The ancient city of Butrint dates to between the 10th and 8th century BC. The National Park of Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
If you're interested in ancient Albania then this is a great historical site to visit and only a quick drive from Saranda, which is in the southern most part of the Albania Riviera.

SUBSCRIBE: - Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Following a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each period in the city’s development.
Albania, on Southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula, is a small country with Adriatic and Ionian coastlines and an interior crossed by the Albanian Alps. The country has many castles and archaeological sites. Capital Tirana centers on sprawling Skanderbeg Square, site of the National History Museum, with exhibits spanning antiquity to post-communism, and frescoed Et’hem Bey Mosque.

Our single-day cruise to the fascinating country of Albania is aimed at adventurous travellers seeking something out of the ordinary. From the Port of Corfu, we follow the Albanian coast to the city port of Saranda. After a short coffee break in Saranda, a 20 km guided coach tour of the south coast’s virgin shores and scattered islands is available for those who want it. Leaving the mainland again, we pass small picturesque villages and endless fertile plains that lead to a great lake.
The highlight of your day will be a visit to Butrint – an U NESCO World Heritage site. Over the centuries, the ancient town had disappeared under layers of silt and vegetation. In recent years, however, archaeologists have uncovered some of the finest working town remains in the Mediterranean. At the edge of the lake is the ancient city of Vouthrota. The Venetian Tower near the entrance, the ancient theatre, the Temple of Asclepius, the ancient gymnasium, the Roman Baths, the Roman Baptistery with its priceless mosaic floor, the Lion gate and the enormous Cyclopean walls will transport you back in time from 2,500 years till the 3rd century A.D. At the top of the hill stands the Venetian Castle, offering breath-taking, panoramic views of the ancient city, the lake and the vast plains below. Lunch is served upon your return to Saranda, after which there is a visit to Blue Eye – an underground spring more than 50 meters deep that creates a lake whose turquoise waters will fill you with feelings of energy and peace. In the afternoon, there will be a walking tour of Saranda, after which we finally depart this land that time forgot.

3. There is parking area in the Port of Corfu. (3 euros for 24 hours).
4. The departure time is subject to slight change according to local traffic conditions.
5. Duty Free is available at the Port of Corfu. (Please pay attention to restrictions listed at the Customs Office at the Port of Corfu regarding goods declaration).

We rented a car and went on a sightseeing mission around Saranda, Albania. Lots of things to do in Saranda but even more outside. We hit up Ksamil Beach(we think?!), Butrint which is a UNESCO site, the Blue Eye and even got lost along the way. Renting a car is always good times so highly recommended just like visiting Saranda, Albania at some point in your life...

We arrived in Saranda from Corfu on a fast boat (ferry) and this is what we did on our first day. We got breakfast at a very nice beach front restaurant and checked in to our beautiful budget friendly hotel. Our hotel owner was lovely and showed us around and gave us tips and advice on where to visit in Saranda. The hotel staff were really friendly and looked after us throughout our stay. If you are in Corfu on holiday I would highly recommend doing a day trip to Saranda as it's a beautiful place with really friendly people. Its also a very budget friendly destination compared to a lot of European countries. The Albanian Riviera will blow you away with its stunning beaches !

ALBANIA: Ancient CABLE FERRY CROSSES the historic CANAL of BUTRINT ⛴️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's cross the Vivari Channel which surrounds the marshes around the ancient Greek and Roman city of Butrint. The cable ferry that you see here is the easiest way to get yourself from one side of the channel to the other. The ferry is definitely old but the rusty cables and deteriorating boards add to the rustic (and somewhat sketchy) charm. The price list is unhelpfully located on the opposite side of the channel from the Butrint Park parking lot and doesn't seem to always be accurate anyhow. Prices seem to change according to the mood of the attendant on duty, but expect to pay 50-100 lek each way on foot, 150 lek on a bicycle, and 500 lek or more for a mid-sized car. Sometimes you can go across without paying if you are on foot and there is at least one paying vehicle going across as well.

Butrint - Albanien - Die Ruinenstadt
Butrint ist eine Ruinenstadt im Süden Albaniens, rund 20 Kilometer südlich der Stadt Saranda gelegen. Sie dehnt sich auf einer Halbinsel aus, die im Norden und Osten vom Butrintsee und im Süden vom Vivar-Kanal, der nach rund zweieinhalb Kilometern ins Ionische Meer mündet, umgeben ist. In Sichtweite liegt die griechische Insel Korfu.
Butrint zählt heute zu den beliebtesten Touristenzielen Albaniens und zu den berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten des Landes und wurde 1992 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
