Cafe Tortoni first opened its doors in 1858, and it was named after a Parisian cafe by the same name.
The place gained great notoriety in the mid-1920s when it was frequented by a mix of writers, painters, musicians, poets, journalists, philosophers, inventors, and other creative minds.
Today it's a must-visit cafe for visitors passing through Buenos Aires.
Where are we? Well for today's meal we are at Café Tortoni. Which is one of the oldest and most famous cafeterias in the whole city. I think locals would probably tell you this is very touristy, because it is only tourists with their cameras sitting in here, but regardless it is a place I think you should visit. Like the architecture is really cool. The furniture is kind of like frozen in time. And also they make a pretty good hot chocolate. That's what I've got right here. I ordered chocolate con churros. Let me use this other hand. Let me use my strong hand...hahaha
That is a big thing of coffee. Is that cream beside it too? Yeah and I got frothy milk on the side. But look at how thick that is. There is like some chocolate chunks in there.
And I ordered that with churros. Which is kind of like a long strip of dough that has been deep-fried. Yeah, it is kind of like a deep-fried Spanish doughnut. Yeah, and it has granulated sugar sprinkled on top. And they've put a lot in here. And of course, you have to dip it in the chocolate. It has to be done. It is the only way to go. That is my lunch today guys. Hot chocolate. Healthy.
Mmmmm. That is good. I almost wish you could use this as a straw to drink the hot chocolate.
But this is actually one of their specialties here. They have two specialties of the house. One is called leche merangada which we've ordered. But this is really good. I can see why it is one of the suggested dishes. So yeah, look at that. Look at how is soaks up the chocolate. It is like a sponge inside. Like a thick sponge. Mmmm.
And I've gone for the tostada. And that is basically a sandwich that has tomato, ham and cheese. And it is like a grilled cheese sandwich. Yeah, but this is premium because of the ham. Yeah, so it is usually just ham and cheese but this one is called tostada Tortoni just because they've added the tomato.
So we also ordered something called leche merengada because it is one of their other specialties here. But from the description I thought it was going to be milk that tastes like meringue. But that looks like ice cream. Yeah, it does. It looks like there is cinnamon sprinkled over it. Ooh.
So it should taste like meringue unless they've mixed up our order. And we wouldn't know.
Yeah, it is kind of like ice cream. Is it meringue flavored ice cream? Yeah, it is. Okay, and the cool thing is that there is so much cinnamon put on top. And I mean I love cinnamon. I can smell it from here. From across the table.
And that came with a little wafer. I'm going to get another bite with my spoon.
So yeah it is a pretty cool place to stop for a little snack. I can see why that is the house specialty. I'm guessing that is homemade. Definitely tastes homemade.
Okay, so we've polished everything off. Yes, except for the milk because we don't want to dilute our chocolate. And here is the bill.
It came to 299 and that included the chocolate churros, the balon which is the beer, the merengada which is the ice cream and tostada tortoni which of course was the sandwich. So that is a little bit pricey. Touristy prices here. But you know what still not that bad. That is like $20 US dollars for four items on the menu. Yeah, and you're paying for the ambiance. Yes, you are.

El Café Tortoni, ubicado en el 825 de la Avenida de Mayo, en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Su nombre casi sin dudas procede del que fuera a fines del siglo XIX el célebre Café Tortoni de París. Durante casi un siglo el Café Tortoni porteño-argentino es el más representativo del espíritu tradicional de la dicha avenida de Mayo, y es ya una leyenda de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. En tal café funcionó la peña literaria de mayor predicamento de Buenos Aires, liderada por el pintor Benito Quinquela Martín.1
En la actualidad sigue siendo un lugar de difusión cultural y turístico por excelencia.
Se sabe que fue inaugurado en 1858, pero existen dos versiones respecto del porqué de su nombre: una de ellas dice que un inmigrante francés de apellido Touan lo estableció en la esquina de Rivadavia y Esmeralda, nombrándolo Tortoni dado que así se llamaba un establecimiento del Boulevard des Italiens donde se reunía la elite de la cultura parisina del siglo XIX. Es llamativo que el escritor francés Stendhal menciona en su novela Rojo y Negro, de 1830, la existencia de un café Tortoni en París.2 La otra versión afirma que fue un tal Oreste Tortoni quien habría establecido el café sobre la calle Defensa al 200. Uno de los últimos dueños del Tortoni, el señor Fanego, está a favor de la primera versión y afirma que la segunda nació de un error en un artículo aparecido en un folleto publicitario de uno de los proveedores, en el que se nombraba al tal Oreste Tortoni. Sin embargo Enrique Puccia, historiador de Buenos Aires, descubrió que efectivamente existió una guía de la ciudad donde aparece el Café Tortoni en Defensa al 200. No obstante, el Gran Mapa Mercantil de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, editado en 1870 por Rodolfo Kratzenstein, lo ubica en Rivadavia y Esmeralda con Monsieur Touan como propietario.1

Lo cierto es que en 1880 fue trasladado a su lugar actual: la planta baja de la residencia de Saturnino Unzué en la calle Rivadavia. Era una casa de estilo italianizante, con planta baja y la vivienda en el piso superior, y su fachada se conserva en la actualidad, muy deteriorada. El fondo de la construcción era lindero con el Templo Escocés de Buenos Aires, ubicado sobre la calle Piedras y construido hacia 1830.1
En 1882, el intendente Torcuato de Alvear concibió el proyecto de construcción de un gran boulevard al estilo de los creados por el Barón Haussmann en París. La futura vía recibió el nombre de Avenida de Mayo en 1885, y su apertura comenzó en 1888, avanzando entre las calles Rivadavia y Victoria (hoy Hipólito Yrigoyen) y demoliendo las antiguas construcciones que se encontraban en su camino, entre ellas el Templo Escocés.
La casa de la familia Unzué fue afectada por la creación de la avenida y perdió el fondo de su terreno aunque, en vez de demolerse completamente, se la conservó y se le construyó una nueva y más lujosa fachada con salida hacia la nueva vía. La nueva parte de la residencia, proyectada por el arquitecto noruego Alejandro Christophersen en estilo academicista francés, terminó de construirse en 1898 y cuenta con planta baja y dos pisos. La vieja entrada del café por la calle Rivadavia siguió existiendo como puerta trasera de acceso al sector de billar. En la actualidad se encuentra cerrada de forma permanente.

l Tortoni es el paradigma del café porteño, pero poco se sabe de sus orígenes. Apenas un inmigrante francés de apellido Touan decidió inaugurarlo a fines de 1858, el nombre lo tomó prestado del de un establecimiento del Boulevard des Italiens, en el que se reunía la elite de la cultura parisina del siglo XIX.
A fines del siglo, el bar fue adquirido por otro francés: don Celestino Curutchet, a quien el poeta Allende Iragorri describiera como ...el típico viejito sabio francés.... Menudo de cuerpo y fuerte de espíritu, estilaba la clásica perilla alargada, ojos vivísimos y usaba un casquete árabe de seda negra, casi un personaje de historieta que agregaba otro acento peculiar a la fisonomía el lugar.
El local era frecuentado por un grupo de pintores, escritores, periodistas y músicos que formaban la Agrupación de Gente de Artes y Letras, liderada por Benito Quinquela Martin. En mayo de 1926 forman La Peña, y le piden a Don Celestino Curutchet, que les deje usar la bodega del subsuelo. El dueño acepta encantado, porque según sus palabras ... los artistas gastan poco, pero le dan lustre y fama al café....
En este café parece que el tiempo se hubiera detenido como en un daguerrotipo, cuando en él la gente juega al billar, a las cartas, o simplemente toman un café entre amigos, el local es cada vez más una parte indispensable de la historia porteña.

Cafe Tortoni, it is probably the most favorite cafe in Buenos Aires. Located just steps away from Plaza Le Mancia, it is popular with tourists and coperanians. Cafe Tortoni was found in 1858 and named after a famous cafe in France, if you look carefully. Many of the tables in the cafe have plucks that are dedicated to famous writers that actually wrote on those tables.
I am Roberto Fanego, Manager of Cafe Tortoni. I have been here half a century. I lived the history of this Cafe. The works of art that part of the Cafe's history were all gifts from the writers and painters.
Cafe Tortoni was popular with intellectuals, politician and tango singers. This is Nobel price winning author Balkin Borges, then we have famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel and an Argentinian poet called Alfonsina Storni.
We have a photo of Borges speaking here and you can see me there listening. I still had hair back then. I enjoyed the company of the poets, musicians, and writers. I got to hear them speak.
Right now, I am in what used to be the barber shop of the cafe. Now, it is a museum. The walls are covered with art work and photographs relating the history of the cafe. At night Cafe Tortoni holds jazz and tango shows at the small theater at the back of the cafe. In the past famous tango Ochesteras played in that balcony. Here we have some hot chocolate made with a bar of real chocolate and the churros, which are an Argentinian delicacy, it is a pastry. If the hot chocolate was not enough for you, do not forget the chocolate cake.
Here is an interesting fact, the first legislative session held in Buenos Aires, was here in Cafe Tortoni in nineteen ninety seven. So, here we have a traditional Argentinian plate, it is called picada and it is full of olives, cheese, salami, ham, pickles and the cherries and it comes with cider or beer. Right now I have a cider, which is a great other option instead of beer. You could find this in any Argentinian restaurant but it is usually not so beautifully designed.
