【Byodo-in Temple】Hoshokan Museum 1
A wonderful mini museum that houses precious artifacts from the Phoenix Hall
The Byōdō-in museum stores and displays most of Byōdō-in's national treasures, including 52 wooden Bodhisattvas, the temple bell, the south end Phoenix, and other historically noteworthy items.
This museum is a part of the Byodo-in Temple complex and the general admission includes an entry to it. After seeing the Phoenix (actually Amida) Hall from the outiside, it's highly recommended to buy an additional ticket to go inside the Phoenix Hall. Observe there the murals and some Buddhist angel images on the higher walls, in addition to the large main Amida statue.
Then, visit this museum. You will have a much better understanding of the Phoenix Hall with detailed information related to what you have just seen.
The pair of golden phoenixes on top of the roof is a recent replica. In the museum you can see their originals in detail. Further, the display also gives you further details that are now completely missing.

In 1052, Byodoin Temple was built by the Regent, Fujiwara no Yorimichi by rebuilding the villa, given by his father, Michinaga. The year 1052 was said to be the beginning of a decadent age when Buddhism was thought to be dying out and pessimism due to decadence infected the minds of aristocrats and monks. Jodoshinko (belief in Jodo), which prays for peaceful death and rebirth in Gokuraku (nirvana), widely spread throughout society. In 1053, the following year, Amidado (Hoo-do (Phoenix Hall)) was completed and in the Hall, the Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Tathagata) Seated Statue at a height of 2.43m, created by Jocho, the greatest sculptor during the Heian Period, was situated and it is said that it was the most extravagant of the time. The building and statutes created about 1,000 years ago have been passed down to this day and are registered as a World Heritage Site.

Byodoin Temple, Kyoto in Cherry Blossom Season - 平等院、宇治市●京都府 - Japan As It Truly Is
After going sightseeing for a whole day in Kyoto, you might find a bunch of temples all turn into just a hazy blur. Not this place. Byodoin (平等院) has some magnificent architecture that you won't soon forget. It's in Uji, Kyoto, so it doesn't get as many tourists raging through as some other places, but it is not quiet and empty either.
The main sight is the Phoenix Hall, completed in 1053 A.D. and it is a superb and artistic creation. It is easy to see why this was one place chosen to be on Japanese currency. There are also a couple sub-temples nearby, as well as a museum (no photos allowed inside). Byodoin was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. The Phoenix Hall is still the original from its creation - one of the few buildings from its time that has survived the wars and disasters that have hit Japan over the centuries. It also represents what the people in the Heian Era envisioned what the Jodo Pure Land Paradise would look like.
Open daily 8:30 to 17:30 PM; 600 yen. 300 yen more to walk through the Byodoin Temple Phoenix Hall.

On the way to Uji, Byodoin

Today is the 5th of June and we're on the way to Uji, Byodoin with our teachers of History classes. The picture of this temple is on the 10 yen coin. It was raining from the early morning. However, it didn't effect on our mood. Furthermore, rain made our first class trip more interesting and exciting. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record the whole trip because of umbrella in my hands and we didn't have enough time to spend with camera. But, I took a lot of photographs which you can find on my VKontakte public. :)
Thank you for your attention,
Huge hugs from me.

A Thousand Years of History
In 1052, Fujiwara no Yorimichi, eldest son of
Fujiwara no Michinaga, who was Kanpaku
(the Chief Advisor to the Emperor),
the mostpowerful aristocrat at the time,
transformed a villa that Minamoto no Shigenobu,
Minister of the Left, had inherited from his wife
into a Buddhist temple called Byodoin.
The year 1052 was regarded as the first year
of the Decadent Age of the Dharma,
a dark period of moral decline before the
arrival of the future Buddha.
Both noblemen and priests were caught up
in the pessimism associated with this doctrine,
and the beliefs of Pure Land Buddhism that
hoped for a peaceful death and rebirth in
Paradise became widely popular at
all levels of society.
The completion of the Amida Hall or
the Phoenix Hall was celebrated in the
following year, 1053, and
an especially opulent Seated Statue of
Amitabha Tathagata sculpted by Jocho,
the most highly regarded master sculptor of
Buddhist images of the Heian Period,
was enshrined inside the hall.
The building, with its Buddhist images
constructed nearly 1,000 years ago,
is presented here today and is listed
as a World Heritage Site.
