Hiking La Caldera de Taburiente National Park - La Palma Island 2020
One of the most stunning hikes on La Palma. La Caldera de Taburiente National Park - hiking the volcano crater, which has been colonised with pine trees and island life. Breathtaking, gorgeous and a little difficult to truly capture the majesty of this place. I hope this video helps to inspire you to hike and get out into nature to inspire your soul.
If you want to make it a little easier you can take a taxi to cut out the most challenging upward part of the hike.
I hope that you enjoy this little adventure with me.

The national park Caldera de Taburiente is situated in the centre of the island. You can look into the caldera from above when you drive to Los Muchachos at 2400 meters high (mind you there are many hairpins).
From El Paso you can drive into the caldera and walk around (obtain a permission at the visitors centre first).

Cumbrecita Forest Walk La Palma Canary Islands [4k] - Sony RX100 V
A walk at Cumbrecita to a great viewpoint. The Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente is in a bowl formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. The bowl is 8km wide, carpeted with thick Canary pine forest and surrounded on all sides by imposing rock walls. The forest walk takes us to the Mirador de la Cumbrecita viewpoint. It juts out over the caldera, offering a great place to take in the beauty and enormity of the park.

The first part of a documentary about The Caldera de Taburiente National Park in La Palma, Canary Islands from the excellent series Nuestros parques nacionales: Red de vida (2004) - Spanish language version.

Caldera de Taburiente National Park is a rugged area on La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. It's named for the Caldera de Taburiente, a massive volcanic crater, surrounded by high peaks. The landscape is covered in Canary Island pine forest and cut by waterfalls. The summit of Roque de los Muchachos is home to an observatory. Trails start at Mirador de Los Brecitos viewpoint and Barranco de Las Angustias gorge.
Caldera de Taburiente National Park (Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente) is large geological feature on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. It contains the enormous expanse of the Caldera de Taburiente which dominates the northern part of the island, and was designated as a national park in 1954. The telescopes of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory are situated very close to the summit.
The caldera is about 10 km across, and in places the walls tower 2000 m over the caldera floor. The highest point is the Roque de los Muchachos on the northern wall, at 2426 m altitude, which can be reached by road. The Cumbrecita is at a lower point in the south-eastern part of the caldera's rim, giving a good view into the Caldera. In the south-west the caldera opens to the sea, through a riverbed known as Barranco de las Augustias. The Cumbre Nueva is a ridge that starts at the caldera and continues to the south. The main flora of the national park comprises a large forest of Canary Island Pine, with important population of the endangered Canary Islands Juniper also present.
Once believed to be a huge crater, science in the early 1800s it was to be a mountain arch with a curious crater shape. In 1815 the great German geologist Christian Leopold von Buch visited the Canary Islands, during which he visited the island of Tenerife where he was taken to the Caldera de las Cañadas. He visited La Palma after he had been to Tenerife, and in his journal he makes it clear that he was able to distinguish between a caldera of volcanic origin and the erosional origins for the caldera Taburiente. Following his return to Germany he published his journal and he introduced the term Caldera to the geological vocabulary.

La Palma harbours in its interior a replica of itself. A mirror image turned to the south west, which reproduces the island’s mould inversely. It looks as if some diabolical creature has dug it out with a blow of its claws, leaving behind a scar with jagged stitching. In its bowels, sheltered by cyclopean walls, the auaritas took refuge. La Palma’s nature shows its wildest and most inaccessible facet there.
Enter the National Park, and contemplate its jagged cliffs and pine forests as you go down into its centre. Listen to the shouts and squeals of people taking a dip in the stream. Feel how all your muscles relax in the water, after the hard hike. Descend the ravine, taking time to admire the capricious rock forms. Imagine the geological processes involved, and the park’s human history

La Palma landscape
La Palma also San Miguel de La Palma, is the most north-westerly island of the Canary Islands, Spain. La Palma has an area of 708 square kilometres (273 sq mi) making it the fifth largest of the seven main Canary Islands. The total population at the start of 2018 was 81,863,[2] of which 15,674 lived in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma and about 20,171 in Los Llanos de Aridane. La Palma has sister city status with El Dorado Hills, California. Its highest mountain is the Roque de los Muchachos, at 2,423 metres (7,949 ft), being second among the peaks of the Canaries only to the peaks of the Teide massif on Tenerife.
In 1815, the German geologist Leopold von Buch visited the Canary Islands. It was as a result of his visit to Tenerife, where he visited the Las Cañadas caldera, and then later to La Palma, where he visited the Taburiente caldera, that the Spanish word for cauldron or large cooking pot – caldera – was introduced into the geological vocabulary. In the center of the island is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park; one of four national parks in the Canary Islands.
