Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism Center in India. The Thenmala Dam is a Famous ecotourism destination in Kerala. Thenamala Dam is the largest reservoir in kerala which was built under the Kallada Irrigation project.
Thenmala Ecotourism spreads along the middle of the Chenduruny Wildlife sanctuary. This is the largest irrigation project in Kerala. The Thenmala dam is the second largest irrigation project in Kerala, India.
The Nearest railway station is Punalur. Kollam-QLN is better connected nationally. The waterfall called Palaruvi Waterfall is a Main attraction nearby.
Thenmala Ecotourism attracts foreign and domestic tourists with a lot of attractions. Boating on the lake, a rope bridge, trekking, mountaineering, biking and a musical fountain.
Thenmala have 3 zones. Adventure Zone, Culture Zone, Leisure Zone.
Adventure Zone have Elevated Ropeway, Burma Bridge, Spider Net, Rock Climbing, Flying Fox, Boating, Coracle Ride, Archery, Shooting, Zipline, Zorbing, Mountain Biking.
Leisure Zone have Lush forested park with a riverside walkway, suspension bridge & a nature-themed sculpture garden.

A Date with Southern Birdwing butterfly at Thenmala
In India we haveabout1520 butterflies of which 340 are in Kerala.
Thenmala butterfly park is at the foothills of Western Ghats- a place where one can view most of these butterflies.
There are few places where you can view large butterflies called Papilionidae easily. On a rainy day in July 2019, when we reached Thenmala We were apprehensive whether we would find butterflies at all. But the brief interludes did not disappoint. An extremely knowledgable guide in the form of Sandex Verghese made our journey and visit to Thenmala worth every minute we spent there. Sighting of Southern Birdwing, Blue Mormon, Crimson Rose, Malabar Rose, Common Rose all in a span of about 30 minutes when the rains stopped. Dark blue tiger and glassy tiger obliged through the drizzle.
Troides minos, the southern birdwing,is a large and striking swallowtail butterfly endemic to south India. With a wingspan of 140–190 mm, it is the largest butterfly of India. It is listed as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List.
The species is more common in the Western Ghats, which is a biodiversity hotspot. It is much sought after by collectors and is a highlight of many butterfly tours in the Western Ghats. It is the state butterfly of Karnataka & Kerala.
The butterfly is locally very common (Garuda Shalabham) in the southern and central Western Ghats covering the states of Karnataka and Kerala. Also found in southern Maharashtra and northern Goa where it is uncommon. Despite its restricted range and endemicity, the butterfly is not known to be threatened but the IUCN recommends continuous monitoring.
Active during early morning hours when both sexes feed in the forest on Lantana, Pagoda bush flowers and diverse food plants. Later on, the male is seen sailing as high as 30 to 40 feet over the countryside until it descends later in the evening to feed again. It flies in a leisurely manner circling around jungle clearings and also frequents hill tops. A determined flier, it is known to cover very large distances before settling. The only food source is nectar, it also visits gardens and orchards and sips from domestic plants such as Mussaenda, Ixora and Lantana.
Though it flies all the year round, it is abundant during monsoon and post-monsoon periods.
The larval host plants of these butterflies are small creepers and climbers of the family Aristolochiaceae. The host plant toxins sequestered by the butterfly during its larval stage make it unpalatable to predators. Its flight and bright colouration advertise its unpalatability.

Thumboormuzhy Butterflypark is growing to be one of the important eco-tourism attractions in Chalakudy- Athirapally Ecotourism. A visit to Athirapally will be completed only with a visit to Thumboormuzhy. It is astonishing that Thumboormuzhy attracts more tourists than Athirapally. Tourists across the globe are visiting thumboormuzhy. Thumboormuzhy is natural habitat of various species of butterfly’s .Of course, butterfly sighting is seasonal.
