PANJIM MAYOR MEETS WITH RAMPONKARS
There was a time when the Ramponkars of Goa spoke in one voice, a voice that echoed across Goa, to the far reaches of the national capital. But, that voice is no more. And with that, the fight of the Ramponkars, the traditional fishermen, has lost a lot of its mettle. Local Ramponkars of the Caranzalem-Dona Paula area met with Panjim Mayor Surandra Furtado to voice their grievances and problems regarding wholesale fish vendors denying and fining small fish vendors from buying fish from them. Furtado said he was shocked to know that this activity was taking place in the market. He said that he would hear the other side of the story from the wholesalers, and if found guilty would see to it that they were arrested.
Dona paula beach in Goa
Dona Paula is a former village and tourist destination in the suburbs of Panaji, Goa, India. It is home to some of the top Industrialists of the state, Goa University, the International Centre Goa and the National Institute of Oceanography. Being one of the hottest tourist spot in Goa there are several hotels, small and large, and the luxury Cidade de Goa is situated in the area. Dona Paula Beach in Goa
Dona Paula is a former village, and tourist destination, in the suburbs of Panaji, Goa, India.[1] It is today home to the National Institute of Oceanography, and just alongside it lie the Goa University and the International Centre Goa.
The place is named after Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior, a historical figure in Portuguese India. She was the daughter of the Portuguese Viceroy of Jaffnapatnam, in Sri Lanka. She and her family arrived in Goa in 1644 and she married a Fidalgo from Spain in 1656. Her husband was Dom Antonio Souto Maior. They were an extremely affluent family, and the entire property from the present day Cabo Raj Nivas all the way to Caranzalem belonged to the Souto Maiors. She died on December 16, 1682.
Dona Paula was a woman of charity and is known to have helped the villagers and worked a lot for their betterment, so after her death, the villagers decided to rename the village as Dona Paula. Initially the village was called Oddavell.[2]
The Dona Paula Beach is also a major tourist attraction. According to a local myth, Dona Paula entombed in the Cabo Chapel, the residence of the Governor of Goa and is supposed to be seen emerging from the moonlit waves wearing only a pearl necklace. Several tourists as well as locals guided by this myth visit the beach for a glimpse of Dona Paula. The Cabo Raj Bhavan is situated at a scenic spot of Dona Paula. GOA DURING MONSOONS
Goa, India's number one beach tourist destination is frequented by visitors only during the winter or summer by domestic tourists. However, Goa tourism industry is all set to sell raindrops to visitors, who usually flock this beach destination for its sun, sand and surf and stay away during monsoons. The state-run Goa Tourism Development Corporation has launched several new attractions to morph Goa into a 365 day tourist destination. Lets take a look at Dona Paula and see how monsoon tourism is prevailing in the state.
Dona Paula located on the beautiful and famous sea stretch that spans from Panjim, Miramar and Dona Paula is a very famous area frequented by tourists. During the tourist season Dona Paula transforms into a crowded stretch which is otherwise a calm beautiful place during monsoons. The idyllic rocky tourist attraction lies at the spot where the Mandovi and the Zuari river meet and confluences with the Arabian Sea at a distance of 1 Km from this point.
The place is named after Paula Amaral Antonio de Souto Maior, a historical figure in Portuguese India. She was the daughter of the Portuguese Viceroy of Jaffnapatnam, in Sri Lanka. One of the most curious attractions in Dona Paula is a whitewashed statue perched on the rocks near the popular ferry jetty. Sculpted in 1969 by Baroness Yrse Von Leistner, there are different versions to its purpose of origin. According to Goa Tourism Board's website, it is named Image of India and depicts the figures of Mother India and Young India, one looking to the East and the other to the West. The Wheel of Ashoka is in the middle half, buried in stone, to represent the ancient culture, that nurtured this blend of ideas and emotions. While in the book 'Walking in Goa' published by Heta Pandit, it is said that the Baroness had actually sculpted statues of philosopher Robert Knox and his wife because she admired him.

DJI Osmo Mobile 4K | Aguada Fort | Dona Paula Goa
Fort Aguada and its lighthouse is a well-preserved seventeenth-century Portuguese fort standing in Goa, India, on Sinquerim Beach, overlooking the Arabian Sea.
The fort was constructed in 1612 to guard against the Dutch and the Marathas. It was a reference point for the vessels coming from Europe at that time. This old Portuguese fort stands on the beach south of Candolim, at the shore of the Mandovi River. It was initially tasked with defense of shipping and the nearby Bardez sub district.
A freshwater spring within the fort provided water supply to the ships that used to stop by. This is how the fort got its name: Aguada, meaning Water. Crews of passing ships would often visit to replenish their fresh water stores. On the fort stands a four-storey Portuguese lighthouse, erected in 1864 and the oldest of its kind in Asia. Built in 1612, it was once the grandstand of 79 cannons. It has the capacity of storing 2,376,000 gallons of water, one of the biggest freshwater storages of the time in whole of Asia. This fort is divided in two segments: the upper part acted as fort and watering station, while the lower part served as a safe berth for Portuguese ships. Whereas the upper part has a moat, underground water storage chamber, gunpowder room, light house and bastions, it also has a secret escape passage to use during time of war and emergency. The lighthouse at initial stage is used to emit light once in 7 minutes. In 1834 it was changed to emit light creating eclipse every 30 seconds, however it was abandoned in 1976.
