Kiteboarding Travel Guide: Cape Town South Africa - Destinations EP 16
Welcome to Destinations your one stop kiteboarding video travel guide. If you have any questions when planning your trip, don't hesitate to reach out.
There's a place way down in the Southern Hemisphere where the scenery will steal your heart and the wind will knock you off your feet. It sounds intense and it is... in all the best ways! In this edition of Destinations, we're checking out a kite spot that's close to my heart: Cape Town, South Africa.
Cape Town is the home of the Red Bull King of the Air, and a popular kiteboarding hotspot. In the high season, it seems like the entire kiteboarding community comes together. Kitesurfers come from all over the world to chase their Big Air dreams and to kite with the legends of the sport.
On your average January day at Kite Beach in Cape Town, having the likes of Jesse Richman, Aaron Hadlow, Kevin Langeree, and Ruben Lenten throwing huge megaloops over you would not be an unusual sight! Not to mention the up and coming riders that spend their season training in these extreme conditions...
In this blog, we'll cover everything you need to know about kiteboarding in Cape Town. Scroll down to find out travel tips and advice for this epic South African destination.

#NianticLive2020 Cape Town, South Africa
#CapeTown #PokémonGO #Ingress #NianticLive2020 #WizardsUnite
Hello Niantic and welcome to our submission for #NianticLive2020!
We’re a group of dedicated Ingress, Pokémon GO and Harry Potter Wizards Unite players from all over the Western Cape and we would like to introduce you to our home city, Cape Town. We hope our video has answered all of your questions, but just to cover our bases we’ll answer them below as well:
• Is there a big, beautiful park of 50-100+ acres?
Yes, the Green Point Urban Park along with the adjacent sports fields total more than 75 acres. As the Japanese Pokémon GO Fest 2019 took place across multiple smaller parks we feel that using 2 locations that are right next to each other won’t be a problem. We have been in contact with all the relevant parties and both areas are more than happy to host an event. If more space is needed, the Sea Point Promenade is a public space located next to the park and adds an additional 15-40 Acres, depending on area used, and another 20-40+ in game POI's.
• Is the park centrally located?
Yes, It’s one of the most central locations in Cape Town. It’s easy to get to most of the tourist attractions in town either on foot or via a quick bus ride.
• Do they allow festivals in the park?
Yes, It’s quite popular for festivals and various events.
• Is it in a safe area?
Yes. Green Point is regarded as one of the safest areas in Cape Town. As a tourist hotspot it’s always busy.
• Do you get a strong cell phone signal at the park? Is there wireless connectivity?
The Park has fantastic signal. We’ve had several PoGO Community Days, Ingress First Saturdays as well as a few unofficial community events in the park. However, We would recommend using cell reception boosters given the amount of players that would attend an event.
• Are there dates available to hold an event?
Yes. At the time of contacting the area representatives the 2020 calendar is still quite open. The sports fields are generally in use until the end of September, therefore we recommend that an event should be held in Summer for the best experience (Winter is our rainy season). Cape Town summer is from November to February. Why not come for Christmas on the beach?
• Is the city a place that is financially accessible?
Yes. Cape Town in consistently voted as one of the top travel destinations in the world. It’s definitely affordable, especially if you’re coming with Dollars, Euros and Pounds thanks to a favourable exchange rate.
• Is the park close to hotels and public transportation?
Yes, a lot of both.
• Does the city, including the Police Department, support the idea of an event there?
Yes. Tourism is Cape Town’s primary income.
• Are there other, competing events going on during the planned event dates?
Not likely, the 2020 calendar is still quite open.
• Is there enthusiasm of the player community in that city?
Yes. Definitely. We have a lot of extremely dedicated players in not only the city, but the whole of South Africa. An event in Cape Town will draw players from all over the country.
• What is the density of Points of Interest?
39+ Portals / 23+ Pokéstops & Gyms. From what we’ve seen Grant Park in Chicago had roughly 55 portals / 15 stops & gyms in the event area, so we’re not far off.
• Is the park in an architecturally or historically interesting area?
Yes, it’s in one of our most historic suburbs and near the iconic V&A Waterfront. There are also numerous museums and beautiful, historic buildings nearby.
• Will we have the ability to load in and load out commercial vehicles and physical builds/decor?
Yes. All suggested areas support access for trucks and have open spaces for builds and decor.
• Can we close roads to car traffic?
Yes. For events in the area, it’s quite common for the roads to be closed.
• Can non-players still use the park while we host our event?
It depends on your preference. Both options are available as the park has gated entry points.
• Is there parking available?
Yes. Both the park and the sports facilities have lots of parking.
• What is the typical weather for the park on the dates being considered?
Summer in Cape Town is fantastic. Warm, sunny days. 27°-29°C (80-85°F)
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to watch the video, read the description and consider Cape Town for an event!

Cape Town Central
Cape Town has always prided itself on its rich cultural heritage, reflected in a wide variety of arts and cultural events, diverse architecture and food and wine of internationals repute; all available right in the inner city area.
The Central Business District of Cape Town is situated at the foot of iconic Table Mountain, facing north over Table Bay and the working harbour that first gave shelter to 17th century ships as they travelled the trade routes between Europe and the East.
Because the CBD covers less than one square mile, a walking tour such as Footsteps to Freedom is to be recommended. All 350 years of South Africa's history is covered in less than four hours.
The Castle of Good Hope, once at the water edge is now the eastern boundary of the city centre. On the western edge on the slopes of Signal Hill, is the colourful Bo-Kaap area, originally the designated living area of the Malay labourers, who were been brought to the Cape as political prisoners during the Dutch East India Company's presence in Cape Town in the 17th century.
But even though Cape Town is an old City, the modern architecture of the CBD is seldom jarring and includes several award winning designs.
There is accommodation in the CBD to suit all budgets, from 5star splendour to Backpackers specials.

Cape Town , A Windy Day
Dec 2013 , Cape Town gets a bit windy. Certain times of the year , mainly the summer months the wind can pick up to some amazing speeds. The Cape Town high buildings catch the wind and some how the wind increases in strength and speed and you can go to certain spots ( about 100 meter by 100 meters ) and the wind will be Extremely strong in those spots , If you move around to other parts of Cape Town , one might experience little or just hat blowing wind.
