Oldest Building In Galway - Aran Sweater Market, Quay Street, Galway.
Historic & hugely exciting news has emerged from the site of our new Aran Sweater Market building in Galway City that is due to open in March 2018!
Archaeologists working on the restoration of the medieval 16 th century Aran Sweater Market building on Quay St. have discovered within the first evidence of what is believed to be of a castle dating from the early 13th Century and the oldest stone building in Galway city.
It is believed that the two metre thick stone walls formed part of Dún na Gaillimhe, a castle built by the De Burgo family in 1232. The walls will be preserved and encased in glass, they will be viewable to the public in our new flagship knitwear outlet when it opens in March 2018.
Commenting on the announcement, Colm Mac Carthy, Managing Director of Aran Sweater Market said:
“Aran knitwear is part of the cultural heritage of the Galway region and it is fitting that significant examples of our archaeological and cultural heritage will be presented together in the Aran Sweater Market on Quay Street for all to see. It will be the only location where the oldest and original castle walls are visible.
It's a perfect match and with our heritage knitwear it will form another great tourist attraction for visitors to the entire region. Galway's oldest walls will be preserved and encased in glass, they will be viewable within the restored Aran Sweater Market when it opens in March. The development is located in the very heart of Galway and will further enhance the city's unique culture and character.”

Dingle town & peninsula, Ireland
Also, watch our new movie about the shops and pubs of Dingle,
We've been exploring the West Coast of Ireland and now we’re visiting Dingle which some people would say is the finest destination in the country. Dingle is a lush green peninsula extending out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Entering the Dingle Peninsula and passing through villages of Blennerville, Camp and Annascaul.
We stop by the roadside for a lovely view looking down towards the coast and across the green fields.
Next stop, Dingle, our home base for the next couple days. The town is one of Ireland's best with excellent hotels, of course many pubs, and in recent years, Dingle has become one of the gourmet capitals of the country with many fine restaurants. We will be taking you inside a couple of them. The drive in gave us a nice overview and will be taking you on several walks through town.
Most visitors find the real attraction is the surrounding areas with the beautiful countryside and the historic sites. With a few minute’s drive, you are at the edge of town and beyond that, you're in the countryside almost immediately.
So we hop in our van and do a tour of the peninsula. It's not unusual to run into some rain when you're out here in the far tip of Europe, in the Atlantic Ocean. And we had some rain this morning, but it cleared up a little bit during the day.
Dingle is a peninsula sticking into the sea at the western edge of Europe, set amid wild green scenery surrounded by the ocean.
One of the main historic sites you'll see is Dunbeg Fort. It's quite typical of the Celtic fortresses of the Iron Age in Ireland. It's built right up against the edge of a cliff, so it's easy to defend itself with the big walls on one side and the sea cliff on the other.

A Taste of Ireland Episode 7 West Mayo Brewery a wild atlantic way craft beer in Ireland
atasteof-ireland.com went to visit Oileán Éadaigh West Mayo Brewery in 2014. We met the founders Iain and Caroline Price in the rural parish of Islandeady, situated between Westport and Castlebar, in County Mayo on their working farm.
The brewery was inspired by their love for craft beer and the desire to provide consumers in County Mayo with a greater choice of quality ales. It was also a means to make the most of their small holding by a farm diversification project that was enjoyable, environmentally friendly and sustainable.
Caroline is originally from Islandeady and has always been involved with farming. They have cattle as well as chickens, and occasionally pigs. Caroline also keeps bees. She has worked for several organisations in the UK, mainly in I.T., and looks after the business side of the brewery in addition to line cleaning duties and assisting in deliveries!
Iain is the brewer. He trained with Brewlab at the University of Sunderland beginning in 2009 and is also a member of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, completing his IBD Diploma in Brewing (Dipl.Brew) in 2011.
