Aven Armand is a limestone cave located in the Cévennes National Park of France, in the Lozère département, between Meyrueis and Sainte-Enimie.
It was first scientifically explored by the French explorers Louis Armand and Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1897.[1][2] The cave begins as a narrow pit, descending 75 metres (246 ft) before opening up into an enormous vaulted chamber known as the Grand Salle, or Great Hall.[1]
The Grand Salle is close to 100 metres (330 ft) long and 55 metres (180 ft) wide. The floor is covered with a proliferation of fragile limestone speleothems in a variety of shapes and sizes, created by the slow dripping of water through the stone over thousands of years. Some have reached heights of close to 30 metres (98 ft).
Autumn in the Causses and the Cévennes World Heritage Site, France
The Causses and the Cévennes Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011 and is located in the southern part of central France. It incorporates parts of the Cevennes National Park and the Causses National Park. Boasting over three millennia of agro-pastoral history, this stunningly beautiful region is mountainous and interspersed by deep valleys linked by 'drailles' or drove roads, representative of the relationship between agro-pastoral systems and the biophysical environment. The Cevennes is an area of windswept mountain uplands comprised of granite and metamorphosed Precambrian schists, while the Causses is characterised by the overlying Jurassic limestone forming imposing limestone plateaux with cliffs and deep gorges.
This rugged landscape did not lend itself to the development of large towns or cities, and is still the most sparsely populated region of France, characterised by widely dispersed small farmsteads and villages, the majority of them Protestant. Mont Lozère, the highest point in the region at 1,699 metres, is one of the last places where summer transhumance is still practiced in the traditional way, utilising the drailles. The region was once renowned for the production of chestnut products and silk manufacture, and the legacy of these industries can be seen in the landscape in the form of ancient chestnut groves and mulberry bushes. The keeping of bees in log hives and the rearing of Lacaune, Manech and Basco-Béarnaise breeds of sheep are still in evidence, the sheep's' milk being used in the production of local delicacies such as Roquefort cheese.
Places that feature in this short film include the picturesque villages of Le Pont de Monvert and La Malène, the spectacular Gorges du Tarn and Mont Lozère, with its enigmatic megalithic structures, which we summited at sunset.

Wild France: With Ray Mears Part 4: Cevennes
Ray visits The Cevennes National Park, one of the most uninhabited regions in France. He travels deep into the Chestnut forest to meet Laurent, a local farmer whose family have grown chestnut trees for generations. He sets up a campfire to cook some chestnuts to make a chestnut soup. He continues his journey, meeting a local bee keeper who builds traditional hives from tree trunks before heading off to find an animal who would once have been a common to this area, the wolf. Living in the park amongst the wolves are vultures and Ray hears the story of their successful re-introduction to the area.

Pastoral Landscape of the Causses and the Cevennes - UNESCO World Heritage Site
This World Heritage Site covers the Pastoral Landscape of the Causses and the Cevennes - an interesting landscape and several natural parks in the south of France. It's an area that's traditionally been home to agro-pastoralism, where small scale farmers and drovers manage small crops, and where the land can't support large populations. Although it's a very pretty landscape, with dramatic canyons and towering terraces, we did struggle a little to find the true meaning of this site.

We took a little break on the side of the road as we drove through Cévennes National Park. Only 2nd proper flight with this thing so I didn't go very far and adventurous. Still, just have to admire the quality of the pictures.
