Malta 10 - Buskett - Siggiewi
On our last day in Malta we hiked from Buskett to Siggiewi. Malta is beautiful!
Lost in the buskett woodlands, MALTA
Buskett Garden is the only woodland area in Malta and is situated in the lush valley of Wied Il-Luq south of Rabat and east of Dingli.
Buskett Gardens was planted by the Knights of Malta to be used as a hunting ground. Today Buskett is one of the greenest areas in Malta: the gardens are also home to different type of trees such as orange, cactus, Mediterranean pines and cypress trees, bushes, shrubs and flowers. The garden also holds vineyards, olive and lemon groves. Buskett Gardens can be explored by following the several peaceful pathways around the gardens and is a very popular place for picnics and nature lovers who want to discover the flora and fauna.
WALK AROUND BUSKETT GARDENS MALTA
Hello everyone! Welcome to our channel!
We took the kids for a short walk around the small woods we have in Malta, Buskett Gardens. They really enjoyed it!
It is a very relaxing place. The kids always love it. What I love about it is that the kids don't complain about the walking, because they want to be either by the water or by the trees or the leaves. Touching, throwing, engaging with nature.

MALTA: Żejtun - A Heritage Walk
Żejtun or Città Beland is a town of 12,000 inhabitants in the south of Malta. Żejtun was bestowed with the title of Città Beland by Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bohheim, Grandmaster of Knights of Malta in 1797. Beland was his mother's surname.
Żejtun derives from the Arabic Zaytun which means olive because it was one of the main industry in this area. It was also known as Ħal-Bisbut or Casal Bisbut.
The Parish Church was buit in 1720 and its architect was Malta's Lorenzo Gafa'. It replaced the old Parish Church which today is known as San Girgor. The beautiful statue of St Catherine of Alexandria V.M. was cared in wood circa 1760.
Żejtun has two band clubs: The Beland Band Club established c. 1860 and the Żejtun Band Club esatablished circa 1933.
Some of the info was taken from the book The Parish of Żejtun through the ages by Rev. Joe Abela of Żejtun.
Our thanks to Maj. Tony Abela for his continuous support and cooperation and for providing some of the photos and for the informative tour he kindly gave us of Żejtun. Thanks also to Fr Joe Abela and the Parish Church, as well as to the Sagristan, Pawlu Żammit for the tour he gave us of the church and the crypts.

Marsamxett Harbour, Malta
Marsamxett Harbour, historically also referred to as Marsamuscetto, is a natural harbour on the island of Malta. It is located to the north of the larger Grand Harbour. The harbour is generally more dedicated to leisure use than the Grand Harbour.
Along its partner the Grand Harbour, Marsamxett lies at the centre of gently rising ground. This is now one of the most densely populated areas in Europe. The harbours and the surrounding areas make up Malta's Northern and Southern Harbour Districts. Together, these districts contain 27 of 68 local councils. They have a population of 213,722 which make up over 47% of the total population of the Maltese islands.

Buskett and Wied il-Luq, Malta

Gnien il-Kbir, il-Buskett & Wied il-Girgenti
This area is a large valley system supporting several habitat types, with important populations of trees.
The Ġnien il-Kbir/Ġnien iż-Żgħir valley system is characterised by a very rare riparian woodland habitat, based on the White Willow (safsafa kbira), the Mediterranean Willow (safsafa zgħira), the White Poplar (Luq) and the Hoary Elm (Ulmu).
Il-Girgenti hosts a number of interesting maquis communities, which also include a few large specimens of the very rare Myrtle (Riħan). Other maquis trees in the area include Lentisk (Deru), Carob (Ħarrub) and Bay Laurels (Rand).
The area known as Il-Bosk represents one of the four extant oak forest remnants in the Maltese Islands, typified by very old specimens of the Holm Oak (Ballut), as well as woodland under-storey species, of which Bay Laurel (Rand) and the Mediterranean Buckthorn (Alaternu) represent some of the rare tree species present in the area.
Wied il-Luq includes a riparian woodland with White Poplar (Luq), Narrow-Leaved Ash (Fraxxnu), English Elm (Ulmu) and the English Oak (Ballut). This area is the only known location in the wild for native female white poplar trees (Luq) in the Maltese Islands.
Il-Buskett area which includes the area around the Verdala Castle is essentially a semi-natural woodland based on Aleppo Pine (Żnuber) and Italian Cypresses (Ċipress). The area is also important as a concentration point for migratory birds of prey, many of which are of international importance.
MEPA declared this site as a Tree Protected Area on the 24th May 2011, in accordance with the provisions of the Trees and Woodlands Protection Regulations (2011) as per Government Notice number 473/11.
