Cahir Castle - county Tipperary - Ireland
Cahir Castle (Irish: Caisleán na Cathrach), one of the largest castles in Ireland, is sited on an island in the river Suir. It was built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, Prince of Thomond. Now situated in Cahir town centre, South Tipperary the castle is well preserved and has guided tour and audiovisual shows in multiple languages.
In 1375, the castle was granted to James Butler, newly-created Earl of Ormond, for his loyalty to Edward III. His son James, the second Earl (by his second marriage) passed the lands around the barony of Iffa and Offa West to his children, though they were not themselves noble. This changed by 1542 when the first of the Barons Cahir was created. Unlike their staunchly Anglican kinsmen, this branch of the Butler dynasty sided with the Roman Catholic Irish in the Elizabethan wars. In 1599 the castle was captured after a three day siege by the army of the Earl of Essex and was for a year put under the charge of Sir Charles Blount. Lord Cahir joined with the Earl of Tyrone in 1601 and was attainted for treason, but later obtained a full pardon. In 1627 the Castle was the scene of a celebrated killing when Cahir's son-in-law, Lord Dunboyne, murdered a distant cousin James Prendergast, in a dispute over an inheritance.
During the Irish Confederate Wars the castle was besieged twice. In 1647 George Mathew, the guardian of the young Lord Cahir, surrendered to Murrough O'Brien, 6th Baron Inchiquin (later 1st Earl, and a descendant of Cahir's builder) following his victory at the battle of Knocknanauss. In 1650 he surrendered again to Oliver Cromwell, during his conquest of Ireland without a shot even being fired.
In 1961 the last Lord Cahir died and the castle reverted to the Irish state.

The former stronghold of the Butler family, Cahir Castle is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved medieval castles. This castle evolved from an earthwork known as a motte and bailey to the mighty castle we see today and it has withstood many attacks and sieges. It remained an important residence right up to the 19th century and today it stands overlooking the River Suir and the market town of Cahir in South Tipperary. Our audio guide will describe the history and architecture of this fine castle, placing the listener back in the turbulent medieval period.

Nenagh Castle - County Tipperary - Ireland
This fine Norman Keep was built c1200 by Theobald Walter, 1st Baron Butler and completed by his son Theobald le Botiller c1220. The circular keep is over thirty metres high, and has a base of sixteen metres and is one of the finest of its kind in Ireland. The crown of mock crenellations and ring of clerestory windows were added at the instigation of Bishop Michael Flannery in 1861. The intention was that the keep would become the Bell tower of a Pugin-designed cathedral which was never built. Though not true to historic character these additions have ensured the iconic status of the keep which ensures that it features on the logos of many local clubs and businesses including Nenagh Town Council. The Castle and grounds were extensive renovated between 2009 and 2013. This project is aimed to position the castle as the main tourist attraction in the area. It is now open to the public

The History of Cahir
The rocky islet in the River Suir, where Cahir Castle now stands, was recognised from very early times as a natural vantage point. The ancient Book of Lecan records the destruction of a fort on it in the third century and Brian Boru (926 to 1014) is said to have had one of his residences here.
Cahir Castle dates from the 13th century, with 15th century additions. It is a splendid structure that has been fully restored and is the largest of its period in Ireland. It has a massive keep, high enclosing walls, spacious courtyards and a hall. A guide service is available throughout the year.
Begun in the 13th century by the Worcester or de Bermingham families, the castle came into the hands of the Anglo-Norman Butlers in 1375. The Butlers of Cahir sided with the Irish in the Elizabethan Wars, and in 1599 Elizabeth the First's deputy, the Earl of Essex, took the castle after a 3-day siege—the first successful one in which the walls were breached by the English artillery. There is a fine model and an exhibition in the castle detailing the history of these dramatic days.
John Boorman's Excalibur
Excalibur was filmed in Irish locations in County Wicklow, County Tipperary, and County Kerry. The early critical battle scene around a castle, in which Arthur is made a knight by Uryens, while kneeling in a moat, was filmed in Cahir Castle, in Cahir County Tipperary, Ireland, one of the best-preserved surviving Norman castles. The castle's moat is the River Suir which flows around it. The fight with Lancelot was filmed at Powerscourt Estate's waterfall.
According to Boorman, the love scene between Lancelot and Guenevere in the forest was filmed on a very cold night, but Nicholas Clay and Cherie Lunghi did the scene in the nude anyway.
