Movie Tickets in Korea
I recently was asked about when US (blockbuster) films are released in Korea. Most of the time we get them the same day as the US. However, because piracy is huge here in Korea, some of the bigger films are actually released early. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released on April 24th in Korea, but on May 2nd in the US. Why? Because the studio knows that as soon as it hits the screens, copies will be available on the Internet. They release the films early here in an attempt to get people to see the film in the theater rather than on an illegal download.
Speaking of movies, one thing I really do like one like about going to the movies here is the seats are all reserved. There's no lining up and trying to get the best seat in the house. You know going in, at the time of purchase, where you will be sitting. I think it is brilliant and I wish more places around the world would do it for general admission movies (I know elite theaters have this, but I'm talking about just regular theaters.)

Opera rides a trend at movie theaters in Korea

A night at the opera... For many people, it′s an experience reserved for special occasions.
But here in Seoul, the opera apparently has become more accessible for people of all ages... through a new program that′s catching on quickly.
Yim Yoonhee joins us with more on this.
The opera is usually seen as a rather formal event... and not a very family-friendly activity.
But this program is bringing opera closer to the public by screening performances from overseas in movie theaters nationwide.
Take a look.
You can always head to the local theater for a quick action film or a comedy,... but why not broaden your horizons and check out a live performance of a world-famous opera?
There′s nothing quite like the grandeur of an opera,... with the stunning stage effects and rich voices soaring through the air.
And now the splendor of the experience is available at your local movie theater.
It′s hard to get your hands on tickets for local opera performances. Plus they′re so expensive. Now you can appreciate an opera performance at your local movie theater, and the response has been great.
The performers may be thousands of miles away, but the huge screen and crystal clear HD quality makes it hard to not to feel like you′re right there with them.

I really enjoyed it. You can see world-famous opera singers for such a reasonable price. It was a great experience.
It′s a new trend that′s catching on quickly,... making the opera an experience that everyone, anywhere can enjoy.
Where can we see these productions and which ones are being offered?
Megabox, which is a major movie theater chain here in Korea, is offering quite a few productions.
These are live performances that are streamed from the various stages around the world, and some of the productions include Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and Bartok′s Bluebeard′s Castle, which is a new production by New York′s Metropolitan Opera. They′re also offering The Merry Widow and Macbeth.
Is this live streaming idea limited only to the opera?
Actually, this is a trend I′ve noticed being used to make plays more accessible to global audiences as well.
The National Theater of Korea offers quite a few plays from various production companies as part of its National Theater Live program.
These are performances that are also streamed live, this time at the National Theater here in Seoul.
They, too, have been successful, and even though the performances are being streamed, audience members have commented on how the live aspect of the performance is still felt, thousands and thousands of miles away.
This is an excellent opportunity for people to explore and try things they maybe would otherwise have avoided. Thank you for that report.

Korea Box Office: 'Roaring Currents' Tops 'Frozen,' Becomes Top 2014 Film
South Korean maritime epic Roaring Currents crossed 10.77 million admissions on Monday, overtaking Frozen (10.29 million admissions) to become the most watched film of 2014 in the country. Only a dozen films — all Korean titles except for Avatar and Frozen — have managed to draw over 10 million admissions, or roughly a fifth of the South Korean population of 50 million. The film took only 12 days to reach the milestone on Sunday, overtaking The Host 's previous record of 21 days.

Movie ticket sales exceed 200MN for 3rd straight year in S.Korea / YTN
Movie ticket sales in South Korea have exceeded 200 million for the third consecutive year.
As of yesterday (Sunday), a total of over 200.3 million tickets were sold in the country so far this year.
Experts estimate that with December being the peak season at movie theaters, this year will most likely record the highest number of box office ticket sales in the country.
