Gravel Biking the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail in King George, VA
In March 2019 the team at Gravel Travel & Dirt took off to the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail in King George, VA.
It’s safe to say that over here at Gravel Travel & Dirt we love a good rail trail.
And when that trail is natural surface it’s all the better.
Natural surface trails tend to have a character and history that is all their own.
The Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail in King George, VA first came on my radar several years ago.
In March 2019 the gravel travel & dirt team paid a visit to the trail system to see what it was all about.
We were not disappointed.
In its infancy, the was managed by a group of dedicated, hard-working volunteers with a vision for something great.
The Friends of the DRHT have been striving to build a free public outdoor recreation area that did not revolve around cars for more than 12 years.
Their vision? To have this 15.7 mile tree-lined abandoned rail bed trail become a part of the Caledon State Park.
The railroad line was built by the federal government during World War II to serve a United States Navy base in Dahlgren and after changing hands several times was abandoned.
When it was initially opened in 2006 it was privately held and required a permit to use.
In October 2018 the trail became a part of King George county’s park system while still being privately held.
This removed the requirement for permitted use.
The trail wanders through the woods and the surface varies from smoother hard packed dirt to some loose gravel and even offers some seriously wet areas that are all passable.
The trail passes through a lot of wet, swampy land offering an awesome connection to this natural area.
There is even a primitive campsite midway along the trail for those seeking a little more adventure.
Parking is limited so make sure to check their website at friendsofdrht.org for more timely details and a trail map.
Services are very limited so make sure to pack plenty of water and some snacks.

Rivers where you can still find gold
There's still gold in these hills
The gold rushes of the 19th century have long since ended, but there are still plenty of places you can hunt for the precious metal using a shovel, pan, metal detector and more. In fact, recreational gold mining is a pastime these days for many people, and for good reason: the largest nugget ever found in California was discovered by an amateur. Here are some key locations worldwide that you can still prospect for the yellow metal – you never know, you may get lucky and strike it rich.

police called in King George because dad says hello to children.
King George Virginia Sunday morning Father comes to say hello to Children whom he has not seen since about March. A brave daughter comes outside to say hello to father. Older son almost came to say hello but grandmother makes son come back in the house and he's 15 years old and he goes back in the house. Youngest daughter didn't know I was there and didn't get a chance to see her. Police said that they heard that sometimes they let me see them and sometimes they don't. It's quite silly and we missed the opportunity to go swimming with them here and that's it. Father alienation Survivor.

George Washington's Royal Gift
Part 4 of the George's Farm Animals Series
Mule Historian Deb Kidwell was an enormous help to us and kindly shared some of her extensive research on Royal Gift from her upcoming book. She helped us with preparing the script, navigating the many myths surrounding Royal Gift, and finding images to feature.
Thank you to Tim and Melissa Branning for allowing us to film their donkey, J.J., Katie Erhler, for letting us film her miniature donkey, the Al Kaly Shrine for the footage of their mules, and Shari Conley for helping us with filming.
Finally, thank you again to Mount Vernon for letting us film all of their beautiful animals and letting us have George's home setting as the backdrop for our narration.

The History Of Historic Annapolis
Sir Francis designed a city worthy of a Queen. Instead of using a customary grid, he constructed a baroque plan similar to the magnificent capitals of Europe. He drew circles with radiating streets to create focal points and give importance to certain structures. In one circle is St Anne's, the Episcopal Church, regarded as the spiritual center of the city. As the Church of England, it was originally supported by taxpayers.
In the other circle, rising over the harbor, is the State House, the seat of government. This urban design was admired by frequent visitor George Washington, who later had Pierre L'Enfant incorporate it into the nation's capital.
A thriving shipping industry brought great wealth to Annapolis, reflected quality of life. Prosperous merchants and planters sought to duplicate the amenities of their homeland in the colonies, and built mansions that would rival any in England. These homes, which entertained many of our Founding Fathers, had ballrooms and formal gardens where lavish social functions occurred.
Today, Annapolis has more of these original 18th century structures standing than any other city in the United States. Many are open to the public, where, their beauty and architectural style is a major attraction. Historic Annapolis Foundation operates the William Paca house as a museum, and also has a wealth of information about many of the other historical treasures.
Annapolis has great historical significance for other reasons. The capital of Maryland was the country's capital when the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War, was signed here. All four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence had impressive homes in Annapolis, which still stand today.
As delightful as Annapolis is by water, its very human scale makes it a wonderful subject for a walking tour. Many of these attractions, including the Naval Academy and St. John's College, are right in the Historic District. Best of all, the Visitors Center, with its adjoining garage, is also located right at the entrance to town. A pleasant stroll along tree lined streets will take you to museums, restaurants and some wonderful shops.
