the festival site was installed and operated the Turkish Culture Exhibition Hall where we can look into the culture and tourism of Turkey.
Although the language and culture are different, this event, which is a tool of human communication such as mask and mask dance, is expected to contribute to active exchanges in various fields such as culture, society and economy between the two cities and further between the two countries.
The Andong Festival Tourism Foundation said, We are not making the international relation just a one-time exchange, but making it a good opportunity of creating a local culture that coexists through continuous mutual cultural exchanges.

Great Mosque of Bursa
The Ulu Cami was built by Bayezid I after the Nicopolis (Nigbolu) victory. After being burnt down by Timur in 1402, the building was damaged by fires in 1493 and 1889 and by earthquake in 1855 and restored extensively after the earthquake (architect, Parvillée) and in 1959.
The mosque is composed of a large central hall measuring sixty-three meters by fifty meters, covered with twenty domes supported on round arches that fall on thirty piers arranged in a regular grid. The structure is clearly expressed on the exterior where the eighteen piers that make up the wall and their connecting arches are left in relief, with large windows between. The building is entered through portals on the north, east and west. Inside, at the intersection of axes from all entrances, a 19th century marble ablution fountain is illuminated from oculus of dome above, the highest dome in the mosque. Eighteen of the domes were rebuilt in 1855 after collapsing in the earthquake. The interior is adorned with colossal inscriptions on piers presenting the ninety-names of Allah in diwani and küfi script with accompanying baroque decoration from the 19th century. The minber, composed of interlocking wooden pieces fitted together without glue or nails, is decorated on both sides with carved geometric designs creating an impression of the skies. The honey-colored limestone of the exterior, plastered white until recently was uncovered in the restoration of 1959. The two minarets, on the northeast and northwest corner of mosque, are made of brick bases faced with marble; their wooden and lead caps were replaced with baroque stone alternatives by Parvillée.
