Prince George, Canada set to host 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships
World Para Nordic Skiing, Cross Country Canada and the Canadian Paralympic Committee are pleased to announce that the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club in Prince George, British Columbia, has been chosen as the host site for the 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships.
Approximately 140 athletes from over 20 countries will travel to Prince George to compete in Para cross-country skiing and biathlon events.
The event will mark the first World Championship held in the city of Prince George. In 2015, the city successfully hosted the 2015 Canada Winter Games, the country’s largest domestic multisport event. Now, it is set to welcome the world.
“The first-ever World Championship in Prince George – I like the way that sounds,” said Lyn Hall, Mayor of Prince George. “Thank you to World Para Nordic Skiing for recognising that Prince George is a special place with world-class venues, world-class volunteers, and world-class experiences for athletes. We look forward to welcoming you in February 2019.”
“Less than a year after the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, the 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships in Prince George will be a fantastic opportunity to expose Canadians to world class competition,” added Karen O’Neill, CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “Fans can expect to see many established stars from PyeongChang, as well as new athletes with great potential, competing in Prince George in 2019.”
Canada has a rich history in Para Nordic skiing. Brian McKeever has won 13 Paralympic medals in three Games, including 10 gold, the most ever by a Canadian winter Paralympian. His brother and original guide, Robin, is now a national coach in the sport.
Added Erica Hummel, CEO of Tourism Prince George: “We are thrilled that this high profile event is coming to Prince George, creating further recognition that we are succeeding in building a reputation as a world-class sport hosting destination. We’re looking forward to showcasing our northern city and creating the warm hosting atmosphere we’re known for here in Prince George.”
The local Nordic skiing community has been working towards an event like this for many years.
“This is a terrific milestone for our club and we surely wouldn’t be making an exciting announcement like this one today without our members and amazing volunteers,” said Kevin Pettersen, Chair of the Local Organising Committee. “Hosting this World Championship in 2019 is a natural progression from hosting the Canada Winter Games and the facility improvements we made at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club. I’m tremendously honoured to be leading the Organising Committee for the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships and can’t wait to make it happen!”

I HEART OTWAY
A video that was filmed and produced (by Mick Harper) to capture the passion that people feel for this amazing place.
The Otway Nordic Centre is owned and operated by the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club in Prince George, British Columbia. With approximately 1900 members, we are the largest Nordic club in Canada. Our facilities include nearly 50km of groomed Nordic trails, a full 30 lane biathlon range (to IBU standards), FIS homologated xc ski courses. In addition to our Nordic trails, we also have over 50 km of single track trails that are used both in the summer (i.e. mountain biking, trail running, hiking) and in the winter for snowshoeing. We are also the official venue for the 2015 Canada Winter Games for Nordic sports (xc skiing, biathlon and Para Nordic xc skiing).
Western Ski Championship Coming Next Year
Another big sporting event is heading to Prince George and the Caledonia Nordic Ski club in less than a year. Mark it on your calendars, February 14 to the 16th, the Haywood Nor-Am Western Canadian Cross Country Ski Championship will be hosted in Prince George. The event is sanctioned by the International Ski Federation. Back in 2005 Otway was the site of the Canadian championships and six of the seven current national team members competed in town. The Westerns will be another test for the 2015 Canada Winter Games and will be exactly one year out from the biggest sports event to ever be hosted in Prince George.
Otway Cross Country Ski
The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club managed to do something they haven't done in 20 years. They captured the provincial club championship on their own trails this weekend. It was also a chance for some PG skiers to try and get closer to another big event coming up in a couple years.
Nordic Centre Ski Club Open House
More snow is falling in Prince George today which is more good news for those at the Otway Nordic Ski Centre. Over the weekend the Caledonia Nordic ski club held an open house for anyone that wanted to give their sport a try. They went into the weekend with a thousand members and came out with around 1200. All of their programs are about to kick into high gear. This year there are a few new places to hit the trails

On the 4th attempt, i got a clear run back down without being slowed behind motor vehicles.
Nice quiet roads up there away from most traffic, cycled down over to Miworth one day, and cycling along the greenway from UNBC to Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is a nice run
5 Lynx in our backyard. Prince George, BC
Our Dog Kaiser had been a little excited all morning. We noticed 1 lynx in the backyard chasing a rabbit. I went walking in the back with Kaiser and found some tracks in the snow. After I came back inside, a few minutes later Chelan noticed a couple lynx outside. That's when I started filming. I believe when I went for a walk I was within 50 yards of all 5 but I didn't see any of them at the time. I believe it to be a mom and 4 kittens.

Target Shooters Set Sights On Last Medals
Some athletes got their last shot at competing in the Canada Winter Games Thursday. A number of target shooters competed, including the finalists for the female air pistol competition. Target shooting wasn't picked up for the next Games in Red Deer, so there was added incentive for people to medal during the Prince George Games. I'm going to be a gold medal champion for a long time. The last gold medal champion, says Krista Hildebrand of Winkler, Manitoba. She won the individual female air pistol competition. Shooting Federation of Canada officials say not taking part in the Red Deer Games is disappointing, especially considering recent advancements in the sport. It's becoming more spectator friendly, as technology progresses. A presentation screen gave fans and officials an up-close look. We are going to go back to the drawing board and we're actually going to vie for a sport as a core sport, rather than an optional sport, says Susan Verdier, Technical Director of the Shooting Federation of Canada.
