CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory
San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee was at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory (BCO) on sunny St Patrick's morning March 17, 2013 on his first official trip outside the USA to sister city Cork. At BCO Mayor Lee announced the launch of a new educational initiative between Cork and San Francisco, in which primary, secondary and third-level students from both cities will have access to Robotic Astronomical Telescopes in California.
This exciting programme has been spearheaded by BCO and involves a partnership with Ormondale Elementrary, Portolo Valley in the San Francisco Bay area.
Mayor Lee was accompanied by a delegation including San Francisco supervisors, industry and municipal leaders.The City Manager, CIT senior management and industry leaders from it@cork, European Tech Cluster were also present.
The announcement by Mayor Lee was recorded for Gathering the Gathering and will be sent to Space by radio transmission at the end of 2013, the year of The Gathering.
On his visit to CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory Mayor Lee also met the bright sparks at Coderdojo BCO who are mentored by research postgrads at CIT BCO.
The team presented Mayor Lee with a 3D model of Blackrock Castle Observatory which they coded and printed themselves using the latest 3D print technology.
Blackrock Castle Observatory 10th Anniversary
We’re celebrating 10 years as an award-winning science and discovery centre in Ireland. Since 2007 over 1 million people across all ages have engaged with our BCO team on explorations of contemporary science and technology through the theme of astronomy and space.

With TARA students can 'Look up and Learn' by remotely accessing a telescope in California. TARA will stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in thousands of students in Ireland and California by giving them access to a live robotic telescope in California.
