How to make Celadon Ceramic at Chiangmai Celadon
STEP 1 : Clay preparation stage selected only “din dam” or Black Clay to produce Chiang Mai Celadon. The clay is dried, ground and sift.
STEP 2: The dried clay powder is mixed with water to clean it from impurities such as iron or any others, then passed through a plug mill to press the water from the clay and made into clay slabs.
STEP 3 : After being compressed in the pug mill, the clay must be left exposed to open air for a while so that organic matters in the clay can congregate.
STEP 4: The clay is kneaded to remove air bubbles.
STEP 5: Forming Clay.
1.Cast mold.
2.Forming by “spinning jigger mold” (rotating the clay under a foaming knife).
3.Forming by hand on the wheel.
STEP 6: After Forming, the products are left to dry naturally in open air.
STEP7: Then the products are ready for decorative carving by hand and leave to dry.
STEP 8: The next step is firing in the kiln at 800 degree Celsius for 6-8 hours. Then every biscuit must be inspected for defects or cracks.
STEP 9: After inspection, the biscuit is ready to be painted.
STEP 10: Then the biscuit products are glazed by dipping into the glaze solution mixed with clay from paddy fields and wood ashes.
STEP 11: After that, leave to dry, then decorate the coating. So no air bubbles.
STEP 12: The products are ready for a second firing in the kiln at 1260 to 1300 degree Celsius for 10-12 hours. After taken out of the kilns and cool down, the cracking of Chiang Mai Celadon begins, which make the distinctive appearance of Chiang Mai Celadon.
