A Craft Beer Minute - Buzzard's Bay Brewing
We shot this Craft Beer Minute at Buzzard's Bay Brewing just before the end of 2018. Located on a scenic working farm in Westport, Massachusetts, it's one of the state's oldest breweries, celebrating its 20th anniversary. In addition to the original cozy taproom with a wood burning stove, dart boards, and fresh pints, they recently added a new structure called The Kettle that has room to spare and a small stage for live music.
Narragansett Private Stock Bohemian Pilsner - The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer found a special beer made to honor the 122 years of Narragansett history, it's called Narragansett Private Stock Bohemian Pilsner.
Brewed by: Narragansett Brewing Co. Rhode Island, United States
The Imperial IPA was crafted with the best of American and German ingredients as a nod to the original six German-American founders of Narragansett. Summit hops were used for all the kettle hopping, and a mix of Northern Brewers, Hallertau, Tettanager, and Sazz hops were used for dry hopping, resulting in an IBU of 122 to celebrate 122 years of Narragansett history.

As part of the Private Stock series, the Imperial Bohemian Pilsner is now available. This beer will weigh in at 8.6% ABV, 35 IBUs and will be the first unfiltered offering from Narragansett. The Imperial Bohemian Pilsner delivers light bitterness in the front followed by a full bodied malt flavor, complimented by fruity and spicy, earth toned noble hops. It's craft brewed in small batches at Buzzards Bay Brewery in Westport, MA under the supervision of award-winning brewmaster Sean Larkin from Trinity Brewhouse and Revival Brewing in Providence. This brew is made with Pale malt, Pilsner malt, Wheat Malt and Cara Blonde malt from Belgium. It's then bittered with Northern Brewer hops, and Hallerteau Hops and also double dry hopped with Hallerteau. Much like the 122nd Anniversary Imperial IPA, this will be available for a limited time in 22oz bomber bottles and draft in RI, MA, CT, NYC and NC. Ask for it at your local retailer today. Hi Neighbor!
It all started with John H. Fehlberg, Augustus F. Borchandt, Herman G. Possner, George M. Gerhard, Constand A. Moeller, and Jacob Wirth. In 1888, these local businessmen—The Original Six—came together to form the Narragansett Brewing Company. With $150,000 in capital and funds from Butterine (Fehlberg's predecessor to margarine), a brick brewing house was built. In December of 1890, the first beer was produced, and the following year the company officially incorporated.
Getting back to our story, in 1891, the Narragansett Brewing Company concocted nearly 28,000 barrels of beer under the company's promise of the purest ingredients, uncompromised cleanliness, and absolute perfection ofbrew. Let's not forget about the brewers themselves, who poured their souls into every batch. Without their honor and merit, Gansett would never have had the chance to be so loved.
Then in 1914, when the company built the most modern bottling plant in the region, it became official: Narragansett Brewing Company was the largest lager beer brewery in New England.
The 1920s were a sobering time for everyone who had grown to love Narragansett—literally. Prohibition took a toll on many, especially the Narragansett Brewing Company. Despite being granted permission by the IRS to brew, bottle and sell beer for medicinal purposes, things looked grim for the proud company. By the end of Prohibition, the Narragansett Brewing Company's financial condition was not what it used to be.
That's where the Haffenreffers come into play. Rudolph Haffenreffer had built one of Boston's first brewery complexes, and when he passed away in 1929, the New England Brewing Company was turned over to his sons Rudolf, Jr. and Theodore.
In 1931, the repeal of Prohibition appeared likely and Narragansett BrewingCompany approached Rudolf, Jr. for help financing and managing the modernization of the brewery. Fortunately, he agreed.
It was by sheer luck that Rudolf, Jr. turned out to be a savvy marketer with a keen interest in cigar-store Indians. Stay with us here, as the two would come together when a young artist by the name of Theodore Geisel (who'd soon be known as Dr. Seuss), was hired to design an icon for the company.
Geisel designed Chief Gansett, and while the beloved icon may not have been the sole reason for the financial turnaround, he sure would become a favorite of the faithful.
Rudolf Haffenreffer Jr. would eventually become president and chairman of Narragansett Brewing Company and remain involved until his death in 1954. The Haffenreffer brewery in Boston survived until 1965, at which time, brands like Haffenreffer Lager Beer, Pickwick Ale and Pickwick Bock Beer became the property of the Narragansett Brewing Company.
