???? Confreda Greenhouses & Farms
2150 Scituate Ave, Hope, RI 02831
The Confreda family began farming in 1922. Farming just over 400 acres of land in Cranston and Warwick, their operations represent one of the oldest and largest commercial vegetable farms in the state of Rhode Island. Through the years, the Confreda family has worked to provide customers with high quality produce, always expanding their efforts to bring customers into the family farm experience.
In the 1970s, Vinny Confreda created a bedding plant division. He now grows over 160 varieties of annuals, 90 varieties of vegetables, 75 varieties of hanging plants and over 90 varieties of specialty products. This division services garden centers in RI and as far north as the New Hampshire border to the end of Cape Cod.
Confreda’s Farmer’s Market and Garden Center opened in 1997, as an endeavor by the Confreda family to expand the business beyond the typical season and strife of New England farming. Wanting to not only expand the business but also enrich the community, they modeled their facility after a classic family farm. Customers could get fresh produce at the Farmer’s Market and high quality plants and planting material at the Garden Center. Families could also visit the ice cream shoppe, bakery, and playground.
Today, Vinny, Sr. (3rd generation) and his sons Vinny, Jonathan and Corey (4th generation) manage the family business. Their continued dedication to quality is evident in the Confreda Commitment. And that Commitment is to you, the customer!

Sunflowers are available while supplies last. Bouquets of 5 sunflowers will be given in exchange for a $10 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut. Due to overwhelming demand, we are unable to reserve or hold sunflower bouquets. There are no flowers available for U-Pick or cut-your-own.
100% of proceeds of our sunflower sales are given directly to Make-A-Wish, as well as proceeds from our t-shirt sales, which feature a unique sunflower design each season.

Buttonwood Farm opens its sunflower fields for a week-long festival for people to enjoy the sunflowers at their peak. On a beautiful sunny day, the sunflowers glow. The farm offers visitors freshly made ice cream, rated as the best in the state, and the sunflower flavor is a speciality. Sunflowers - 14 acres of sunflowers
Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, Connecticut is the place to go when you want awesome homemade ice cream and you want to bask in the glow of a 14 acres of sunflowers. Buttonwood Farm was named by Foursquare as one of the best places in to get ice cream in Connecticut. Back in 2003 the owners of the farm decided to plant an acre of sunflowers. Over the course of that year they found that people were driving from miles around just to look at the sunflowers and take pictures of them. At the end of the season they used the seeds for feed for their animals and today they not only use the seeds as feed but they sell bunches of sunflowers to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.
Come view more than 14 acres of sunflowers in bloom, enjoy a hayride, and contribute to a wonderful cause. Don’t forget to try the sunflower ice cream – available only during this event.

The Leonard Cemetery in Griswold - Jewett City, CT (Near Preston)
After we arrived at Hopeville Pond State Park, just north of Preston in August, 2002, I wanted to find some of our ancestors grave sites. We left the park, drove south down Bethel Road to head toward the Preston City Cemetery. On our left, we passed a small cemetery - the Leonard Cemetery. We decided to stop and look around a bit. To our surprise, there were dozens of grave sites of the Starkweather and Leonard clans. After doing a little looking around I realized that this was Hanna Leonard's family cemetery - Hanna being the wife of John Starkweather, the father of William Starkweather of Plymouth, MI, and our GGGG grandmother. Hannah's grave is in the Preston cemetery and is shown in another video.
This was quite exciting at the time, grave stones well over 200 years old and beautiful carvings on many of the headstones. It's sad to see however, that many of the stones over time have been worn and weathered, some are barely readable.
Here is a little trick if you are into the hobby of hunting for ancient graves of ancestors and the like - bring with you large sheets of blank newsprint, and a big hunk of artists charcoal, both available at most art supply stores. Place the newsprint over a barely readable headstone, press it against the text or carvings, and rub the charcoal on the paper. Even the most difficult to read stones should transfer fairly well to the paper, and you will have a nice keepsake for yourself or for genealogy research.

2014 Ballona Wetlands Alternative to Bulldozing, Margot Griswold, Restoration Ecologist's
Margot Griswold, Restoration Ecologist, offers a conservation minded alternative to bulldozing the Ballona Wetlands, as proposed by the Bay Foundation. Dr. Griswold explains that these historical wetlands have not had full tidal flow (proposed by the Bay Foundation) for thousands of years. Spend an hour watching Dr. Griswold's presentation; you will feel hope and awe for all the species you will meet. I learned effortlessly as she shared her vast knowledge of the history of Ballona. Her passion for the Ballona Wetlands is evident throughout. Jonathan Coffin's Ballona Wildlife Photos made my experience all the more worthwhile. Kudos, Margot and the Airport Marina Group of the Sierra Club for hosting her. Thanks to Patricia McPherson of Grassroots Coalition for this You Tube Video of the entire presentation including audience interaction.
