The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. The Cabrera Archipelago is administratively grouped with Majorca (in the municipality of Palma). The anthem of Majorca is La Balanguera.
Like the other Balearic Islands of Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain; it was used by 23.1 million passengers in 2014.
The name derives from Latin insula maior, larger island; later Maiorica, the larger one in comparison to Minorca, the smaller one.
Topography
Majorca is the largest island of Spain by area and second most populated (after Tenerife in the Canary Islands).
Majorca has two mountainous regions, the Serra de Tramuntana and Serres de Llevant. Each are about 70 km (43 mi) in length and occupy the north-western and eastern parts of the island respectively.

Cala Mitjana, Mallorca
Cala Mitjana is beautifully located at the end of a narrow, 250-metre-long bay.
The beach is only 20-25 metres long, but it is covered with very fine-grained sand. The water is crystal-clear and the beach has very shallow water. Due to the location of the beach, waves are very rare.
There are almost no facilities at the beach apart from a beach bar. Cars can be parked nearby at Cala Sa Nau, from which there is a 20-minute walk.
The beach is rarely crowded, but in July and August there are quite many visitors.

Traumbuchten auf Mallorca. Urlaub auf Mallorca. Die Cala SAlmunia im Winter.
Samstag, der 31. Januar 2015. Nachmittag.
Noch knappe einhundert Meter bis zur Klippe nahe Cala Llombards (Mallorca - Balearen). Sturm, Sonne.

Cala Torta Beach, North-East Mallorca
A undeveloped hidden cove in the north east of Mallorca.
An idyllic bay situated between Cala Mesquida Beach and Cala Mitjana on the north east coast of Mallorca.
This beach attracts a good mix of locals and tourists and can get busy during the peak holiday weeks but most of the time you will find that this relatively hidden cove is quieter than most north coast beaches. It's rather tricky access means that it is not suitable for some people and others possibly can't be bothered with the walk on a hot summer day!
Directions
Signposted on the road from Artà to Capdepera. Look for the turning after 9km. You have to drive down a rough track, then leave the car and walk through the dunes.

Cala Formentor Beach, North Mallorca
A wonderful strip of sandy beach in the north west of Majorca
Cala Formentor is one of the most beautiful spots on the island and as a result, is very popular. It's situated in the north west of Majorca, on the Bay of Pollenca and is a Blue Flag beach.
With a stunning backdrop of pine forest and views to the mountains, it is easy to understand the attraction. The turquoise blue sea is crystal clear and the beach is made from very fine white sand. It does stretch for around 850 metres so you may be able to find a spot to spread out. Trees overhang the beach so there is plenty of shade in the hot summer months.
There is a public bus service and a car park (€5 parking fee), or a more relaxing way to get there is to take a boat from Port de Pollenca. The bay is also popular with private boats thanks to the beautiful surroundings and excellent anchoring conditions.
You can read more about the beach at Formentor in our Beach Review or about the time we took a Boat Trip from Port Pollensa to Formentor Beach.
The nearest resort to Cala Formentor is Port de Pollenca.
