Art Brussels showcases Europe's best contemporary art
(20 Apr 2018) LEADIN:
Showcasing one of Europe's best contemporary art selection, the annual Art Brussels fair has just opened its doors.
Established 50 years ago, Art Brussels has become an influential event in the international art scene, with a loyal following among collectors and galleries.
STORYLINE
Art lovers from all over the world take to the Belgian capital for the opening of Art Brussels.
The fair is one of Europe's most prestigious contemporary art events.
Art Brussels features 147 art galleries from 32 countries; it displays the works of over 2,000 international artists, both emerging talents and well-established artists.
Creativity takes countless forms here: nods to the past and references to painting greats stand side by side with trailblazing contemporary artworks.
The show is equally devoted to the discovery of younger, emerging talents in addition to well-known names.
Anne Vierstraete is Art Brussels' director; she says the fair has developed a unique approach that sets it apart from other international art shows.
Art Brussels is somewhat distinct from other art fairs in the way we show the art and the kind of art we show and also the prominence we give to our discovery section.
And so in this we have a profile of showing art that is not necessarily seen at other art fairs. Collectors follow us since years and are very loyal to the fair. So somehow we are a not-to-be-missed rendezvous in the art calendar, Vierstraete says.
Galleries from all over the world, from China, Russia, Cuba, to the United States, Luxembourg and Greece seize this opportunity to showcase their talents.
Founded in 1968, Art Brussels started with just 11 dealers and has become one of Europe's oldest art fairs.
This year marks its 50th anniversary.
Event organizers say there's reason to celebrate as the show has evolved from a minor enterprise to an influential event; it has succeeded in creating an encounter between art and art enthusiasts, artists and collectors.
The secret for enduring the test of time lays in Art Brussels' uniqueness, Vierstraete says.
We last since 50 years. In a very competitive world which has become completely globalised such as the global art scene I really think that we endured because of our specific identity, the director says.
Belgium is known to be a country of collectors and that helps attract artists to the main cities, Art Brussels organizers say.
The Belgian capital, in particular, is a dynamic place where talents can thrive and easily get connected with both peers and curators.
Brussels has a very vibrant art scene which is totally informal because it's also a small city and so everybody is connected, the artists with the curators with the museum directors; and it's all very easy-going. And that, I think, is a bit different because you don't have this hierarchy of the big institutions.
Also the space: there are a lot of artist studios in Brussels because the market is quite affordable; you can rent beautiful spaces, large ones. And so there is kind of a secondary, very vibrant scene in Brussels, Vierstraete explains.
Elena Sorokina is the curator of Mystic Properties, Art Brussels' artistic project, created in tandem with the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) of Ghent.
Sorokina - who's also a curator at HISK - has invited the project's artists to conceive their works as a reflection on one of art history's masterpieces: the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
Art Brussels runs from 19 to 22 April.

BELGIUM: BRUSSELS: ARCHITECT HORTA RECOGNISED FOR HIS ART NOUVEAU
Dutch/Nat
Even casual visitors to the Belgian capital cannot miss the architectural gems of Art Nouveau style that glimmer in the urban greyness.
Although Brussels' urbanisation policy in recent decades led to many of these masterpieces being torn down, Art Nouveau's founding father Victor Horta is finally being appreciated.
Brussels is not really known for its architectural splendour.
But there is one exception: Art Nouveau.
Victor Horta is generally seen as the movement's founding father, which began around the end of the 19th century.
Born in Ghent in 1861, Victor Horta was the son of a shoemaker of Italian descent.
He studied architecture in Ghent, as well as in Paris and Brussels.
Although he is seen as one of the supreme originals of modern architecture, he had to wait for many years to receive public recognition.
His Art Nouveau style was often seen as too daring.
Now, almost 50 years after his death in 1947, Horta's creations are finally being recognised as the work of a revolutionary architect.
This year Brussels brought to light what maybe Belgium's greatest-ever architectural talent.
But, Horta was not just a casual architect.
He created tailor-made homes, designing everything: from the letter box and doorknobs to furniture, cutlery, and even the garden.
SOUNDBITE: (Dutch)
Horta is an all around architect, who designed everything himself and rethought and recreated everything. Starting with the smallest detail to the whole. I would say from the keyhole to the whole house.
SUPERCAPTION: Jos Vandenbreeden, director city archives Brussels
Horta's designs swept aside the dim and stodgy townhouses of Belgium's capital.
He introduced new and fresh ideas in the conservative thinking towards housing.
At the end of the 19th century metal and steel had become common materials in the construction of train stations and large market halls.
In 1889 Gustave Eiffel highlighted the use of iron with his well known tower in Paris.
Horta's merit was to introduce these materials into house-building.
Horta also brought daylight into the sombre interiors.
By placing a skylight above the stairwell and making ingenious use of mural mirrors, he illuminated rooms in dramatic fashion.
All this creativity didn't hinder the city developers who destroyed most of its heritage.
SOUNDBITE: (Dutch)
In the meantime a lot has been torn down, because of the lack of appreciation of Horta's architecture. This lack of appreciation started very early, just after World War 1
SUPERCAPTION: Jos Vandenbreeden, director city archives Brussels
Sadly Horta's masterpiece, the Maison du Peuple (the People's House) which was built in 1899 in the centre of Brussels, is no more.
The large complex of glass and metal contained the headquarters of the Socialist Party as well as shops, a cafe, a library and even a ballroom.
Despite the protest of some 500 international architects, the building was torn down in 1965.
Only a few stones of this famous Horta artwork have been preserved.
And what some say adds insult to injury, the Maison du Peuple was replaced with a huge and some say ugly office tower.
It's ironic that his work is only now being recognised, almost 50 years after his death.
Horta's own house, now a museum, is currently under renovation.
During the next three months Brussels is staging an important exhibition that highlights his extravagant creations.
Several organizations are offering walks through Brussels highlighting the remaining Art Nouveau treasures.

For the tenth time, the Brussels Antiques & Fine Arts Fair will take place in the large halls of the mail sorting station of Thurn & Taxis The exhibition space comprises a total surface of 15.400 m², spread over room 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the building A. This historical building, located along the Willebroek canal, is a wonderful example of the Belgian industrial architectural heritage. It was built around 1903-1904 according to the plans of the architect Van Humbeek and was originally used as a storage place for transit merchandise. Technically seen it is the most astonishing building of the site, covered by a phenomenal metal frame of 17.000 m². The complex is situated in the heart of Brussels, only a few minutes from Place Rogier, the North Station and the tube station Yser.
VOLUME ARCHITECTURE
Also this year the interior design of the different rooms of the fair will be done by Nicolas de Liedekerke and Daniel Culot of Volume Architecture. They participate actively to the creation of a general image of the 58th Brussels Antiques & Fine Arts Fair at the site of Tour & Taxis. Their team will once again render a unique creative touch to the architecture of this formal sorting centre.
