Loco Travel: Inawashiro - Part 6 (Tsurugajyo Castle in Aizu-Wakamatsu)
Just 30 minutes away from Inawashiro, Aizu-Wakamatsu is a center of historical activity in the area.
Tsurugajyo Castle was once a partner to Kamegajyo Castle -- Tsuru means Crane and Kame means Turtle. In Japanese, Crane and Turtle somehow match each other to mean something very lucky. Honestly, I don't know the details about it, but apparently there's a term tsurukame which mixes the two and means something along the lines of good luck. If someone knows more, please share in the comments!
Kamegajyo was in Inawashiro and was burnt down at the end of the Edo Period. Tsurugajyo was also burnt down, but was rebuilt in 1967, and that's what you see here.
It's a really awesome town to visit. If you go, make sure to try some local Sake, eat Sauce Katsu-don, and learn a little bit about the Boshin War and the Byakkotai fighters who commited suicide because they mistakenly thought their castle was burning down.

Sazaedo / FUKUSHIMA
Down the northern side of hill Iimoriyama, located in Aizu-Wakamatsu, you can find the Sazaedo pagoda, an important cultural property of Japan. Completed in 1796, this architectural masterpiece is famous for its double helix staircase ー people who go up and down the pagoda at the same time will never cross paths. Further up the hill are the 19 tombs of the Byakkotai soldiers, an army of teenagers who commited mass suicide out of honour to their lord in 1868, after the Tsuruga Castle (Wakamatsu Castle) was attacked.

Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima prefecture has a mystical quality I can't quite describe. The last stand for the samurai before the Meiji Era, this city houses multiple cultural sites: the gravesite of the Byakko-tai, a bukeyashiki samurai manor, and the reproduction of Tsuruga Castle.

・飯盛山 白虎隊の墓 19 Tombs of the Byakkotai
白虎隊とは、1860年代に会津軍として戦った16歳から17歳の若者たちのことです。1868年に起きた戊辰戦争では、多くの幼い子どもや女性たちが会津を守るため戦いました。
Byakkotai is the young samurai unit (16-17 years old) of Aizu forces 1860s.
Boshin war in 1868, many young kids and ladies join the war to protect Aizu.

白虎隊たちは、飯盛山の中腹から城下が燃える様子を見て、もはやこれまでと、その場で自刃する道を選びました。
They decided they could hold on no longer when they see the burning town from the middle of Mt. Imoriyama. Then, they chose to kill themselves there.
・御薬園 Oyakuen(Daimyo Garden)
御薬園は会津の武将たちの療養所でした。名前の意味は薬草園で、会津の人々を疫病などから守るために、たくさんの薬草が育てられていました。現在でも400種類の薬草が育てられています。庭園ではお抹茶を楽しむこともできます。
Oyakuen was a villa of Aizu lords. The name means “herb garden” and many medicinal herbs were grown to help save the Aizu people from a plague. Approximately 400 types of herbs are grown in Oyakuen today. You can enjoy drinking maccha in the garden.
・松平家墓所 Gravesite of the Aizu Clan Leaders (Matsudaira Family)
ここには、江戸時代から会津を収めた松平藩主たちのお墓が並んでいます。大名の墓地としては、日本で最も大きく趣のある墓所です。一番の見どころは、巨大なカメの形の石の上に建てられた石碑です。最近ではパワースポットとしても注目されています。
It contains the tombs of Aizu Matsudaira daimyo lords who ruled Aizu in the Edo period. The site is the largest and most impressive of daimyo burying grounds in all of Japan. The most spectacular sight is a row of gigantic stone slabs standing on enormous turtle-shaped bases. The cemetery has recently become a popular destination as a mystic power spot.

This video features Aizuwakamatsu and Ouchijuku in Fukushima.
Aizuwakamatsu is a castle town with a long samurai tradition. Highlights include Tsuruga castle and the old samurai residence, as well Mt Iimori, which is the famous burial place of the Byakkotai, a group of young samurai warriors, who committed suicide when they mistakenly believed that the castle had fallen. Sazaedo is also located there, which is an extremely rare temple completed in 1796 that features a double helix staircase on which the people going up and those going down never pass each other.
Ouchijuku is an old post town that has been restored to look as it did in the Edo Period. Even the phone and electrical wires have been buried underground to retain its authenticity.
