Lampedusa is the largest island of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The comune of Lampedusa e Linosa is part of the Sicilian province of Agrigento which also includes the smaller islands of Linosa and Lampione. It is the southernmost part of Italy and Italy's southernmost island. Tunisia, which is about 113 kilometres (70 miles) away, is the closest landfall to the islands. Sicily is farther at 205 kilometres (127 miles), whilst the island nation of Malta is 176 kilometres (109 miles) to the east.
Lampedusa has an area of 20.2 square kilometres (7.8 sq mi) and a population of about 6,000 people. Its main industries are fishing, agriculture, and tourism. A ferry service links the island with Porto Empedocle, near Agrigento, Sicily. There are also year-round flights from Lampedusa Airport to Palermo and Catania on the Sicilian mainland. In the summer, there are additional services to Rome and Milan, besides many other seasonal links with the Italian mainland. Since the early 2000s, the island has become a primary European entry point for migrants, mainly coming from Africa. In 2013, Rabbit Beach, located in the southern part of the island, was voted the world's best beach by travel site TripAdvisor.
The name Lampedusa derives from the ancient Greek name of the island, Λοπαδούσσα or Λαπαδούσσα (Lopadoússa/Lapadoússa). It has been suggested that the name derives from the word λέπας (lépas), which means 'rock', due to the rocky landscape of the island; this word was also used by the Greeks for a kind of oyster and the island may have been called like this due to the abundance of this kind of oyster. Other scholars believe that the name derives from λαμπάς (lampás), which means 'torch', because of the lights which were placed on the island for the sailors.
Historically, Lampedusa was a landing place and a maritime base for the ancient Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Berbers. The Romans established a plant for the production of the prized fish sauce known as garum. In 812 (or 813), directed by the Aghlabids, the island was sacked by Saracens during the ongoing Arab–Byzantine wars.
Lampedusa is the southernmost point of the Republic of Italy. It is also Italy's southernmost island. Politically and administratively, Lampedusa is part of Italy, but geologically it belongs to Africa since the sea between the two is no deeper than 120 metres. Lampedusa is a semi-arid island, dominated by a garigue landscape, with maquis shrubland in the west. It has no sources of water other than irregular rainfall. Overall the island has two slopes, from west to east, and from north to south of the island. The south-western side is dominated by deep gorges, while the southeastern part is dominated by shallow valleys and sandy beaches. The entire northern coast is dominated by cliffs: gently sloping cliffs on the east coast, and vertical sheer cliffs on the west coast.
The island’s northern and western coast is rather high and inaccessibile, while its eastern and southeastern shores boast magnificent, sandy beaches. From the smallest and most hidden to the largest and most crowded, Lampedusa's beaches are numerous and welcoming.
First off, the splendid coves of Cala Pisana and Cala Uccello open onto the glistening sea, while the Calas Spugna and Maluk lie on the island’s east. Cala Greca, rather, is quite minuscule and covered in whiter-than-white sand; and one of the secrets on this island is Cala Galera, accessible by passing through the island's characteristic low, rocky gullies on the water. See the beach on the so-called Dead Sea, where the water is super calm, and the same-named Grotto; also remarkable are the spectacular and buzzing Cala Francese and the famous Guitgia Beach, the beach with the nearest hotels and accessible with public transport. From here you can also reach Cala Croce and the beach on Cala Madonna, along with Porto N’Tone, a tiny beach with fine, white sand, ideal for families with children. On the island’s southern side, Cala Pulcino and countless nearby grottoes can be found.

The island of the Rabbits is an Italian island belonging to the archipelago of the Pelagie islands , in Sicily. The islet, just 4.4 hectares, is located within a bay chosen by TripAdvisor users , as part of the Travelers' Choice Awards , the most beautiful beach in the world in 2013, in Europe and in Italy in 2014 and 2015. The island is very close to the coast, so much so that it has rarely been joined to it through an extemporaneous sandy isthmus of 30 meters in length. This is a rare event (the last time in 2008), due to the wave and low tide, but it is normally possible to stop in that area of the bay without ever plunging completely into the water, since the depth varies from 30 to 150 cm.
In the first nautical map found, dated 1824 and written by Captain Smith, the area is called Rabit Island, referring to the isthmus that connects the islet to the coast: rabit in Arabic means in fact connecting, connecting . Or very likely a typographical error the word rabbit (rabbit) was printed with only one b. With good probability in subsequent maps this toponym has been improperly reported and then translated from English ( rabbit = rabbit) instead of Arabic. According to others, the name derives from a colony of rabbits installed on the island during one of the recurring formations of the sandy isthmus. The colony would then be extinct with the disappearance of the land connection.
The entire bay of the Isola dei Conigli is part of the Lampedusa Island nature reserve and is therefore heavily protected. It can be accessed only during the day, from 08:30 to 19:30, in order to safeguard the nesting of sea turtles (which usually happens at night, in fact). Since 1995 the entire area is entrusted to the management of Legambiente which every year activates the volunteer camps to select the staff that will supervise the beach during the summer season.
The islet is low, with a maximum height of 26 meters, and completely rocky. The flora and fauna are very similar to those of the North African coast; the beach adjacent to the islet is one of the few areas where Caretta caretta turtles lay their eggs. It is also an important stopping point for migratory birds that make it stop in April and September and the only area (besides in the African areas from which it comes) in which lives a particular species of lizard, the Psammodromus algirus.
Shortly before arriving on the beach of the Isola dei Conigli, right in the heart of the bay and almost hidden in a valley, you come across what was the villa of Domenico Modugno in Lampedusa, of which he was madly in love so spend his last moments of life . It was he who coined the term Pool of God , referring to the crystalline sea that bathes this place.
