Here's the painstaking, 2-week process that goes into making masks for the Carnival of Venice
Business Insider UK visited three different workshops to see how the masks are made for the world famous Carnival of Venice.
The traditional masks are made in papier maché and are decorated with things like gold leaf, feathers, or gems.
The Carnival of Venice began in the 12th century, it bloomed during the Renaissance period but was disbanded during the late 18th century.
The festival was restored in 1979 and has grown in popularity since then.
Watch the video to see how the masks are made.
Special thanks to workshops La Bottega dei Mascareri, Magie di Carnevale, and Ca' Macana.

11. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Mario Belloni, Shop Owner, Ca' Macana artisan mask shop in Venice, trying on mask (partly overlaid with previous shot)
And what did they wear, mostly? They wore this Which was called 'Bauta.' Now pay attention, the first document mentioning the Bauta dates back to the 13th century. The Bauta was a hood, you see And it was made mainly of this part that would make you completely unrecognizable, if you used your mask The mask was called 'Volto' (Italian for 'Face') and allowed you to drink and eat without taking it off You see? A hat kept everything together. In the 1700s it was usually a 'Tricorno' (Italian for Cocked Hat). Men and women showed up in public this way, completely in incognito, and they were free to do whatever they liked - mind that this happened for over six months a year.

14. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) tourist from Bologna who bought masks for her children (name not available)
There is a big Carnival tradition here in Venice, so you can't leave Venice without buying that kind of product, especially if it is artisanal and not made in China
15. Close set up shot of a German tourist trying on a golden, long-nosed mask
16. SOUNDBITE (German), Vanessa Wendel, tourist from Nuremberg:
I really like wearing these masks, it feels so elegant. It makes me think about the movie Eyes Wide Shut where people go to this elegant ball, wearing elegant clothes and these masks. It just feels great wearing them. Some of them are a bit strange because they cover up all of your face and it's difficult to breathe, but it's a great feeling.
17. Close shot of a young woman trying on a mask in front of the mirror
18. SOUNDBITE: (Portugese) Tamara Barreto, tourist from Rio de Janeiro:
Basically, the masks (that we use at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival) look the same as here in Venice. We copy the masks from here when we use masks, so they look like these ones.

4. Close-up sign with golden mask above shop entrance
5. Close-up of hand-made red and gold mask at entrance
6. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Carlos Brassesco, Ca' Macana owner:
The mask for the theatre is mainly made with leather, as you can see. These masks are made with a wooden mould and wet leather manipulated with a hammer. These types of masks are made just for the theatre, because they are more flexible. They last for a lifetime. The more you use it, the more they adapt to your face. They have a different grip, you can really perform with it, in a stronger way than by using the papier mache masks. The mask made with papier mache is the Carnival mask. It requires a faster processing technique, it's more simple. It is a more popular mask.
7. Various of Carlos' wife, Carolina Vincente, decorating mask with gold leaf
8. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Carlos Brassesco, Ca' Macana owner:
In the beginning, it was really an interest kind of thing thing, and also because there was the deep historical research required. There was the interest in knowing all the characters of the Commedia: from Arlecchino, Zanni, Pulcinella, Brighella to minor characters.
9. Male customer trying on a devil mask
10. Female customer trying on orange coloured mask
11. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Carlos Brassesco, Ca' Macana owner:
Then ceramic masks from Bassano started entering this trade. And then came plastic masks from China and then from Albania, so our job suffered.
12. Pull out from pink mask to Carolina working on mask
13. Pan from close-up of mask to customers talking with Carolina
14. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Carlos Brassesco, Ca' Macana owner:
We have been asking for a special label for twenty years. We asked also - speaking seriously - for a museum. I don't understand why there isn't an historical museum of Venetian masks in Venice. If you go to Brussels, there is the European museum of Carnival, where a big part is dedicated to the Venetian Carnival.

16. Wide exterior shop, tourist taking picture
STORYLINE:
The annual Carnival of Venice is the highlight of the famous Italian city's calendar and is an occasion perhaps best symbolised by the famous Venetian mask.
The city's Mascareri - or mask-makers - say, however, that the trade is under threat from foreign competition.
Every year the city's Carnival traditions have steadily drawn thousands of tourists.
Last year's celebrations saw a record 250-thousand visitors during the last weekend of the festival.
Such tourist trade has provided a welcome and steady flow of income to the city's economy.
But the very symbol of this festival, colourful masks made by local artisans, is under threat from foreign competition and lack of protection from the local authority, according to critics.
Mascareri, as the original Venetian mask makers were called, have been practising their trade since 1436.
Nowadays in Venice there are a variety of mask shops, but only a few can really be called mask-makers.
One of these is Ca' Macana atelier in the Cannaregio district, where Carlos Brassesco and his wife Carolina Vincente have been producing masks for over 20 years.
In their shop, where work is performed in a studio open to the public, hundreds of masks are on display.
Some are especially made for Carnival and some, in the style of Commedia dell'Arte, the Italian comic tradition dating to the 16th century - are used in theatre.
The relatively cheap price of foreign-made masks makes the situation increasingly worse, the couple said.

Venice - carnival - masks
they are linked, and local mask makers, the Mascareri, have had a place at the heart of things for hundreds of years.
Carlos Brassesco says traditional carnival masks are made of paper mache, but he and his wife Carolina use leather to make others at his Ca' Macana workshop...
SOT
Carnival brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city every year, but Brassesco says local mask makers are getting a diminishing share of the trade, in part because of cheap foreign competition...
SOT
Brassesco says the Mascareri have failed to get special designation for their dominos.
But a local official says Venice is pushing to get a UNESCO heritage label for them, as well as other local handicrafts - Murano glass and Burano lace.

Venice with Kids 2018
Wondering what to do in Venice with kids? Our kids absolutely love Venice. This was their second time back, so we tried some new activities and repeated some of our favorites....feeding the birds in St. Marks Square, painting masks at Ca'Macana, shopping at the Rialto Market, a gondola ride through the canals, eating pizza, gelato and cannoli....Last time we took the traghetto to Lido Beach and visited the islands of Murano and Burano as well. We love to stay in the Dorsoduro district because it's a bit away from the crowds. Join us as we wander through Venice and enjoy this unique city with our kids and our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Fletcher.

The making of a Carnival Mask at Ca del Sol in Venice

Venice Original Photo Walk and Tour to discover the real Venice of the Venetians
EUROOO Carnevale Venezia
The Carnival of Venice ,or in Italian: Carnevale di Venezia, is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy.
The Carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter, on Shrove Tuesday , the day before Ash Wednesday.
The festival is world famous for its elaborate masks.
In the popular Culture Venetian masks feature prominently in the films Eyes Wide Shut and Marco Bellocchio's The Witches' Sabbath. Stores that supplied the masks include both Ca' Macana[16] and Il Canovaccio[17] in Venice.
Carnevale is depicted in the 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II. The main character, Ezio Auditore, is assisted by the artist Leonardo da Vinci in hunting down and assassinating the corrupt Doge of Venice during Carnevale; a golden mask, which Ezio must obtain to enter a private party held by the Doge, plays a significant role in this part of the game. Carnevale is also depicted in the 2005 video game Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. The first episode of the game is set during the 2001 Carnevale, and large enemies wear masks.
Cà Macana - Best workshop of traditional venetian masks
The job of creating one of Venice's most recognizable products - whether for use in the famous Carnival of Venice, the Commedia dell'arte or simply as masquerade masks - is an impressive one. In our workshop we draw on a synergy of techniques and approaches from ancient arts and crafts with no limits placed on artistic ingenuity. We combine sculpture, painting, and decorative techniques to achieve a level of craftsmanship with our Venetian masks that truly qualifies them as art.
Ca' Macana is known throughout the world for the outstanding quality of its masks and for its innovation. Classic masks such as the bauta and the moretta are faithfully reproduced from authentic paintings and illustrations by Pietro Longhi and Francesco Guardi along with drawings by Giovanni Grevembroch. Fine Venetian carnival masks, such as the harlequin (l'Arlechinno) and the colombina, create the most complete collection of Commedia dell’Arte masks you will find in any workshop in Venice.
