FRENCH GUIANA: FIGHT TO PRESERVE CULTURE OF UNIQUE COMMUNITY
French/Nat
The fight is on to preserve the culture of a unique community in South America.
They're refugees from Laos who fled southeast Asia in the 1970s - aided by the French government.
Since then they've been living in a jungle village in French Guiana - largely isolated from the outside world.
Deep inside the South American jungle, there's a scene straight out of south-east Asia.
This is the village of Cacao in French Guiana - created in 1977 as a home for refugees from Laos.
The houses are made of wood and rest on stilts, in the traditional Laotian style.
Mothers cook noodles in the open air as children play nearby.
Old women sell their wares in the marketplace.
More than eight hundred people live in Cacao, and they keep themselves to themselves.
They continue to speak their native language, and there's little French influence to be seen - except for the gendarmerie (police station) on the outskirts of the village.
But community leaders fear Cacao may be losing its Asian heritage:

Over the past few years we've begun to lose our culture and traditions. But we're preserving really important traditions like the way we mark births, marriages and deaths.

Another key element in the battle to preserve Cacao's Laotian roots is to maintain the look of the village:
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We're trying to preserve certain aspects of Asia such as Asian-style wooden houses, and Asian-looking gardens.

Children play in the brook which flows through Cacao.
The village is a haven of peace and security - a far cry from the nightmarish past from which many of the refugees fled.
But some people here still feel their true home is Laos, not South America - and say they'd like to return one day.
Sister Elise is a Vietnamese nun who works with the residents of Cacao - she says older people, in particular, do have mixed feelings about their identity:
SOUNDBITE: (French)
There's nostalgia. They don't have nightmares about their past. The older people would like to go back. For them it's quite hard.

But the reality is that few, if any, of the residents of Cacao will return to their native land.
Their future is here - an Asian village in part of South America that's run by the French.
