Fly Fishing Poudre River Fort Collins Colorado
Hello everyone,
I’m still new to fly fishing and am just beginning to build my collection of flies. I have been researching and asking other fisherman which flies to use. Today I have a selection of flies for spring nymphing in the Poudre Canyon, and my goal is to catch fish on all three patterns. It is a fly fishing slam challenge!
The patterns I am using are:
Pat’s Rubber Leg’s #12
Flashback Beadhead Hare’s Ear #16
RS2 nymph/emerger #20
I some brown trout and rainbow trout with all of these fly patterns! You can also use these videos as a basic guide to matching the hatch for the Poudre rive in Colorado for Spring 2018.
I suggest that other beginner fly fishermen build their fly collection slowly, make sure you know what each fly is and which insects it is meant to mimic. I want to catch fish on each new fly I buy, so I am taking my time.
It is overwhelming to walk into a fly store and see all the options, but I am methodically working through basic fly patterns and I will continue to post these videos as I catch fish on different fly patterns!
Thanks,
C.J.

Cache La Poudre-North Park Scenic and Historic Byway Near Fort Collins Colorado
The Cache La Poudre-North Park Scenic Byway leads visitors from the city of Fort Collins to the quiet, bowl-shaped valley of North Park, located just west of the Continental Divide.
The Cache La Poudre River Canyon and the Roosevelt National Forest characterize the eastern section of the byway, while the North Park valley dominates the western section. North Park was once a favorite bison grazing ground, and today deer, antelope, elk, moose, beaver, and coyote populate the area. There are all types of wildlife to be seen on the byway, and migrating waterfowl flock to the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge.
Recreation along the byway is high on visitors' lists. The Poudre River, Colorado's only federally designated National Wild and Scenic River, is a popular spot for whitewater boaters and anglers.
The Cache La Poudre-North Park Scenic Byway was once a useful transit corridor for Native Americans and early white explorers. Today, the byway is a destination spot for travelers looking for beautiful scenery, solitude, diverse landscape, and recreational opportunities.

Fort Collins Colorado NEW Whitewater Park Tour!
Checking it out 9.19.19
First time I’ve seen this new park open. Greenwashing and gentrification define this new shiny park in FoCo. Surprise! The Coy Ditch headgate REMAINS, although as yet unmarked. I hear there will be plaque. :-/ This headgate is the site where John and Emily Coy’s hand dug ditch diverted from the Poudre to irrigate their pioneer farm, over at the new Woodward HQ.
Here's the update with a big FAVOR from (Xcel) putting a lot of water into the River to show off this darling, GREENWASHING project.
My visit to the Park Opening Weekend 10.12.19:
$adoan article:
Funded and surrounded by land owned by the new FoCo elite, this pleasant new public space along the Poudre River will be a charming view from a $1mil condo or executive office space! Whitewater sports? Not so much, unless that wacko Glade Reservoir (Northern Water) plan to send a bit of water to placate the masses and keep the over-appropriated Poudre River from running dry most of the year, goes through.
Documenting the flow in the Poudre on this day, correlated with the flows in the Hansen Canal (approx 10-15 cu ft/sec) to do some rough figuring on what Northern plans to put back into the Poudre. So here's about 1/2 the flow that NISP plans say will create a Better River once Northern Water and it's participants have drained the remaining Spring flows into their new boondoogle, I mean, reservoirs.
Contrast with the 10.12.19 opening day MARKETING ploy - 367 cu ft/sec in the Hansen Canal dumped into the Poudre.

Frozen River (Cache La Poudre River) - In A Colorado Minute (Week 304)
- - A frozen river, with its clear water breaking through the white ice, all of it glistening in the sunshine, is a special perk of Colorado winters. Only 15 minutes north-west of Fort Collins, the Poudre Canyon offers stunning views of the Cache la Poudre River cutting through the hills and mountains and flowing underneath and around the ice. During the sunny Colorado winters, it's not difficult to find the perfect day to enjoy the visual drama between water and ice, sunshine and shadow, steep rock walls, big boulders and small pebbles. You can get so taken in by the views that you might not even notice at first that you're actually walking on the river - or on the thinning layer of ice separating you and the gushing water right below your feet.
Needless to say, I went out to the Poudre Canyon a few times this winter already and captured these images of the frozen river for you during several outings with Miriam or Scott and always Whiskey. The video shows a collection of some of my favorite places along the canyon: Diamond Beach (my own naming), Grey Rock Trail Bridge, Diamond Rock, and that place we went with Erica, you know the one, where the road crosses the river (I really need to come up with a new name for that one).
By the way, the water in the river is very low right now, typical for winter. It's going to be above most of the boulders again once the snow melt happens up in the high mountains. I just sincerely hope that it won't become so much to lead to flooding again like the last few years...
The song in the video is “Second Nature” by Jason Shaw of He has made this and many great tunes available via a CC BY 3.0 license. Thank you, Jason!

My First (EVER) River Fly Fishing Trout! Poudre River Fort Collins Colorado
Hello everyone,
I have never caught a trout in a river with a fly rod. That changes NOW.
I am not very good a fly fishing, but I have caught many bluegill and a few trout out of lakes. But fly fishing for trout in a river has eluded me for a long time. Recently I have been watching a lot of tutorial videos on youtube and I think I am getting better at fly fishing.
I went to the Cache la Poudre River near Fort Collins Colorado and gave it my all until I finally caught a nice rainbow trout! I hope this encourages people to get out there and start fly fishing!
Comment below any tips or questions you have about fly fishing.
Thanks,
C.J.

I just happened to stumble across this small but REALLY NICE area just north of Fort Collins, CO. It's just outside the town of Bellevue. I was trying to find a spot to photograph around Horsetooth Lake but I didn't have a park pass and didn't want to chance it with the park rangers. SO I kept going north and I saw the big ridge I ended up photographing. The top of the ridge is about 450-500 Feet above the river below. I took two days to film. Day 1 was fairly windy and I was on the wrong side of the lake. So all my distance views of the Butte (not really...isn't flat enough at the top and needs to be more table top in it's look but it's close) are from the west side of the lake. Day 2 was much nicer and a little earlier in the morning. I'm waiting for a really nice day so I can film it at sunset. When all the colors in the rock will pop! Anyway...I hope you enjoy. Give me thumbs up if you will please. And Subscribe if you like what you see. I will be posting more soon.
OH....and the DJI Zenmuse H3-2D. I haven't decided if it's an issue with the information coming from the Naza or if the servo is getting weak. It act's more like it's a firmware issue. I've really backed off on my gains and started to fly less aggressively. It appears to happen mostly when I'm in forward flight. It's worked flawlessly for the first few months. Probably 20-30 flights. But now it fails like this on almost every flight. I bought the unit from Helipal and they are trying to assist me. Kudo's to Helipal. I'll let you all know if we come up with a solution. I've been looking at the DYS 3 Axis Gimbal. Although I'm not all that excited at buying another gimbal, but if I have to it most likely will not be a DJI product. And I'm open to any suggestions. Any recommendations???
