The heritage listed Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the second longest wooden jetty in the world extending 1841 meters out to sea.
Construction of the Busselton Jetty began in 1865. Tourism in the 1880s began to increase and the Jetty was also used as a stopping point for many passenger ships, this began Busselton's life as a tourist town.
The Busselton Jetty has several other attractions, including the Jetty Train and an Underwater Observatory, where you can descend 8 metres underwater in an observation chamber to view the corals and fish life through eleven viewing windows.

Busselton Jetty in Busselton is the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere. We did a road trip and stopped in here on our way to the margeret river and also on the way back. the underwater observatory is at the very end of the busselton jetty.

The Busselton Jetty
Born in 1865 and standing at 1841 meters long, the Busselton Jetty is a regional icon. The survival of this structure through cyclone Alby, fire and hardship is a credit to the community of Busselton and the dedication of volunteer work & fundraisers. It now has an underwater observatory and a train service to get you all the way to the end! Busselton Jetty - January 2016
Busselton Jetty is the longest wooden jetty (pier) in the southern hemisphere, stretching almost 2 km out to sea from the town of Busselton, Western Australia. Because the shallow waters of Geographe Bay restricted ship movement, a long jetty was required so that cut timber could be transported to ships. I read on our first visit to Busselton in 2007 that a lot of the timber used to construct the London Underground came from Western Australia on ships loaded at Busselton Jetty. Since our visit in 2007 the previously burned out end of the jetty has been renovated. I didn't realise until looking at the video later that this extension has giant paintings of a Humpback, Blue Whale and Southern Right Whale...... what out for them! FISHING THE 2ND LONGEST JETTY IN THE WORLD - Bussleton Jetty for a Relaxing Weekend
We headed off 240 km south of Perth for the seaside get a away town of Bussleton, home of the second longest wooden jetty in the world. A Very casual weekend away with family with fishing not a priority, but managed a few little trips in. Calamari from the jetty. snorkling the Geograph Bay and a bit of beach fishing was absolutely surpurb. Highlight was having a calamari roll for breakfast before heading back.

Why we LOVE South West Australia - Busselton & Margaret River Ep.72
We trekked down to Busselton and settled ourselves into a van park for 2 nights. Our good mates Blaine & Shenaid from Camper Australis had made some last minute plans to come join us for the weekend. We explored the surrounds, visited some breweries, checked out some markets and fished off the iconic Busselton jetty.
After visiting Dunsborough and the surrounds, we really loved the atmosphere here. This has been the first place on our trip, we have both said we could live here. Eagle bay and Garnet Rocks took our breath away and are up there with some of our favourite beaches! Amz couldn’t resisit not visiting Simmo’s ice-creamery. She was in heaven trying to choose a flavour from their 40+ flavour range.
We are starting to get a taste of this south west, and understanding why people rave about it. Its still early days, but so far we are loving our time down here and can’t wait to see more. Next stop Margaret River through to Pemberton and surrounds.
Margaret River & surrounds
After leaving Busselton, we headed south into the Margaret River region. Setting ourselves up at ‘The Olive Farm’, a low cost campsite. You need to be self contained and all sites are unpowered at $15 a night (for 2 people). We found this a great spot to base ourselves while exploring all the surrounds.
For our first day we headed to Gracetown for a swim. The local beach had a pontoon anchored out in the water, so swam out did some flips between our sun baking. Working up quite the appetite and thirst, that we stopped by at the Cheeky Monkey for lunch. We then had a leisurely stroll through the town of Cowaramup which is only a small town, but covered in dairy cow sculptures. Rusty was a little unsure as we walked by them.
Prevelly was a nice sleepy town. Kurt had a fish at the River mouth and from the rocks just south of Gnarabup beach. We had a coffee at the White Elephant Cafe, which overlooked Gnarabup beach and boat ramp. It was quite a busy little spot with plenty of people coming and going, and this was midweek. While in Prevelly we also found a cool little cave. A good old ‘Wikicamps’ special, told us where to park and where the track was to reach it.
On another day, we also visited Yallingup to see all the sights around the area. We checked out Rabbits beach, Torpedo rock, spotted dolphins at Smiths beach and walked a little bit of the cape to cape track. The Injidup Natural spa was definitely amazing to see. A natural spa from the waves of the ocean, crushing over rocks which trickle down like a waterfall, giving a natural spa feel. Be sure to visit on high tide so you can see the full ‘spa effect’. c
A total of nine nights we spent at the Olive Farm, as it was so nice and relaxing. Each site had be designed so that you wouldn’t directly see your neighbours. It had a beautiful walk down to the river, through the forest with signs identifying each tree species. Just down the road was the Colonial Brewing Company, which does $10 pizzas every Friday night. We can confirm both pizzas and beers were delicious.
Overall we ate well, saw the sights, got a real feel for the area and had a lovely time in Margaret River and surrounds.
