Laodicea on the Lycus, Eskihisar, Denizli Province, Turkey, Asia
Laodicea on the Lycus was an ancient city built on the river Lycus. It was located in the Hellenistic regions of Caria and Lydia, which later became the Roman Province of Phrygia Pacatiana. It is now situated near the modern city of Denizli. It contained one of the Seven churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Laodicea is situated on the long spur of a hill between the narrow valleys of the small rivers Asopus and Caprus, which discharge their waters into the Lycus. The town was originally called Diospolis, City of Zeus, and afterwards Rhodas. Laodicea, the building of which is ascribed to Antiochus II Theos in 261-253 BC in honor of his wife Laodice, was probably founded on the site of the older town. It was approximately 17 kilometres west of Colossae, and 10 kilometres south of Hierapolis. It was approximately 160 kilometres east of Ephesus and, according to Strabo, it was on a major road. It was in Phrygia, although some ancient authors place Laodicea in differing provincial territories not surprising because the precise limits of these territories were both ill defined and inconstant; for example, Ptolemy and Philostratus call it a town of Caria, while Stephanus of Byzantium describes it as belonging to Lydia. At first, Laodicea was not a place of much importance, but it soon acquired a high degree of prosperity. In 220 BC, Achaeus was its king. In 188 BC, the city passed to the Kingdom of Pergamon, and after 133 BC it fell under Roman control. It suffered greatly during the Mithridatic Wars but quickly recovered under the dominion of Rome. Towards the end of the Roman Republic and under the first emperors, Laodicea, benefiting from its advantageous position on a trade route, became one of the most important and flourishing commercial cities of Asia Minor, in which large money transactions and an extensive trade in black wool were carried on. The area often suffered from earthquakes, especially from the great shock that occurred in the reign of Nero (60 AD) in which the town was completely destroyed. But the inhabitants declined imperial assistance to rebuild the city and restored it from their own means. The wealth of its inhabitants created among them a taste for the arts of the Greeks, as is manifest from its ruins, and that it contributed to the advancement of science and literature is attested by the names of the sceptics Antiochus and Theiodas, the successors of Aenesidemus and by the existence of a great medical school. Its wealthy citizens embellished Laodicea with beautiful monuments. One of the chief of these citizens, Polemon, became King of Armenian Pontus and of the coast round Trebizond. The city minted its own coins, the inscriptions of which show evidence of the worship of Zeus, Æsculapius, Apollo, and the emperors. Antiochus the Great transported 2,000 Jewish families to Phrygia from Babylonia. Many of Laodicea's inhabitants were Jews, and Cicero records that Flaccus confiscated the considerable sum of 9 kilograms (20 lb) of gold which was being sent annually to Jerusalem for the Temple. The martyrdom of Lulianos and Paphos is believed to have happened here. The Byzantine writers often mention Laodicea, especially in the time of the Comneni. In 1119, Emperor John the Beautiful and his lead military aid John Axuch captured Laodicea from the Seljuk Turks in the first major military victory of his reign. It was fortified by the emperor Manuel I Comnenus. In 1206–1230, it was ruled by Manuel Maurozomes. The city was destroyed during the invasions of the Turks and Mongols.

Hierapolis was originally intended for the treatment and recreation of diseases using hot spring water. Pamukkale is one of the three most popular attractions of Turkey on the hill below. From a distance, it looks like a snowfield in a ski resort, and a closer look at Pamukkale, like a salt hill. Pamukkale means the castle of cotton. Cotton-like white limestone and the delicate sparkling hot springs provide people with mysticism that transcends times and seasons. The hot spring water flowing into the hills is rising out of the basement and leaving lime, which has been undergoing for more than 14,000 years, creating a large scale lime hill. About 35 degrees warm hot water is used as a bleaching agent because it contains calcium and carbon dioxide. When I touched it with my hand, it is slippery like mud. There is a person who enjoys a unique hot spring bath by the hot spring water. I can see a girl who puts her face on the surface of the water and forgets the world, and leaves her body in the running water. The face of the girl seems to have washed away all the troubles and wonders of the world. But there is something that draws more attention than this girl. Every person passing by looks at it and takes pictures. It is this guy who lays comfortably in his front yard on a warm limestone hill. Although the shovel is a promising one, it seems to be better than any other dog in the world. I went back to the place where I can do the hot spring properly with the envy guy behind the world. It is a hot spring formed by hot springs sprang up on ruins damaged by an earthquake. You can enjoy a plush spa with a backrest of the Roman ruins.

The next destination is the ancient city of Hierapolis. Hierapolis, which means 'sacred city', was built around 190 BC, and it was the place where prosperity was celebrated during important events, festivals and sports events of the country during the Roman and Byzantine era. However, in 1354, it was a spectacular era. Although the earthquake has ruined many ruins, the original shape of the amphitheater remains almost unchanged. The scale, capable of accommodating a maximum of 15,000 people, highlights the city that flourished at the time. I'm surprised. It is so peaceful and quiet. Everyone is modern but still I can feel the sense of history here

Bir sonraki hedef antik Hierapolis şehridir. 'Kutsal şehir' anlamına gelen Hierapolis, MÖ 190 civarında inşa edilmiş ve Roma ve Bizans döneminde ülkenin önemli olayları, festivalleri ve spor etkinlikleri sırasında refahın kutlandığı yer olmuştur. Ancak, 1354'te muhteşem bir dönemdi. Deprem birçok kalıntıyı harap etmiş olsa da, amfi tiyatrosunun orijinal şekli neredeyse hiç değişmemiştir. En fazla 15.000 kişiyi barındırabilen ölçek, o dönemde gelişen kenti öne çıkarır. Şaşırdım. Çok huzurlu ve sessiz. Herkes modern, ama hala tarih duygusunu hissedebiliyorum ”

Pamukkale - the Cotton Castle in Denizli Türkiye - Castelul de Bumbac - 03_09_2019
PAMUKKALE - TURKEY COTTON CASTLE
The cotton mountain aspect of Pamukkale is due to the hot springs in the area. In the past there were several springs with different temperatures, which came to the surface in Hierapolis, but due to the numerous earthquakes, many disappeared or moved elsewhere. Because of the carbon dioxide, the water comes to the surface, and the calcium from the salts existing in the water forms a white poleiala on the surface, which is deposited everywhere where the water passes. It is said that this water has two properties: it washes well and fixes the color. In addition they contain a number of salts and sulfides that are beneficial for health, especially for cardiovascular, skin, rheumatic, eye and some nutritional diseases. This explains why, in the past, there were several temples that treated the sick, combining spa belts with different diets.
The Pamukkale terraces are located in the northwestern area of Turkey, about 20 kilometers from the city of Denizli and come in the form of huge white terraces that look, at first sight, on ice. The region was formed on an area of 2.5 kilometers long and 500 meters wide. The year 129 BC is the time when the Roman Empire conquered the ancient city of Hierapolis, at a stone's throw from Pamukkale. The emperors Nero and Adrian declare the area a spa resort, astonished by the miracle they encountered.
Pamukkale or Cotton Castle is 19 km north of the city of Denizli on the main road to Aydin.
Visiting the terraces of Pamukkale gives you the opportunity to discover the ancient city of Hierapolis. The ruins of the city, preserved quite well, date from the period of King Eumenes II of Pergam and from the Roman period, considered the most flourishing for Hierapolis. Today we can admire: the Theater, the Byzantine Church, the Martyrdom of St. Philip, the marble road, the temples, the Necropolis, the Byzantine Gate and the Arch of Domitian.

Demre is a town and its surrounding district in the #Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of #Turkey, named after the river Demre.
Demre is the Lycian town of #Myra, the home of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the historical man later developed into the figure of Santa Claus. The district was known as Kale until it was renamed in 2005. A substantial Christian community of Greeks lived in Demre (Myra) until the 1920s when they were forced to migrate to Greece after the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey.[4] The abandoned Greek villages in the region are a striking reminder of this exodus. Abandoned Greek houses can still be seen at Demre and the regions of Kalkan, Kaş and Kaya which is a Greek ghost town.[4] A small population of Turkish farmers moved into the region when the Greek Christians were forced to migrate to Greece.[4] The region is popular with tourists today particularly Christian pilgrims who visit the tomb of Saint Nicholas.

Turkey, Tour of The Ancient Ruins of the 7 Churches of Revelation.Oct 2014
Hierapolis was a prosperous city in the Roman province of Asia, situated above the junction of the rivers Lycus and Meander Rivers, 12 miles northwest of Colossae, 6 miles north of Laodicea and 100 miles east of Ephesus. Little is known of its early history. It may have originated as a Phrygian cult center, from which it took the name Hieropolis city of the heiron (sanctuary). The city itself is usually said to have been founded around 190 BC by king Eumenes II of Pergamum, with the official name of Hierapolis, possibly derived from Hiera, wife of King Telephos, the legendary founder of Pergamum.According to 6th century AD geographer Stephanus of Byzantium, it was called Hierapolis (holy city) because of its large number of temples. Principally a luxury resort town, it was known for its textiles.
Built on a plateau rising 150 to 300 feet above the Lycus river valley, Hierapolis was surrounded by mineral-laden hot springs famed for their healing properties, which made it a popular resort and healing center. As water from the hot springs flowed down the steep hill below the ancient city it lost carbon dioxide, leaving behind stepped layers of white limestone, from which its modern name, Pamukkale (Turkish cotton castle), is derived.

Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. The city contains hot springs and travertines, terraces of carbonate minerals left by the flowing water. It is located in Turkey's Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which has a temperate climate for most of the year.
Travertine terrace formations at Pamukkale, Turkey. May 21, 2011
The ancient Greco-Roman and Byzantine city of Hierapolis was built on top of the white castle which is in total about 2,700 metres (8,860 ft) long, 600 m (1,970 ft) wide and 160 m (525 ft) high. It can be seen from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli, 20 km away.
Tourism is and has been a major industry. People have bathed in its pools for thousands of years. As recently as the mid-20th century, hotels were built over the ruins of Heropolis, causing considerable damage. An approach road was built from the valley over the terraces, and motor bikes were allowed to go up and down the slopes. When the area was declared a World Heritage Site, the hotels were demolished and the road removed and replaced with artificial pools. Wearing shoes in the water is prohibited to protect the deposits.

Get more Tips here!
Turkey is a big country full of different cultures, wonderful people and amazing things to see. And within all the beauty, there is also a bucket load of weird hidden places that you may not have known where hiding there. So, in order to get to know the place better, we bring you these 10 Weird places hidden in Turkey.
1) Pamukkale
Located on the outskirts of an ancient city in the Denizli province, these rock formations have been formed over millennia by carbonate deposits, funnelled into unusual terraces by hot springs and streams. Some people believe that the waters have healing powers.
2) Nemrut Dagi
This eerie site, filled with ancient statues, is thought to be the ancient tombs of King Antiochus, built in the first century. The mountain, located near Adiyaman in southeastern Turkey, contains statues of King Antiochus, lions, eagles and various Greek and Armenian gods.
3) Mount Ararat
This is a dormant volcano and some scholars believe that this is the site where Noah pitched up his ark after the great flood. A 2007 expedition found seven large wooden compartments near the peak of the mountain that correspond to the way an ancient ark would have been constructed and the wood is around 4,800 years old.
4) The Trojan Horse
Most people think that Troy is as fictional as the Cyclops or the Sirens who tried to tempt Odysseus to his death. Today, you can wander around the ruins of the ancient city, climb inside a replica of the Trojan horse, and imagine the battle that sacked one of the most important cities of the ancient world.
5) Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
This tomb was built by the Greek architects for Mausolus, a satrap in the Persian Empire, and his sister-wife Artemisia II of Caria. It was 45 m (148 ft) high, and the four sides were adorned with sculptural reliefs but was destroyed by successive earthquakes. Today, you can see its ruins. This is the origin of the word mausoleum
6) Cappadocia’s cave houses
A number of Goreme residents live in dwellings carved out of the rock, or in large cave structures beneath the ground. Visitors to the area can stay in hotels hewn out of rock faces, and visit underground Byzantine churches.
7) The Temple of Artemis
Located at Ephesus, this was rebuilt twice and was described by some as the most spectacular of the ancient wonders. You can see the foundations and some ruins at the ancient city of Ephesus.
8) Mardin’s sandstone buildings
Mardin was built 4000 years ago entirely of yellow chalk stone. The houses are decorated with different motifs but on the whole are very similar, giving the whole city a slightly unreal look, like a film set. Most of the tourists get lost in its maze like streets.
9) Myra's rock tomb
In ancient times, the wealthy and important citizens of Myra were placed in tombs carved out of the hillside. These beautiful necropoli are haunting monuments to their mysterious occupants who died thousands of years ago, still watching over their ancestors.
10) Gemiler island
The island's ruined church is believed to contain St Nicholas' tomb (patron of sailors). Around 650 AD the remains were transferred to Demre, but pilgrims still visit Gemiler to pay homage to the saint who inspired the modern-day Santa Claus and visit the ruins of the ancient church

Peter Marshall's Turkey Part 12 Istanbul 3 St Saviour-in-Chora
Go to St Saviour-in-Chora, a church which became a mosque and is now a museum, like Hagia Sophia. The inside is almost totally covered by Byzantine frescoes and mosaics. I have named the subjects of as many of these as I can - so if you can name any of the others, please add a comment. NB - the nave or naos is mainly lined with marble panels. Then walk uphill to look at the Theodosian City Walls and back downhill to Mirama Sultan mosque. This was closed so have another look at the city walls further along.
