Educating people about rare cacti

Cacti are among the most threatened groups assessed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
For one cactus farmer in Spain, educating people about rare species of cacti is just one way to help curb the growing illegal trade in rare plants, as well as the impact of climate change.
STORYLINE:
Southern Spain's Almeria Province is home to some of Europe's most arid and unusual landscapes, some of which became the unforgettable settings of film-maker Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns and their iconic scores by Ennio Morricone.
Near the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve where all kinds of plants are preserved, lays the Cactus Nijar Tree Farm, a world of its own with cacti of all shapes and sizes, on display on the side of a steep hill.
It is the home, and passion of cactus lover extraordinaire, Anton Brugger.
He says that there is a revival of interest in cacti and similar plants. They can grow in a number of different areas in Europe, provided they are given the conditions they need.
Although Brugger does sell cacti, his main work is educating people about cacti by offering regular guided tours.
Participants learn about the different species of cactus, and how to best take care of each of them
And they can see the plants when they're fully grown, which often prompts them to purchase their younger, smaller versions and grow them in their homes.
Although widely viewed as virtually indestructible, widespread problems are threatening the cactus.
Here in the Cabo-de-Gato National Park, Andalucia's largest coastal protected area with some of Europe's most unusual geological features, the most common cactus in the region has been blighted by disease.
The reason is a cochineal infestation that destroys the Cactus opuntia, or Prickly Pear as it's commonly known, for which no cure for has been found so far.
At the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew in London, which holds one of the world's most important collection of cactus species, the plants in the green houses are all healthy specimens.
But, according to Paul Rees, Kew's Tropical Nursery Supervisor, cacti are officially under threat with almost one third critically endangered or vulnerable.
It is not without reason that these symbols of the desert are gradually losing ground. Not only is there illegal smuggling of the rarer species, but increases in the temperature are having an impact on these plants, even if they are used to hot, dry temperatures.
If temperatures keep getting warmer they migrate higher and higher until they can't migrate any more. So a lot of alpine habitats tend to be under threat, says Rees.
The dryer habitats become - or the less water - the harder it becomes for these plants to survive which are already surviving in extreme conditions already.
While there are approximately two thousand known and identified cactus species, new and rare species are found from time to time in remote parts of the world.
When a new cactus is identified, the experts and Kew make sure they protect them from possible illegal uprooting.
We're very careful about giving information out about really rare and endangered species, says Alex Monro, Kew Gardens' Research Leader in the Americas Team. If you look on our website, you'll see that for cacti you won't get any geographical information as to where those specimens have come from.
Keeping even the most widespread species of cactus alive and healthy takes care and attention.

'Unearthed' live at Cactus Níjar, Mix Amylo, Bernard Gregor-Smith
Book presentation for 'six months backwards', accompanied again by cellist Bernard Gregor-Smith. We played three pieces from 'the hunter of small happinesses', and this new(ish) song, 'unearthed'. This song is a cover version, but with added lyrics, of a haunting track by 'F'. The book presentation took place in Cactus Níjar, in the Almeria region of Spain, a great venue for concerts and exhibitions set in an impressive cactus garden. From the keyboard, I could see the mountains of Cabo de Gata; just beyond them lies Las Negras. My performance is wobbly, but real.
Thanks to Nigel Bradder for the video.
