Buttevant is a medieval market town, incorporated by charter of Edward III, situated in North County Cork, Ireland. While there may be reason to suggest that the town may occupy the site of an earlier settlement of the Donegans, Carrig Donegan, the origins of the present town are clearly and distinctly Norman, and closely connected with the settlement of the Barrys from the 13th century. Here they built their principal stronghold in North Cork. Buttevant is located on the N20 road between Limerick and Cork and the R522 regional road. The Dublin–Cork railway line passes by the town, but there was a station from which at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, newly raised battalions of the Royal Munster Fusiliers and the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who had completed their training at the local military barracks, set out for the Western Front.

The Place

The Franciscan friary of Buttevant is located in the small market town of the same name on the banks of the River Awbeg, Co. Cork. It was founded by the de Barry family in 1251, most likely David I (d.1261), lord of Buttevant. It is also possible, but unlikely, that it was founded during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307) by David I’s son, David de Barry II (d. 1278). The latter was buried in the choir of the church in 1279, around the time a slender tower was inserted between the nave and chancel. The church and its south transept survive, as well as a crypt underneath the choir. The friary became the burial place of de Barrys, and Buttevant remained the principal residence of the senior branch of the family throughout the Middle Ages.

Found by the de Barry family in 1251 .
The ruins of the friary are one of the earliest surviving examples of Franciscan architecture in Ireland.

David Barry, 1st Earl of Barrymore, 19th Baron Barry, 6th Viscount Buttevant was the posthumous child of David Barry, the son of David de Barry, 5th Viscount Buttevant, and Elizabeth Power, daughter of Richard Power, 4th Baron le Power and Curraghmore.He was born 10 March 1604 and succeeded to the Barrymore estates on 10 April 1617 on the death of his grandfather.In 1631 he married the Lady Alice Boyle, daughter of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork, by his second wife, Catherine Fenton.Through Cork's influence he was created Earl of Barrymore on 28 February 1628.

The parish is situated just south of Mallow, on the main Mallow-Cork Road and Rail Line. The population of the parish is about 1,000 people.
