First Class Bus Trip in Peru: Arequipa to Cusco (near Machu Picchu)
Magical Peru #11: From Arequipa to Chivay by Bus
On this video we see Peruvian people selling their local products, like clothes, handicraft and coca leafs; tipical animals such as llamas, vicuñas, sheeps and birds;and breathtaking scenery, with the desert contrasting with volcanos and frozen-top mountains. We reach almost 5,000 meters above sea level and the onipresent volcano El Misti couldn´t be missed.
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, piramids and ancient cities. Now we go South: our first stop was in Arequipa but now we are heading to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour!
Chivay is a town in the Colca valley, capital of the Caylloma province in the Arequipa region, Peru. Located at about 12,000 ft above sea level, it lies upstream of the renowned Colca Canyon. It has a central town square and an active market. The thermal springs La Calera Baños Termales are located 3 km from town, where a number of heated pools have been constructed. A stone Inca bridge crosses the Colca River ravine, just to the north of the town. The town is a popular staging point for tourists visiting Condor Cross or Cruz Del Condor, where condors can be seen catching thermal uplifts a few kilometres downstream. Most of the Colca Canyon tour depart from Chivay.
Arequipa, founded on the 15th of August, 1540, is the capital and largest city of the province of Arequipa and the seat of the Constitutional Court. Also known as the White City, Arequipa has 845 touthands inhabitants. Arequipa is just below the edge of the Altiplano, at 2380 meters above sea level and surrounded by three impressive volcanoes. It's Peru's second most important city (after Lima), and the second most popular among tourists (after Cuzco). The city is part of the so called Southern Peru Tourist Corridor, together with Nazca, Puno and Cusco. In contrast to these other cities, Arequipa is an example of the Spanish and mestizo culture developed in Peru. There are no Inca artifacts or ruins in the city as the Arequipa was a suporter of Spanish colonization.
On the next video we will get to know a bit more of Chivay, and bath on its thermal pools La Calera Baños Termales (hot springs)!

Magical Peru #9: Travelling by Bus to Arequipa
We first arrived in Lima and spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in the capital (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of the country and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, piramids and ancient cities. Now we go South and our first stop is in Arequipa!
We crossed Peru travelling by bus with Cruz del Sur, probably the best bus company in Perú. They connect the major cities and small towns, and the buses are very good, with confortable seats, on board service and reliable bus drivers.
In Arequipa we stayed at the Crismar Hotel, right at the city centre. From Arequipa is easy to get to Chivay, Canion de Colca, Puno and Lake Titicaca.
Arequipa, founded on the 15th of August, 1540, is the capital and largest city of the province of Arequipa and the seat of the Constitutional Court. Also known as the White City, Arequipa has 844,407 inhabitants. There are no Inca artifacts or ruins in the city.
On the next video we will show the city of Arequipa!
