The construction of the 19-kilometre (11.8-mile) bridge, the longest in Russia, started in February 2016.
The road of the bridge across the Kerch Strait was opened by Russian President Vladimir Putin opened in May 2018, while the railway crossings are expected to be in operation in December 2019.

4К | Koktebel walking tour| Crimea
Koktebel (Ukrainian: Коктебéль, Russian: Коктебéль, Crimean Tatar: Köktöbel), formerly known as Planerskoye, is an urban-type settlement and one of the most popular resort townlets in South-Eastern Crimea. Koktebel is situated on the shore of the Black Sea about halfway between Feodosia and Sudak and is subordinated to the Feodosia Municipality. Population: 2,807 (2014 Census).
It is best known for its literary associations. The Russian poet Maximilian Voloshin made it his residence, where he entertained many distinguished guests, including Marina Tsvetayeva, Osip Mandelshtam, and Andrey Bely (who died there). They all wrote remarkable poems in Koktebel. Another prominent literary resident of Koktebel was Ilya Ehrenburg who lived there circa 1919 while escaping from anti-Semitic riots in Kiev.
The name Köktöbel is of Turkic origin: in Crimean Tatar it means “Land of the blue hills” (from kök, “sky blue”, and töbe, “hill” or “mountain”, composed with the collective suffix -el). Its Soviet name of Planerskoye comes from the Russian planer, or glider: the hills above the shoreline were the site of many early experiments in manned heavier-than-air flight by Russian pioneer aviators. The local airfield is still known as Planerskoye.
The 2003 film of the same name by Boris Khlebnikov and Aleksei Popogrebsky follows the journey of a father and son as they try to reach Koktebel from Moscow.
Koktebel was known as a vacation spot for writers in the Soviet Union. It is also famous for its brandy, its hang-gliding and its naturist beach, largest in the former USSR.
There is a mixture of public beaches and private beaches with a paved walkway all along the bay. This walkway is lined with small restaurants, cafes, kiosks, and small market areas selling arts and crafts, dried fish, or slices of home-baked cake. In the evening, the beachfront comes alive with many small discos offering music, beer and shashlik. The cuisine is predominantly Tatar but Russian and Ukrainian food is also on offer. There are boat excursions, horse-riding and trips to a nearby monastery or to the cognac factory. Accommodation is either in a small hotel or in one of the hundreds of guesthouses run by local residents. It seems as though the whole population has turned into innkeepers in the summer.
Koktebel is nowadays also well known for its jazz festival that usually takes place in the middle of September. It lures the attention of jazz-lovers from the whole ex-USSR. Cast from the festival in past years included De-Phazz, Nino Katamadze, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham and many other famous jazz and world music performers. But the festival's 2014 edition will be held in Zatoka and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi (both in Odessa Oblast).

Ukrainian soldier killed in shooting at Crimea military bas
One Ukrainian soldier was killed and another wounded after gunmen attacked a military base near the capital of Crimea on Tuesday (March 18).
According to the Washington Post, the incident began when unidentified assailants arrived outside the military base in Simferopol in a truck flying a Russian flag. Gunmen then stormed the base and opened fire. It was reported that the guns were fired into the air, and it is not clear whether the two victims were struck by stray bullets or were fired at directly.
A report by RT said the shots were fired by a sniper from an uncompleted building opposite the military base targeting the Ukrainian soldiers as well the base itself.
It was not clear who was behind the incident and there was no immediate evidence that Russian soldiers were involved.
Following the shooting Ukraine's Ministry of Defence has authorized its soldiers in Crimea to fire in self-defence.

WHY BRIDGE BETWEEN CRIMEA & RUSSIA IS VERY SIGNIFICANT ?
INTRODUCTION
Russian engineers have completed a key phase of a bridge that will link the annexed Crimea peninsula to mainland Russia.
Recently a huge 6,000-tonne railway arch was hauled into place 35 meters (115ft) above the sea, in an operation involving hundreds of workers. The railway arch forms a section more than 200 metres in length, and is high enough to allow ships to pass beneath. A similar arch for the road traffic section will be lifted into place next month.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes WHY BRIDGE BETWEEN CRIMEA & RUSSIA IS VERY SIGNIFICANT ?
BACKGROUND
Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014 in a rapid military operation.. Russia says its seizure of the territory was in response to the will of locals, who voted overwhelmingly to join Russia in a hastily organized referendum in 2014 that was dismissed as illegitimate by the international community. Since then, human rights groups have criticized a crackdown on freedom of speech in the region, and the indigenous Crimean Tatar population has reported harassment and arrests
CONSTRUCTED BY
Construction is being overseen by Arkady Rotenberg, a billionaire who was Vladimir Putin’s childhood judo partner and has a long history of winning state construction contracts during the presidency of his old friend.
Rotenberg has claimed the project is not just about money: “Besides financial profit ... I also want the project to mean something for future generations,” he told Russian state television last year.
MAJOR EFFORT
Crimea is linked to Ukraine by a narrow isthmus, but is separated from Russia by the Kerch Strait. Currently the only routes to Crimea from mainland Russia are by plane or a ferry across the strait, which is often cancelled due to bad weather.
Plans for its construction began to take shape shortly after the annexation, and were made all the more important by a series of blockades from the Ukrainian side. The border between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine is highly militarised and subject to long delays.
The Russian government's draft resolution of 1 September 2014 required the bridge to have 4 lanes of vehicle traffic and a double-track railway.
An official video from October 2015 contains a CGI concept of the bridge design, annotated with various measurements. It shows a four-lane, flat deck highway bridge running parallel with the separate two-track railway. The main span over the Kerch Strait shipping channel has a steel arch support, 227 meters wide with a 35-metre clearance above the water to allow for ships to pass under. The bridge is 19 km in total. There are 3 segments: from the Taman Peninsula to Tuzla Spit is 7 km; across Tuzla Island is 6.5 km; and from Tuzla Island to the Crimean Peninsula is 5.5 km.
The bridge has been described as the most complex construction operation in Russian history. It will be the longest bridge in the country, and is projected to cost nearly £3bn.
STATUS
The bridge is due to open to road traffic next year and rail traffic in 2019. It is a major part of the Kremlin’s plan to integrate Crimea. The international community still regards the territory as part of Ukraine, and Crimean officials and companies have been under western sanctions since the annexation.
IMPLICATIONS
Russian officials hope the bridge will make it easier for Russian tourists to holiday in Crimea, and for Crimean wines and produce to be transported to mainland Russia for sale.
For Russia, the bridge is both a practical necessity to provide infrastructure links to the annexed peninsula, and a symbolic move meant to show that Moscow has no intention of giving up control over Crimea any time soon.
