Walking the Lawley Ridge in the Stretton Hills near Church Stretton
We have just had some beautiful Spring Weather and I decided to take full advantage and go for a walk that I've promising to do for months. I drove up to the North end of the Lawley and walked a loop which ended in going up and over the ridge. The light was fantastic and it was so peaceful (apart from the dozen Mountain bikers!). Had a great evening and will definitely be returning.

Hope Bowdler walk was about 5.25 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was mostly good field and hill paths, some tracks, a little road walking and some trackless ground. The walking was a on a variety of slopes and some level ground with two steep ascents and one steep descent. Route finding was mostly easy with obvious paths and good waymarking and good landmarks. There were 5 stiles to negotiate.

Hiking Caer Caradoc

Hill Walking - Caer Caradoc, Shropshire, England.
A walk up a hill when it's very windy.
Caer Caradoc (Welsh - Caer Caradog) is a hill in the English county of Shropshire. It overlooks the town of Church Stretton and the village of All Stretton and offers panoramic views to the north towards The Wrekin, east to Wenlock Edge, and west over the nearby Long Mynd. On a clear day it is possible to see the hills of north-east Wales to the north, the high-rise buildings of Birmingham to the east, Worcester Beacon in the Malvern Hills to the south-east, and Hay Bluff in the Black Mountains, Wales and the peaks of the Brecon Beacons, to the south. Caer Caradoc is hill G/WB-006 in Summits on the Air. This Caer Caradoc is not to be confused with that 1 km to the west of Chapel Lawn village near Bucknell, Shropshire.
Caer Caradoc rises sharply and steeply up out of the narrow valley in which the town of Church Stretton is situated, known as the Stretton Gap. It is the highest point on a high, narrow, northeast–southwest whaleback ridge, sometimes called a hogsback ridge. The Wrekin is a very similarly shaped hill and on the same alignment, some 10 miles (16 km) to the north-east. Caer Caradoc may be fairly easily climbed from Church Stretton town but the ascent/descent is steep; a more gentle climb is from the village of Cardington, which lies two miles (3 km) to the east. A good way of climbing Caer Caradoc is to do a linear walk from along the aforementioned ridge, including the nearby summits of Ragleth Hill and The Lawley to gain the best perspective on each [1]. Otherwise, the ascent of the hill and return is some 7 miles (11 km) from the town.
The hill is volcanic in origin, like the Wrekin etc., formed of narrow ridges of resistant Pre-Cambrian rock, thrust upwards by movements deep down along the Church Stretton fault. This fault runs from Staffordshire to South Wales and can be seen on OS maps as a line of springs on this hill.
Caer Caradoc cave, near the summit
The summit is crowned by an Ancient British Iron Age or late Bronze Age hill fort. It is this which the hill is named after - Caer Caradog in Welsh meaning Caradog's fort. Local legend has it that this was the site of the last stand of Caractacus against the Roman legions during the Roman conquest of Britain, and that after the battle he hid in the cave near its summit. Others say his last stand was in the locality but that this was one of his fortresses.
SHROPSHIRE HILLS Caer Caradoc
Caer Caradoc is found some 10 miles south of Shrewsbury and in close proximity of Church Stretton. For those travelling south on the A49 it has a dominating position in the landscape. The area is very popular with ramblers
The summit is crowned by an Ancient British Iron Age or late Bronze Age hill fort. At the summit there is a 360 degree vista of all the hills for miles around to be seen. its summit is at 1,506 feet and it apparently rates as a 'Marilyn'!!! (something to do with its prominence I believe - see link below)
I would think it perhaps best (or easiest) ascended from near Willstone in the east. There is a not too difficult route to the top via a zig-zagging path. Alternatively, you could head towards Little Caradoc Hill and ascend from there. It's quite a bit stiffer but you can at least admire the views northwards as you regain your breath!
MUSIC IS BY ALYTH McCORMACK, SONG THE LAMBS ON THE GREEN HILLS

Support the Bald Explorer here:
Church Stretton is a small town in Shropshire, England, 13 miles south of Shrewsbury and 15 miles north of Ludlow. The town was nicknamed Little Switzerland in the late-Victorian and Edwardian period because of its landscape and became a health resort. The local geology includes some of the oldest rocks in England and a notable fault is named after the town. Today, Church Stretton is a busy market town in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Harriet, Lola and I, take a stroll through the town on a cold February morning.

Walks in England: Exploring Caer Caradoc in Shropshire
Today Harriet has joined me to walk up the wonderful Caer Caradoc hill in Shropshire. We are extremely fortunate to have beautiful weather. It is rumoured to to be where King Caraadoc held his last stand against the Romans in AD50. We search for the iron age hill fort on the summit and the cave that Caradoc is supposedly to have taken refuge in.
We also find a geocache!

Caer Caradoc - Shropshire Hill Walks 8/127 Highest Shropshire Hills AONB
My personal favorite Shropshire Hill, Caer Caradoc is 559.5 m in height. I wish it was the highest... but it's not. Rugged, rocky (in places) and full of character. It even has a (small) cave and overlooks many other neighboring hills and also the pretty town of Church Stretton. And nearby , in the village of Cardington, is a truly lovely little pub... 'The Royal Oak'. If you haven't been there, you MUST. Stephen, the Landlord, is a gentle giant who knows how to look after his beer and serves excellent food too! Watch out for his fluffy cat.

A walk up Caer Caradoc from Church Stretton, mostly filmed from the air with a DJI Phantom 3. It was a rather gusty day so difficult to get to many smooth shots, but the little drone copes very well.

Church Stretton HF Holiday in the scenic Shropshire Hills
My wife, Naoko Motohiro, and I booked a 4-day break with HF Holidays at Longmynd House from June 24th-28th 2019 in Church Stretton, a town that is surrounded by the Shropshire hills. We were made to feel most welcome right from the start. We had booked for self-guided walks, and we also brought our electric bikes. On our arrival day we walked up Longmynd to the highest point, Pole Bank, which was a walk of 10 miles. On our second day we cycled a loop of 42 miles, around to Clun, and on to Stokesay – to see the castles. On our third day we walked almost 13 miles, taking in 3 hills including Caer Caradoc. On our final day we walked up the hill that could be seen clearly from Longmynd House – Ragleth Hill.
I had never heard about the Shropshire Hills till a few weeks, and now I would recommend any walkers to visit there.
To conclude: the food was delicious; the staff were very friendly & helpful; the guides were excellent; all of the other guests were easy to get on with.
Inwood Valley, Long Mynd, Church Stretton - Aerial Video
Just north of Church Stretton, Shropshire, is Inwood valley set in the Long Mynd hill. As most attention goes to the nearby Carding Mill Valley, Inwood is a beautifully quiet spot with wildlife-rich heathland, views across the Shropshire hills and a small stream.
Hike in church stretton, failed wild camp
14.5 mile hike around church stretton, weather got bad up caer caradoc where we planned to stay and the ground was just soaking wet, so we bailed and went back to the car. All in all an excellent hike and loved every part of the walk
