Bury Transport Museum, Thursday 12th April 2018
On the 12th of April I visited the East Lancashire Railway and Bury Transport Museum, arriving shortly after 1100 dure to train cancellations and with a 2 hour wait until the next train I elected to visit the Transport Museum first, located just across the road and with free entry the museum documents the history of the transport network around the Greater Manchester and surrounding areas from horse drawn trams to buses and trains. A well worth visit.

Bury Transport Museum is a transport museum in Bury, situated in the former Castlecroft Goods Warehouse, a Grade II listed building from 1846, on Castlecroft Road, with the main entrance from Bolton Street, BL9 0EY.The industrial heritage of the North West is brought to life before your very eyes at Bury Transport Museum. Through stunningly restored vehicles, original artifacts and interactive exhibits, your family can explore the lives and jobs of people in the early 20th Century.
There is plenty to keep both adults and children entertained, whether that’s discovering the horse drawn tram that was once a chip shop, learning about how “Hilda” the steam roller almost met her end, meeting the bus with a history in movies or taking a look around the smallest museum inside of a museum in the UK!
Bury Transport Museum was started in 1973 by volunteers of the East Lancashire Railway, had to close in 2003 because of roof problems but opened again in 2010.

For more cultural pursuits, there is The Fusilier Museum located in the Cultural Quarter. Close by is The Transport Museum, Bury Art Museum and The Met Theatre ensuring you are never short of interesting things to do, see or explore.
Annual festivals attract residents and businesses from all over the Bury area. The Chocolate Festival in March, unites Ramsbottom’s many chocolate traders with chocoholics from across the region for three days of indulgence. Ramsbottom also hosts the Ramsbottom Festival over the third weekend in September. Thousands of people from all over come to watch world-renown music acts perform, such as Soul II Soul, The Proclaimers and Idlewild.
Those with children can take their pick of primary schools, with three in the local area rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted – Lowercroft Primary, Christchurch Primary, St Josephs Primary. For older children, there are a number of respected high schools as well as the esteemed Bury Grammar School in the town centre.
