Buzludzha in the clouds (Bulgaria)
My latest drone video this summer in Bulgaria …
Buzludzha (Бузлуджа) - is a historical peak in the Central Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria. The mountain is located to the east of the Shipka Pass near the town of Kazanlak and is a site of historical importance.
Unfortunately, I lost 50% of my drone footage for an unknown reason … Managed to salvage some from the SD card and make this video …
Enjoy in HD ;-)

Pictures from my visit of the epic Buzludzha Monument, Bulgaria.
The Mysterious Buzludzha Monument in Bulgaria
This is the Budludzha Monument in North Central Bulgaria. It's become a viral sensation and entered on many lists of creepiest places on earth. I now know why given it's a communist monument erected in the 1980s during the communist regime in Bulgaria. It was used for ceremonies amongst other events during the reign of communism until its fall where it has sat abandoned for 30+ years standing as an eerie time capsule of the time. Watch my guided tour around the outside! You cant go in anymore due to the instability of the building! If only there was a way to see inside still!
Buzludzha: A crumbling reminder of communism | The Economist
Buzludzha was once the futuristic, flying-saucer shaped headquarters of the Communist Party in Bulgaria, but it is now a semi-ruin after being left to rot.

This is Buzludzha, the former home of Bulgaria's Communist Party which lies 200 kilometers east of Sofia. It was built in 1981, at a time when the power of the communist regime seemed unshakable. Now it's crumbling. When it was first commissioned enormous effort was put into constructing the building. It was 15 million Levs, or $35 million today and five years in the making.
6,000 workers, including artists, sculptors, and soldiers from the Bulgarian army came together to construct this elegant monstrosity. Their aim? To create a building that would impress, inspire, and intimidate to make visible the might of the Communist Party. For some the marble and mosaics were a source of pride. For others it was a constant reminder of communisms firm grip on society.
Less than a decade after Buzludzha was opened the communist regime was overthrown and as Bulgarians embrace democracy, this epic monument to communism was abandoned.
ownership of Buzludzha has fallen to the post communist state. But Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in the European Union and it does not have enough money to maintain or repair it. Instead, the building has been left to the elements.
But there is a haunting beauty in the buildings decline, and people have recently been finding creative uses for the space. Huben Hubenov, editor of a fashion magazine in Bulgaria, staged a photo shoot there in July. It has also been used for art exhibitions, workshops, and as a backdrop for a music video by a French pop band. Even though it's technically closed, dozens of visitors explore Buzludzha every week. The area isn't serviced by public transport so the curious must drive or bike some 30 kilometers outside of a town called Gabrovo, up a dangerous mountain road. Once there, they'll confront crumbling staircases, barred entrances, and broken glass. To enter they must crawl through a small opening on the side of the building, and over a 10 meter drop.
Experts believe a full renovation would cost over $19 million - a price tag that leaves Bulgarians conflicted. Some suggest demolishing the structure. Others think it could be used as a museum to remember communism - but even this is controversial.
25 years after its completion, Buzludzha is still a divisive topic. Bulgarians have different visions for its future but most agree that it should have one.

It took 2 days to get find a way to get inside, we had to drive to the closest town (not that close) and buy some rope so we could abseil down into its basement.
WOW!! So worth the effort. Check out the inside here -

NONUMENT on Buzludzha Peak, trailer, English audio
14 Sept 2019
Towards it end, the 24. Gabrovo Biennial presents Nonument – an exhibition at the Museum of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo, Bulgaria and a performance piece by LIGNA group (Germany), Stephan A. Shtereff and music by Emiliyan Gatsov – Elbi, which took place in front of the Buzludzha Monument (Buzludzha Peak, Balkan Mountain).
Nonuments are monuments that have transformed or lost their symbolic value due to changes in ideology. Erected as sites of glorification and remembrance nonuments are neglected, forgotten and left to the elements, reminders of unattained utopias, coercion and complicity. Presenting examples from Central and Eastern Europe from the Nonument.org platform, the show highlights the Buzludzha monument, built as a house of the Bulgarian Communist Party on the Buzludzha Peak of the Balkan Mountain.
The performance takes the form of a radioballet – an audio script, listened to and acted out by the audience, whose members are taken on a walk around the Buzludzha Monument, experiencing its architecture, revisiting scenes from its history and instructed to perform casual gestures, some of which remind discreet gestures of protest, such as the ones once performed by Jiří Kovanda in the Prague of 1976 or Erdem Gündüz at Gezi Park in the Istanbul of 2013.
The exhibition and performance are part of M.A.P.S. project and are realized in collaboration between the Museum of Humour and Satire (Bulgaria), Informbureau Association (Bulgaria), MoTA (Slovenia), WHMEDIA (Austria), Tačka komunikacije (Serbia), Centre for Central European Architecture (Prague), ArtOS Foundation(Cyprus) and with support from Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission, the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria and with the collaboration of Stara Zagora Regional Government.

Take A Look Inside The Abandoned Buzludzha Monument In Bulgaria
Watch more videos of abandoned places worldwide on Exploring the Unbeaten Path.
There's an abandoned monument in Bulgaria filled with communist propaganda. Construction cost the equivalent of $35 million today. Earlier this year, a group of adventurers visited the monument and documented their experience on YouTube at Exploring the Unbeaten Path.
Welcome to Buzludzha Monument — a historical monument built for the Bulgarian Communist Party. It was finished in 1981 after 8 years of construction, made out 70,000 tons of concrete and 3,000 tons of steel. But it was abandoned in 1989, the same year that the Bulgarian Communist regime fell.
Today, it's off-limits to the public but that didn't stop a crew of videographer. They explore abandoned places worldwide and document it on YouTube at Exploring the Unbeaten Path. Surprisingly, many of the monument's distinct features remain intact. The whole place is filled with communist propaganda. It features communist legends like Lenin and Karl Marx, as well as the famous hammer and sickle communist symbol boldly placed in the center of its vast ceremonial hall. The monument is a relic of a time not too long ago and a testament to how quickly times change.
