TIGRIS at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Florida Roller Coaster
Tigris is a steel roller coaster at Busch Gardens Tampa amusement park located in Tampa, Florida, United States. Built and manufactured by Premier Rides, Tigris officially opened on April 19, 2019.
The Tanganyika Tidal Wave closed in April 2016. In March 2018, SeaWorld Entertainment (owner of Busch Gardens Tampa) filed trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the names Tigris, Twisted Tiger, and Uproar. On June 26, 2018, an environmental resource permit was submitted to the Southwest Florida Water Management District revealing the location of the attraction to be within the confines of the section of Jungala and a tiger exhibit.
In July 2018, documents were reported about upcoming developments where a previous attraction, Tidal Wave, once stood in Busch Gardens Tampa under the working title Project TEEL. The project was proposed to construct a 3,230 square feet (300 m2) building within a 19,683 square feet (1,828.6 m2) area consisting of the attraction and paths and to remove 40,185 square feet (3,733.3 m2) within the existing area.
On September 12, 2018, Busch Gardens Tampa revealed Tigris, a Premier Rides Sky Rocket II, themed to the tiger to open in 2019 along with a development for a Gwazi area attraction in 2020. By January 2019, the park had the rides towers three-fifths complete. In February 2019, construction of the roller coaster was completed. Busch Gardens announced a media event to take place on March 1, 2019 to present the ride's vehicles alongside additional information on the Gwazi attraction. On March 1, the trains for the ride were revealed. The roller coaster's opening date was announced by the park on April 4, 2019, scheduled for mid-April. T&G Constructors with offices in Miami and Orlando was the General Contractor that completed the project. The roller coaster soft-opened on April 16, 2019, then officially opened on April 19, 2019.
ABOUT
Busch Gardens Tampa (formerly known as Busch Gardens Africa and Busch Gardens: The Dark Continent) is a 335-acre (136 ha) African-themed animal theme park located in the city of Tampa, Florida. Busch Gardens Tampa is owned and operated by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment and is the 2nd largest park in terms of attendance behind SeaWorld Orlando. The park officially features nine roller coasters and two water rides amongst other rides and animal attractions. On April 19th, 2019, Busch Gardens opened its newest roller coaster, a Sky Rocket II named Tigris.
Alongside sister waterpark Adventure Island (30-acre (12 ha)), Busch Gardens is the anchor of Tampa's 365-acre (148 ha) amusement multiplex. Currently, Busch Gardens competes with other such parks in Florida and charges comparable fees. Busch Gardens is currently accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). In 2015, the park hosted 4.2 million people, placing 11th as the most-visited theme parks in the United States.
Busch Gardens Tampa opened on March 31, 1959 as an admission-free hospitality facility for Tampa Anheuser-Busch; in addition to various beer tastings, they had a bird garden and the Stairway to the Stars, which was an escalator that took guests to the roof of the brewery.
Busch Gardens continued to grow and in 1965, opened the 29-acre (12 ha) Serengeti Plains, which allowed the African wildlife to roam freely. It continued to focus on its tropical landscape, exotic animals and amusements to draw visitors. Busch Gardens began charging admission as the entertainment became more complex, with extra fees for the thrill rides, such as the roller coasters for which Busch Gardens is now known.
