Lebanon hopes to revive train lines
(6 Feb 2017) LEAD IN:
Lebanese railway lines have been inactive for many years, with train carriages left to rust in the open.
Authorities and enthusiasts hope the railway lines can be revived.
STORY-LINE:
These rusted out carriages are all that remains in this Bekaa region train station that was once a stopping point on the Syria-Lebanon line.
Activists as well as Lebanon's transport authority are now trying to revive parts of the country's railway system that once made up a matrix of railroads crisscrossing the Mideast.
They say the railways are desperately needed in a tiny country that runs 150 miles along the Mediterranean coast, with most of its highways heavily congested.
In his hometown of Rayak in east Lebanon, 86 year old former train driver Asaad Namroud is in his element around trains.
I was on the Beirut route for 18 years. I used to drive from Daraa to Damascus, Beirut and Rayak, carrying 225 tonnes from Beirut on a slope, he says.
Namroud enjoys visiting the remains of the train station in his home town and boarding the remaining rusty train that he used to drive.
The train in my blood, in my heart and I will be so excited when I see a train, he says.
Nostalgic photographs of Namroud and his colleagues line the wall in the train station.
The building of Middle Eastern railways began in the late nineteenth century. Its crowning glory was the Hejaz, built toward the end of the 600 year old Ottoman Empire. It was ostensibly built to shuttle pilgrims from Damascus to the holy Muslim cities of Mecca and Medina.
Lebanon's transport authority wants to restart the line from Beirut to the town of Tabarja, 16 miles (23 kilometres) north, which experts say would relieve the capital of its worst gridlock. But there has been no agreement from Lebanon's bickering politicians about how to seek international funding for the plan.
Our first priority right now is to revive the coastal train line (Tripoli, Beirut) to solve the car traffic crisis and contribute to the economy and to make a contribution on the environmental level, says director general of the Railways and Public Transport Authority Ziad Nasr.
Lebanon currently has a major pollution problem which a revived rail system could go some way to relieve.

1001 HELMETS donation project
1001 HELMETS donation project ride with Youssef Al Khal
WingRiders Lebanon - GoldWing Lebanon and Go IV Real Events are heavily campaigning for road safety concerning motorbike riders. The “1001 HELMETS” campaign aims at raising public awareness, educating on safety measures related to motorbike riding and most importantly donating good quality helmets with internationally approved safety standards (DOT – ECE).
Why we initiated such a campaign:
after the disturbing findings collected from different sources like the Traffic Management Center (TMC), the Internal Security Forces (ISF), the Municipality of Beirut, road safety associations such as YASA.
The number of small bikes commuting in Beirut and its boundaries exceeds 30,000 motorbikes. This fact explains the escalating number of serious injuries, physical impairment, and unfortunately death. The usage of these bikes is increasing due to its small size, high mobility, ease of parking, and facility in avoid traffic jams.
This shift in transportation means by many of our citizens is not accompanied with proper safety measures especially the importance of wearing a helmet due to many reasons mainly negligence or the financial inability to buy one having other more important priorities.
Objectives
• Saving lives!!! decrease motorbike accidents related injuries, permanent disabilities or death.
• Promote safety awareness and empower young riders to implement to protect themselves and others.
• Helping the Ministry of Interior in re-activating the law which enforces wearing a helmet at all times.
Who are we collaborating with:
As this is a high national concern, many social figures and governmental officials are involed:
• Ministry of Interior
• Beirut Municipality
• Mr.Ali Hamadeh, Journalist
• Youssef El Khal, Lebanese celebrity and the Pioneer of motorbiking safety for the “1001 Helmets” campaign
• Many other distinguished figures.
1001 HELMETS campaign will be donating helmets to many groups from our Lebanese community:
• Lebanese Army
• Internal Security Forces
• Municipalities
• Lebanese Red Cross
• Civil Defense
• Other bikers who cannot afford to buy a good quality internationally certified helmet due to other life priorities
