Norwalk residents can expect to see more of this in the coming months.
Walking for the sake of walking is really not a good use of resources, says Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik.
Kulhawik says Norwalk officers will be spending more time out of their cars and on their feet.
We'll be targeting [crime] hot spots and conducting random patrols for 15 to 30 minutes at a time, he says.
Kulhawik says having more visible police work is twofold. One, it's already been effective. Kulhawik says officers have made several warrant arrests as a result of the on-foot patrols.
And it's personal.
One of the complaints you hear a lot from the public is they don't really know the officers, they just see them drive by, Kulhawik says. This is a way to get the police out more into the community.
Kulhawik says the law-abiding people have supported the change.
I've gotten only emails and phone calls with positive comments from the community, he says.
Those people who are not interested in obeying the law and aren't interested in the police being aroundthey don't like police on foot.
Kulhawik also says new officers will start off walking their beats to get to know the city.

Over 200 Norwalk Student Art Pieces on Display in Norwalk City Hall
Watch more and discuss:
Norwalk City Hall is showcasing 230 student drawings and paintings this week in its community room.
You get a kid in the arts, you have a kid who's focused on doing really fascinating work, said art teacher Shelia Wolfe.
The annual city-wide art show will display the works of Norwalk students from preschool through high school until Thursday.
Out of all the artworks here today, 12 of the pieces were selected to go on exhibition upstairs in City Hall on the third floor, said Brenda Williams, director of communications for Norwalk public schools. And they'll be added to the Sloan gallery of art that we have framed and mounted in the hallways up in the Norwalk public schools and the Board of Ed floor in city hall.
One teacher from each public school in Norwalk selected 8-10 pieces to showcase in the community room. Teachers say student artwork has been displayed at City Hall since the early 90's. This year's popular works included celebrity portraits and local landscapes.
I think it's really unique that kids are choosing to paint and draw things about their own life or things that they are fascinated by whether it be the outside scenes they saw this year with all the snow or whether it be their favorite celebrity, said Shelia Wolfe, Brian McMahon High School art department chair.
The first time we got assigned to this, our teacher Shelia Wolfe said we're going to do a monochrome type of painting, said Brien McMahon High School sophomore Matthew Lereboars. I chose James Dean. I was going to do tryptic 50's icons, so I started with James Dean and now I'm doing Elizabeth Taylor.
The one over there is a portrait of my cousins and that was when we went to Outer Banks, North Carolina and that's my concentration for AP this year, said Brien McMahon High School senior Lindsay Chirona. Basically that I wanted to capture how much fun I had with my family and we all enjoy time with each other.
In addition to the pieces that will be mounted at city hall the Norwalk Housing Authority will also select pieces to go into its annual distributed calendar.
I've always liked art, it's just a lot of fun, said Brien McMahon sophomore Catherine Petropoulos. It was one of the things I was pretty good at when I was younger so I just stuck with it.
The works will be displayed on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Norwalk is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 85,603, making Norwalk sixth in population in Connecticut, and third in Fairfield County.[1] The city is part of the New York metropolitan area.
The name Norwalk, originally spelled Norwaukee, is of uncertain origin. It may come from an Algonquian word, noyank, meaning point of land. It may be corrupted from Naramauke,[2] supposedly the name of a Native American chief.
The farming of oysters has long been important to Norwalk, which was once nicknamed Oyster Town. Each September, Norwalk holds its Oyster Festival.
