GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
How to Grow Watermelon
Watch more Seeds & Planting videos:
If you love to bury your face in a cold slice of watermelon on a hot summer day, learn to grow them in your own backyard.
Step 1: Start indoors
Start your seedlings indoors, especially if you live in a cooler climate. Plant two to three seeds per pot and choose the healthiest seedling for transplantation.
Tip
For best results use peat pots that can be transplanted whole without uprooting and potentially traumatizing your seedling.
Step 2: Give space
Give your watermelons space to grow. Seed hills in a row, and space the rows 7 to 10 feet apart. If you don’t have that much room, consider a smaller bush variety.
Step 3: Plant
Plant your seeds or seedlings outdoors after the last frost. Plant one to two seedlings per hill, or thin your plants to this number once they have taken root.
Step 4: Feed well
Feed your watermelon plants with fertilizers rich in nitrogen early in their growth, followed by fertilizer rich in phosphorous and potassium after flowers have formed.
Step 5: Water if necessary
Water your watermelons only when necessary, such as during a prolonged dry spell.
Step 6: Protect
Protect your plants and their roots by aggressively weeding with a shallow hoe. Stave off cucumber beetles and other pests with appropriate pesticides.
Tip
Use black plastic as mulch in your watermelon rows to reduce weeds and keep your plants warm and moist.
Step 7: Harvest
Harvest your melons after 75 to 100 days. Signs of ripeness include yellowing on the underside, a dulling of the overall color, resistance to thumbnails on the rind, and browning of the stems near the fruit.
Did You Know?
Some varieties of watermelon can grow to over 200 pounds.
How to Grow Sweet Potatoes
Watch more Vegetable Gardening videos:
You don’t have to wait for the holidays to get your sweet potato fix. Grow them yourself and harvest enough to keep yourself satisfied year-round.
Step 1: Start early
Start your crop early, since sweet potatoes require 100 to 150 days to mature. Begin your slips indoors, about 12 weeks before transplantation.
Tip
For best results, start your slips from a tuber that is already disease resistant so that this resistance is passed on to your crop.
Step 2: Grow slips
Grow slips by submerging the bottom third of a tuber in water until it sprouts. Then transfer individual sprouts of 6 inches or longer to their own growing medium to root.
Step 3: Plant slips
Plant your slips outside when all danger of frost has passed. Transplant into mounds 8 inches high and 12 inches wide, with plants spaced 12 inches apart and rows spaced 3 to 4 feet apart.
Tip
If you don’t have the space that sweet potato vines require, consider a bush variety instead.
Step 4: Water them
Water your sweet potatoes with an average of 1 inch per week, but make sure that the soil is well-drained. Excess moisture will rot the tubers. Stop watering 3 to 4 weeks before harvest.
Step 5: Care for them
Apply low nitrogen fertilizer and pesticide to limit insect damage.
Step 6: Harvest
Harvest your potatoes before frost can damage them. Use a gardening fork and start about 12 inches from the vine’s center, working your way inward.
Step 7: Cure them
Leave your crop in the sun to dry for a few hours after harvest, and then move them to a dark, humid space for another 2 weeks to harden. After that, indulge your sweet tooth.
Did You Know?
Although sweet potatoes are commonly called yams in the U.S., yams are actually a different family of plant that grows mainly in Africa.
Neil Gaiman: The Ocean at the End of the Lane | Talks at Google
Neil Gaiman stops by the Googleplex to discuss his latest book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane. You can find the book on Google Play at: goo.gl/KFqZK . This talk was moderated by Chris DiBona.
From the book description:
A major new work from a writer to make readers rejoice (Minneapolis Star Tribune)—a moving story of memory, magic, and survival
Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.
Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie—magical, comforting, wise beyond her years—promised to protect him, no matter what.
A groundbreaking work from a master, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out. It is a stirring, terrifying, and elegiac fable as delicate as a butterfly's wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark.

LYRICS
I’m so tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
So tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
Party, trying my best to meet somebody
But everybody around me is falling in love to our song
Hate it, taking a shot cause I can’t take it
But I don’t think they make anything that strong so I hold on
I’m so tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
So tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
Strangers, killing my lonely nights with strangers
And when they leave I go back to our song, I hold on
Hurts like heaven, lost in the sound
Buzzcut season like you’re still around
Can’t unmiss you and I need you now
Yeah
I’m so tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
So tired of love songs
Tired of love songs
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home
Wanna go home, woah
I’m so tired of love songs
Tired of love songs (someone take me home)
Tired of love songs, tired of love
Just wanna go home
Wanna go home (cause I can’t be alone)
Wanna go home, woah
Reptiles Left to Die at PetSmart Supplier Mill
Subscribe to #PETA: ????Turn on ALL push notifications ????
Eyewitnesses found that reptiles were denied basic care, left to suffer with gruesome injuries, and cruelly killed at a PetSmart supplier.
Animals crammed into filthy, crowded plastic bins stacked into shelving units like old bank statements. Living beings deprived of water for days or even weeks. Sick and injured animals denied veterinary care. Emaciated, severely dehydrated animals desperate for water. Animals cruelly killed by being gassed or frozen to death. We've seen it time and time again at dealers that sell animals to pet stores, and now we've seen it again at Reptiles by Mack, a reptile mill in Xenia, Ohio, that breeds and sells frogs, lizards, turtles, and other animals to pet stores across the country, such as PetSmart.
This case is not unusual. Reptiles by Mack is the sixth animal dealer with ties to large pet store chains that PETA has exposed. PetSmart is well aware that investigation after investigation into its animal suppliers has found factory-farm conditions, filth, crowding, deprivation, neglect, cruelty, and prolonged, painful death. Yet it continues to sell animals and do business with these mills.
Please, pledge never to buy pet supplies from retailers that sell any animals. Let PetSmart officials know that you'll instead buy supplies from businesses that don't sell animals, such as Target, Walgreens, or online retailers:
PETA's mission statement is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way:

Our Miss Brooks: Magazine Articles / Cow in the Closet / Takes Over Spring Garden / Orphan Twins
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name.
Connie (Constance) Brooks (Eve Arden), an English teacher at fictional Madison High School.
Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), blustery, gruff, crooked and unsympathetic Madison High principal, a near-constant pain to his faculty and students. (Conklin was played by Joseph Forte in the show's first episode; Gordon succeeded him for the rest of the series' run.) Occasionally Conklin would rig competitions at the school--such as that for prom queen--so that his daughter Harriet would win.
Walter Denton (Richard Crenna, billed at the time as Dick Crenna), a Madison High student, well-intentioned and clumsy, with a nasally high, cracking voice, often driving Miss Brooks (his self-professed favorite teacher) to school in a broken-down jalopy. Miss Brooks' references to her own usually-in-the-shop car became one of the show's running gags.
Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler on radio, billed sometimes under his birth name Ira Grossel); Robert Rockwell on both radio and television), Madison High biology teacher, the shy and often clueless object of Miss Brooks' affections.
Margaret Davis (Jane Morgan), Miss Brooks' absentminded landlady, whose two trademarks are a cat named Minerva, and a penchant for whipping up exotic and often inedible breakfasts.
Harriet Conklin (Gloria McMillan), Madison High student and daughter of principal Conklin. A sometime love interest for Walter Denton, Harriet was honest and guileless with none of her father's malevolence and dishonesty.
Stretch (Fabian) Snodgrass (Leonard Smith), dull-witted Madison High athletic star and Walter's best friend.
Daisy Enright (Mary Jane Croft), Madison High English teacher, and a scheming professional and romantic rival to Miss Brooks.
Jacques Monet (Gerald Mohr), a French teacher.
Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role.
Lucille Ball was believed to have been the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Chairman Bill Paley, who was friendly with Arden, persuaded her to audition for the part. With a slightly rewritten audition script--Osgood Conklin, for example, was originally written as a school board president but was now written as the incoming new Madison principal--Arden agreed to give the newly-revamped show a try.
Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very feline in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast--blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright--also received positive reviews.
Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-49, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton, she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne.
For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year after its television life ended.
