KTM Stesen Keretapi Butterworth Railway Station
Scenes from KTMB Butterworth Railway Station. The station is the terminus of ETS & Komuter Trains, with frequent ferry connections to George Town available close by. The station is also milepost 0 for KTM's West Coast Line south through to Johor Baru, and it's northern section to Padang Besar on the border with Thailand. Freight passes through the station en-route to North Butterworth Container Terminal.
Butterworth Train Station
This modern, busy station mostly serves passengers travelling to/from Penang island, which is linked by a nearby ferry.
Ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station (Malaysia)
We follow the crossing by ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station in Malaysia having originally arrived by train from Bangkok Thailand as here: From Butterworth Station is is an easy 5 minute walk to find the pier for Georgetown (Penang). Note, ATMs are not easy to find on arrival so you may want to exchange money on the train between Hat Yai and Padang Besar, where hawkers offer decent exchange rates. The boat to Penang costs only 1.2 RM and the journey takes roughly 20mins. On arrival I suggest just crossing the road and following Chulia Street to the main tourist stretch of Georgetown. There are taxis but don’t expect them to use meters and opt to pay a fixed price of no more than 15RM throughout the nearby Georgetown area.

TRAIN MISSION FROM KUALA LUMPUR TO PENANG | Butterworth to Georgetown Travel Vlog 086, 2017
At 2am we decided to book the KTM Train from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on the ETS line! It actually goes to Butterworth train station, next to Butterworth ferry port, and then you need to take the Penang Ferry. ⬇ Click 'Show More' to expand ⬇
Dayum, we were sort of prepared for it, but didn't realise how long it would take to train and ferry our way from Kuala Lumpur to Penang. The ferry portion was easy, as was the initial train, the only long part was the 4 hour train covering the most distance from KL.
The Butterworth KTM station doesnt really have any sign posting to get to the Penang Ferry, but it is pretty straight forward.
Georgetown seems like an awesome place, after a few days looking around we're pleased we managed to squeeze George Town and Penang into our Malaysia adventures!

Butterworth, Malaysia KTMB Train Station
I took the overnight train from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth. We got into Butterworth at about 5:30am. The transfer from the train station to the ferry to Georgetown is extremely easy - all you have to do is follow everyone else, it's about a 5 minute walk.

Best of Penang: Butterworth Train Station (KTM)
The old Butterworth train station has been demolished to make way for a new state of the art transport hub for trains and buses, known as Penang Sentral. In its place is a new Butterworth railway station that is now open, sending travellers to all parts of Malaysia and also across border to Singapore and Thailand.

Penang Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur KL Malaysia by KTMB Train
I took the first train to KL from Butterworth Station operated by
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad or Malayan Railways Limited
The first train leaves 6:10AM and takes about four hours to Kuala Lumpur. I barely noticed half of the trip because... I was asleep! I hope I did not snore lol. Everyone else near me on the train was asleep too so I guess it is that comfortable.
If you guys have taken this train let me know in the comments below!
